View Full Version : How much is your pet worth?

A friend of mine recently spend $4,000 on an operation to keep his 11 year-old dog alive. I thought he was crazy at the time. I don't know if I could justify spending that much money on a dog that old. But if it was my dog, I probably would have done the exact same thing.

My question is, how much is too much to spend on a pet? $5,000? $10,000? $50,000? Where do you draw the line and put the animal to sleep?

As much money as I physically have. An loans if I had to take them out. I wouldn't extend the life of my pet if it meant more suffering for them, but if it would give them a few more good years, I definitely would.

My ex had a dog that would get out constantly. It got nailed by a truck about 5 months after he got it. His mom spent $5000 to make it a robotic legged dog. Well, the operation saved him, but the accident did something that made it so his penis wouldn't ever retract back into his body. Which meant it got chapped. They couldn't fix it and the dog eventually turned reall violent because of it and they had to put him down. That was $5000 down the toilet.

My cat Skittles went into kidney failure in January. She's a little younger than normal to go through that, so it was very surprising. She ended up staying at the vet's for a week, getting rehydrated and tested. The vet didn't expect her to make it through the day, let alone that week. He suggested other tests to give her, to determine what, if anything else, was wrong with her. He also said a kidney transplant would be around $10,000. Skittles is a tiny cat to begin with, and when she got sick she was down to 3 pounds. She was very weak, but she was still herself, which is why I held on and didn't put her to sleep, even though that's what the vet thought I should do. As weak as she was, she'd still get up in her cage when I went to see her, and wanted me to hold her. 9 months later, Skittles is doing fine. She's back up to her weight (6 pounds) and runs and plays with my other cat. My vet bill was about $1000, and I spend about $30 a month on her needles and lactated ringers. It's definitely worth it.

I have a cat named Tyler Durdan that I love more than anything in the world. But I STILL couldn't see myself spending more than 6 or 7 thousand to keep him alive.

My white boxer, Flaco is worth any amount of money I would have to throw at him to keep him going in a normal life. Supposedly these dogs are prone to cancers, but to me it would be worth it to go through the treatments or whatever if there was reasonable expectation for him to make a recovery.

I already know I'd be a heartless bastard. My parents' cat has diabetes and they have to give it a shot twice a day and spend hundreds on her medication each month. When they told me that I couldn't picture ever being willing to spend that much effort or cash on a pet, and I grew up with this damn thing. I'd try and find someone out there willing to take care of it in its condition first, but if nobody stepped up, I'd take her to the vet and put her out of her mercy.

Of course, I would never have a filthy pet in the first place, so that clouds my judgement right there.

But there has to be a limit. I certainly wouldn't go into debt or borrow money. If I had it, I would probably spend the money. But until I become a millionaire, the cat is getting one in the back of its cute little head if the bill comes in over a few thousand bucks.
My family dog was recenty found to have an iron deficiency and my parents had to take the dog to two different vets, where they recommended everything from a blood transfusion to putting her down. My parents didn't want to spend all the money they were talking about.

Fortunately, the dog has been bouncing back of late thanks to a change of diet.

never a simple answer... depends on financial situation, are you making a permanent fix and life expectancy is for a few more additional years.

about 2 years ago our male cat had a urinary blockage. he was 4 years old and it cost 700 altogether to clear it up. now he's on a new diet, Science Hill CD hard food and hasn't had a problem since. Guess you could have called this a 'permanent fix' due to the chances of clearing it up and keeping it under control...

it's a tougher decision to spend the money when you have kids and you're trying to save money for college and their own well being...

Is it better to give the animal some years of a 'good life' ( if you decide to not spend thousands of dollars to keep them alive ) than to not have adopted the animal in the first place and the possibility that may have been put to sleep at the ASPCA or other animal shelter? i'm sure different people would have different opinions on it...

I don't like looking like a monster all the time. I mean my family has spent a lot of money on pets sometimes. I understand how attached you get to them, and I love all my pets too. But I just wanted to say there has to be a cut-off point, like others are saying. If it's young and has a good chance to recover and lead a good life, then you'd spend more. I know there's no scale or chart you can check, and your emotions play a big part of it. I'd probably end up spending too much to keep my pets alive too in the end. I just hope I'd know when it was time to end it for them instead of prolonging their agony to keep them around for my sake.

I believe and have believed for years that people should be able to die with dignity, and at a time of their choosing. Not to say we should hand out suicide kits so depressed teens could off themselves, but the terminally ill and elderly could go on their own terms. And the family should have the choice of pulling the plug if all signs point to their loved one not coming back after all the avenues have been explored.
I've spent thousands on my cat Beezer, between him getting hit by a car, various bacterial illnesses and hospitalizations and whatnot, etc. - this was all years ago, and he's now 12 years old and cute & happy as can be. My mom's spent thousands on her persians because of various UTIs they've gotten but they're her little guys so it's worth it to her. How the hell do you put value on a life??

Teddi my St. Bernard/Lab mix was diagnosed with bone cancer in her
front shoulder this past March. Our options were: A.
amputate which would cost thousands, it would take her forever to heal
and walk again, and there would be a chance the cancer would show up
again; B. treat it with chemo/radiation and risk having the
cancer come back. Plus the treatments are way more expensive than
amputation. C. Give her pain managment to keep her
comfortable until the point that it was "time".

After
a long time thinking about it all, I chose C because other than myself
knowing she had cancer....she didnt act like she had cancer and didnt
know it either. She still ran around and acted normal. The
vet told me she had 3 to 6 months so I gave her all the love in the
world, kept her comfortable, treated her like gold until it was
time. August 26th, she had had enough and we took her to be put
asleep. She had a wonderful life, 11 years, which is a long time
for a large breed and I dont regret the decisions I made.
I'll have that comic book forum yet...

Back on topic...say your car is going to die on you...3 months left, tops, and then it's useless. Your employment depends on you having a car, and you have just enough money to get a new one that''s not a heap. It then turns out that your pet needs medical attention that's going to cost the same, and needs it ASAP. The pet is over a decade old...what ends up happening?

What ends up happening?

I have a spiffy new ride with a roomy trunk. Enough trunkroom to carry a body to be cremated..

I may have come off heartless in this thread, but I really am not. I have been around dogs all my life. I love them. They don't judge me, just unconditionally love me.

The story now is;

KC is over 10 years old. She sleeps 20 hours/day. Really not much of a life.
