Did anybody ever buy that stuff they used to sell in comic books? I could never convince my parents to let me send for any of it. Stuff like mini spy cameras, giant 8 foot balloons, x-ray specs, life size posters of Dracula and Frankenstein, U-Control Life Size Ghost??? I remember an ad for a six foot submarine that shot rockets for like 8 bucks. I was convinced it would really go in the water and drive it around. If I only had 8 bucks at the time .......

I never sent in for the stuff in the comic books, but I did send in for a knife and some dogtags from my Boys Life magazine.

I don't really remember my comic books having shit to buy. I think I'm too young by a couple years.

Moe's right - he's probably to young. The ads I'm talking about were mostly in the 70's. I actually found a picture of the sub I was talking about. How good could it have been for $6.98?

I bought some "joke gum" once. It was supposed to taste like hot peppers and I couldn't wait to trick my friends. But the sticks of gum were hard as a rock and weird looking, and the pack looked really fake too. I tried slipping them into Wrigly wrappers but the minute the gum was unwrapped it was obviously not right and no one would chew it. What a disappointment.

The best toy soldier set was the bigass D-Day one, with something like 500 soldiers, including American, British and Germans, sundries like sandbag emplacements, barbed wire and stuff. Cost about 5 bucks.

Other items from the back of comic books were Mexican jumping beans and invisible ink. You'd put the "ink" in a squirt gun and squirt someone's white clothes, and just as they were getting ready to chase you to kick your ass, the "ink" would disappear.

There were also things for detectives, like little mirrors to go inside the corners of your glasses wher the hinges are, so you have teensy rear view mirrors to tell if you're being followed.

My favorite was the hover-craft you could make out of your vacuum cleaner. I'm not sure if it was in a comic book or not. I recall seeing it in Boy's Life magazine from my cub scout days. Imagine your parents coming home and you have the vacuum in 1000 pieces on the floor.

Yea, but they'd shut their mouthes when you started totally hovering around the living room.
