Brown was removed from his post as leader of the federal government's response to the New Orleans flooding amid criticism that it was slow and poorly planned, but he was not fired.

Thats what Bush said when the camera was on.

But the hubub was that he wasn't sure about the info he was getting from Brown.

The
N.O. Mayor (Negrin) said that when he met Bush for the 1st time after
the storm hit, Bush offered to him to use Air Force one to get cleaned
up and something to eat (something he obviously hadn't done for a few
days after the storm hit) and said to him "When you get back, let me
know what you need, and whats going on down here. I'm not sure about
the information I'm getting"

And when I about heard that, I knew Brown was done.

Can you
name one person bush has fired? he refuses to acknowledge any failures
and doesn't hold anyone in his administration accountable for anything.
there is no way to save face when you fire your old pal who had ZERO
qualifications for the job

I don't think its the policy of the bush administration to publically fire anyone..forced resignations are frequently used in Washington to protect the integrity of the White House as well as the individual being forced to resign...if the person is a friend of Bush he can still retain his dignity and assume a job in the private sector without a "fired by the president" on his resume...this isn't Denny's people...you just don't get fired at this level....

understand resign means fired...you dont just quit a job like director of FEMA...

It made my heart sing.

there is no way to save face when you fire your old pal who had ZERO qualifications for the job

Then why did the Senate confirm him? Republican majority notwithstanding, why didn't some Senator stand up and decry his nomination they way they do judges and nominees like John Bolton or Linda Chavez and say this person isn't right for the job?

The answer is that Undersecretaries and Deputies typically get rubberstamped thorugh because they are not the top guy...or gal. Problem is, by reorg-ing DHS the way they did, critical positions are given this treatment when they need to have better qualified people.

i don't know why any of this surprises people. this has been going
on
in washington for over a century. the worst case of appointing a
nobody to a high position has to be the apointing of James Ziglar to
commisioner of INS (Before the DHS takeover). Ziglar was appointed in
mid 2001. do you know what his qualifications were? he was the sargent
at arms of the senate. Yes, he was the doorman of the congress. the guy
who introduces the president before the state of the union address.
that's it. that's all he did. most of the agency heads are people who
were "owed" something, either by this administration or from some past
association.

i find all of the outrage and disbelief a bit naive.

PS I'm mainly talking about the outrage in the press

Yesterday Brownie issued a statement, part of which said: “As I told the President, it is important that I leave now.”

Later, when Bush was in MS, he was asked about Brownie's resignation. He said he hadn't talked to Brownie and “maybe you know something I don’t know.”

That would be just about everything.

Oh, but later press secretary McClellan said Bush did know, just that he didn't know it was public.

You spin me right 'round baby, right 'round like a record baby...

I can't blame him too much... he is proud that he doesn't really read newspaper stories or watch any national news.
