I know I stink cause I never post unless I need some board member input but you guys had some great calls when Rod and Fed brought up the Rascals the other day.

I'm 23 and I've just seen clips of the show over the years but whenever they talk about the old shows I just die laughing at the descriptions. I'm dying to grab some of these on DVD. When I went to check on Bestbuy.com there are just a shitload. Can anyone who knows about these DVD's let me know which 2 or 3 are the best ones to get?

Thanks,

SEEEYAAHHHH

Be nice papa Bear.

Your best bet is to check your local video store. I'm sure they will have them.
"We sound just like Cheap Trick only the guitars are louder," - Kurt Cobain "I prefer to listen to Cheap Trick." -Homer Simpson

they're all pretty good, i would have to say the one's where spanky is at his youngest seem to be the best. there is one when they get taken on a trainride after they exchange clothes with a group of kids and it's one of the best. the man who is responsible for watching the children is especially funny.

other good episodes:

when they go camping at some creek.

they form their own fire department and spanky has worms and won't take his medicine.

one of the boys wants to buy his mom a dress for her birthday and he and his friends make a cake and put a bunch of crazy items in it and charge the neighborhood kids some money to come to the cake party and get a chance at the wonderful prizes

i haven't seen them in quite a long time so i can't remember any names

Your friendly neighborhood Jafter is the local expert on Rascals - until he shows up, I'll try and add some stuff....

There were over 200 Little Rascals/Our Gang shorts that were produced in about a 20 year span. You can sort of divide them into three "eras." There was between 80-90 silent films produced by Hal Roach as well as with MGM (1922-1929), about 75 sound films produced by Roach & MGM (1929-1938) and then about 50 final sound films produced without Hal Roach just for MGM (1938-1943).

The quality of the silent ones are tough to get through - no one has done a really good restoration on them. You have to be a hard core fan of silent films, old films, or Little Rascals to get through them.

The MGM ones without Roach are when they were on their last leg, and they began recycling stories. Spanky, Porky, Darla, Alfalfa are in these but older, and unfunny. Froggy and Mikey (aka: Robert Blake) were in these as well, and were the best thing about them. TNT use to rerun these.

In the early 1990s Cabin Fever home video put out a 21 VHS set made up of the really good Roach/MGM shorts. The transfers are crisp and clean - they are hosted by film critic Leonard Maltin, who wrote the book on the Rascals. These were also shown on AMC movie channel as recently as 2003. Most (if not all) of the shorts that R&F were talking about were in this set.

Recently someone began selling well produced DVDs of many of the Cabin Fever tapes compressed down to a 6 DVD set that can be found on ebay. I don't know the story on them - if they are legit or not - but they sure look that way. They are very good quality. I only found them on ebay, though. Hallmark Home video also has begun putting many of these out as well.

What you see at Best Buy, or Costco, are usually compilations of the silent films and some of the early Hal Roach ones. Check out the years - anything before 1929 is going to be silent - anything in the 1930s are pretty much the good ones and the ones you want - and the 1940s are the ones they began to run out of steam.

Spanky began as a 4 year old in 1932 and worked until he was 14 year old ten years later. He was the star, even getting his own movie in 1936, and you can't go wrong if he is in it. Especially if Alfalfa is in them (he was there from 1935-1940). Before them, the stars were Wheezer, Stymie and Jackie Cooper.

The source of all hate

I don't know why I didn't check with Wikipedia first, but they have a pretty comprehensive history listing as well as a list of the episodes. They also include the story of the Cabin Fever VHS and DVDs

Leonard Maltin's book is still available and is pretty good, if I remember.

After looking into it closer, Hallmark bought the rights to the good shorts that Cabin Fever use to put out. Instead of putting out multi-volumes all at once, they are putting them out one volume at a time. They don't match up exactly with the Cabin Fever ones, but they are pretty close. So far there are only two sets out (pictured above in my other rambling post) with a third planned for November (under the title "Collector's Edition 3"). They seem like they are going to put them all out, just at their own pace, so if you were patient you could always just get the Hallmark ones, and just wait every 3 - 6 months for another volume. This is if you can't find the Cabin Fever ones, or are afraid they are bootlegs.
