The season is less than a month away, most of the free agents are signed, so I think it's time for an unoffical thread for all things hockey. Can't wait for this season.

And just because I love pissing off Devil's fans, looks like there's some bad news for your hero Scott Stevens: http://www.nhl.com/news/2005/09/234016.html

I'm ready for the season, as a matter of fact I'm going to the Devils Red & White scrimmage on the 16th. As far as Stevens, it wasn't a shock to me. I knew he wasn't comming back, and I'm cool with that. He's one of my all time favorite players but time moves fast and players age, it's time for somebody new to step up and fill the void.

First of all, if you ever so much as thought that Stevens was returning you're an absolute moron. And secondly, it'll be anywhere from 1-2 months into the season before Elias comes back.

The "future" Ranger goalie just retired due to nerve damage in a shoulder/arm.

And I've been very impressed with Laksonen (sp) for the Avs. I thought he'd be washed up, but he's showed some awesome hands this preseason thus far. Not the terrible pickup I thought a few months back. Hope he does it during the regular season though.

I saw a practice run of a shoot out during the Rangers-Islanders game the other night and I'm still not sold on it. Shoot outs sucked in MLS and I'm expecting that they won't be much better on the ice.

I don't like the fact that the goalie can only handle the puck in Gretzky's office. I can live with a tie and a defense oriented game. Roller Hockey International (NJ Rockin Rollers, Philadelphia Bulldogs, Montreal Road Runners, etc.) tried to sell an offense oriented game and it got real boring real quick. Then again, I'm a Devils fan and I'm used to watching low scoring, defensive style games.

People bitched about the wild card in baseball, now everyone loves it so who knows? I've got a bunch of Devils games lined up for October so I'll find out real quick whether I like the new rules or not.

ESPN has begun to post their team capsule previews...

Boy it looks like St. Louis is really going to stink this year...theyve made the playoffs for 25 consecutive years....

Just hope the Baby Caps can stay competitive for a little bit...maybe get some good FA's in the offseason...or they could probably get something good for Olie if they dealt him, and I think they should...they're rebuilding, and i think they need to turn it over to Maxime and let Olie take a shot at the Cup again with a contender (hello Vancouver...Olie lives in the Northwest)

The Devils salary cap casualty wound up being Jeff Friesen, who got dealt to the Caps for a draft pick. What it pretty much amounts to is that Friesen got dropped in favor of Mogilny. Doesn't matter. Zach Parise is just about ready for the big time anyway.

Rob Skrlac retired and Tommy Albelin (!) is on the 33 man roster.

Ground breaking for the new stadium in Newark is next week (Monday?).

Well here comes one fucked up season of hockey. I hate the trapezoid behind the net rule for the goalies, disdain taking the game out of the game with the shootout for fringe fans but love the elimination of the red-line / three-line pass along with the touch up offside rule. Games will be much quicker once teams adjust to the new rules and penalties subside. The game is crazy different, and I have HD and a big screen to see it all bitches!

As of this moment?

Try Alex Ovechkin....Kid is the REAL DEAL...just got through watching him dismantle the Blue Jackets....2 goals, and at least 3 huge checks...

I like the new NHL...they are really really really cracking down on the hooking and holding...even for stuff that looks minor, that's why there are so many penalties...the Flyers as of this moment are 1-9 on the PP tonight....

The game seemed like it had a lot more flow to it, was faster, and had a lot more scoring chances...Columbus scored tonight on a flip pass from their own zone that sprung a guy on breakaway...

Lets go Caps!

Powered by CGISpy.com .... The picture was shitty tonight, but both teams
(Devils and Islanders) were using hi-def cameras tonight. I don't think
those cameras work so good for standard definition. Not to mention that
FSNY had tech problems that pretty much ruined the whole 3rd period
with the picture and audio going in and out.

I'm still a bit stunned the Rangers beat the Flyers. So all those new penalties are supposed to make the game go faster?

I noticed the cameras were a bit lacking too. OLN is new to hockey, so they have a few kinks to work out. Like when the Ranger scored their 2nd gold - the point went to the Flyers on the screen for about 20 seconds before they changed it.

I can't believe Hbox and others are choosing 1st game end MVPs. I can see a three stars of the game rundown, but not fucking MVP votes. I know your just saying, but wtf!

As for the game flow, it was fast but too up and down over and over again. Also, the penalties got to a rediculous level, in essence slowing the game down once again. I do like the touch up offsides, the extra room in the offensive zones, but don't need 10 goals a night for hockey to be enjoyable to me. In fact, it actually gets borring at the 4-4 mark every fucking night. I'll give it time, but I'm not inclined to like this fringe fan based NHL. They basically shit on their true fan base. One question, does a shootout goal count in a players normal stats (both for the shooter and against the goalie's GAA)? If so, the stats for this year can't be held up to any other season in the NHL's past. We're truly talking about a new NHL in many ways. Also, the shootout means team records along with goalie records will be drastically efffected. Marty should bank even more wins per year with this new setup due to the fact that ties will all be taken out of the equation.

Since Mats Sundin destroyed his face there's been a lot of talk about visors (again)

Personally, I feel they shouldn't be legislated into the game...You could make the argument that helmets were legislated into the game, which is true, but i think visors and helmets are apples/oranges...I think youre dealing with basic safety vs. extra safety...if some guys don't want to go with the extra safety, that should be their choice...

I think the league should encourage visor use, but not legislate it into the game....

Just came back from the Devils game. Was looking for a shootout but
I'll take the win in OT anyday. Marty kept the Devils in the game- it
was like 3 shots on goal for the devils to 20 for the rangers prior to
the 3rd period. The Devs picked up their game in the 3rd. Their was a
brief delay in the second period due to the lighting which didn't go
back to full strength in the beginning of the third.

Yeah
I like the Senators. Even though they used to suck back in the day and
usually got the #1 draft pick, I always thought their jerseys were cool
and tried to follow the team through the various hockey magazines (the
team has a pretty interesting history). I got an authentic Yashin
jersey when he was on the Senators. When I play NHL on the PS2 I
usually pick Ottawa or NJ.

HBox

The NHL should try and enforce visor use. Even
forgetting any possible liability issues, they have a vested interest,
ESPECIALLY now, to keep their stars on the ice and not
missing over a month becuase they are refusing very basic safety
measures. Furthermore, teams have to be furious at players like Sundin
who will miss significant time because of preventable injuries. You can
talk about personal responsibility all you want, but more than just the
player suffers from these potentially serious injuries. The team is
weakened, management loses a draw and possibly ticket sales, fans lose
chances to see their favorite players and the league loses exposure
when the stars are taken out.

Some
injuries aren't preventable. When simple measures can be taken to
prevent some without hindering gameplay should be
mandatory.

Wow, watched last nights Avs game and the penalties are just plain rediculous. I think there was something like 16 in the game total, and of course this decided the game. The refs are truly deciding the game each and every night since most of the calls could be made almost all night long. Similar to the holding call in the NFL. So much for "flow" and or "speeding up the game". Also, no lead it truly safe. The Avs definately turned it off after they got a 3-0 lead and had trouble turning it back on as it usually is the case. But the Avs had some bad luck too. Hats off the the Preds though. They played hard from start to finish and Vokoun made some big saves in a 5-4 comeback win.

On another note, where does our bet stand mudo? Last night both our boys continued to put on shows as rooks with Ovechkin scoring his 4th in 6 games and Svatos netting his 5th goalin only 3 games. Svatos didn't play in the opener for the Avs, but has now scored 7 goals in his first 7 games in the NHL! I believe they stated he's the first EVER to do so. Oh and he had another goal waved off last night bc the net got pushed off as the puck went in. It should have counted bc it was the Preds player who caused it and the goal was going in no matter what. Tough call, but still the kid is showing amazing hands and isn't even close to the name right now of Crosby or even Ovechkin.

Ovechkin has one big advantage in the fact that Wahington seems to be in high scoring games every night. They will be more apt to let him freely attack all night, while the Avs definately make Marek Svatos play the full game. Not that Ovechkin doesn't, but the Caps will usually be down this year and offense will be needed sparing D when they have to.

They gotta keep calling these penalties until the players adjust to
cleaner play. It might suck now, but if the refs stick to it in the
long run it will improve the game.

I agree with Fallon on that one...

As far as Ovechkin/Svatos, I haven't checked out an Avs game yet, but I just committed to NHL Center Ice, so i'll be checking out an Avs game when I get the chance to see this guy....

I'm really just going on now what I've seen from Ovechkin...just the way in the first game on his very first shift he destroyed Radislav Suchy and broked the glass opened my eyes...he really set the tone on that first shift for the rest of that game and probably the season...it was an awesome moment...

What impresses me about Ovechkin(other than his physical play) is that he creates his own shots...he finds the areas on the ice where no one else is...the truly great players are always the ones who have that ability to get open on their own and make something happen...

Fallon and Mudo,

I would love to have your optimism on this one, but the same thing happens every fucking year in the NHL. But if this year truly is different, I'm not big on the refs calling it here but not there. This is already happening. Especially after one team is already down a man. If it's a penalty at even strength, its a penalty on the kill as well. Think NFL like I said too, bc the refs can basically call an obstruction of one sort or another at any time in the game. Hence they can control the game and I don't care how long the players have to get used to it, the refs can ruin the game regardless. Still, I haven't missed a single Avs game since Center Ice came out. With the one exception of the fucking Chicago blackout rule for the whole fucking country during the last season. How the fuck did they get that approved? It was only available for the local Avs affiliates. I know, I called and bitched to Direct TV.

In a way you're actually right. The jersey was supposed to be an official third jersey to be used before the Avs lauched the maroon ones they use today. It was never used, hence the official record won't show it. I already own the black version that was also supposed to be the official third jersey for them. This blue version I haven't been able to locate for sale anywhere. Just last Friday night Snoogans and I watched some hockey at my place (I've got the Center Ice setup) and sure enough there were a few of them on fans in the crowd at an Avs home game. So they are definately out there. I'm just having trouble finding them, especially when I'm looking for an XXL to actually use when I play pick up games with friends. I'd probably buy the XL and settle if I ever found one for sale. But the XXL would be sweet! Cool site though and thanks for giving it a shot. The site is technically wrong in that they listed the Avs official third jersey in the 2001-2002 season, when in fact it should be listed a year earlier.

I watched a lil of the Edmonton/Calgary game last night....which turned out not to be much of a game because Edmonton is being killed by injuries already...(Horcoff and Ryan Smyth)...Calgary just pushed them around the whole game and looked like a much better team...

And what's up with Bryan Sutter bringing Bryan Marchment out of retirement? I know he's one of his boys, but did they really need to bring back on the NHL's all-time great thugs when they already have Chris Simon? In his day the guy made Ulfie look like a clean player....

Speaking of Brett Hull and Phoenix, it is physically IMPOSSIBLE to watch any of their home games on Center Ice...It's so effing DARK in that building you can barely see the action....

The fans will be pissed but I doubt anything will happen on the ice. First off they just played in Vanc and nothing happened. Second, the Avs have around 10 new starters on the team. That's over 50% turnover for the team. Third, and I wish this didn't happen, but the Avs actually signed Brad May to a two year contract. He of course was a huge part in the debacle that went down and actually is a part of one of the lawsuits filed in the States by Steve Moore.

On a cool note, the Avs have stood behind Moore during his tough recovery and has stated that they will keep room for him in the org. He's still being paid to this day. I still think Bertuzzi should have to pay Moore a decent % of his salary for at least the next few years. And just in case his contracts have to be spread out evenly by years with no clauses in them to protect his money. He's a fucking asshole.

Yah, that would be interesting but I doubt the NHL would be happy with the Avs brass on that one. They want this thing to go away yesterday. And according to the Canucks and Avs, they feel the same. It was an ugly moment in the history of hockey, and I'd like to leave it as the Canucks fuck up, not the Avs. Causing another event like that won't help Moore return to his old form any quicker, if at all. The sad thing was that Crawford was a very respected, well liked past coach of the Avs. Lacroix sometimes caught shit for letting him go claiming he could be a real asshole at times. The Avs fans and press didn't quite get it, but when they won the cup under Hartley all was good in Denver again. This event made the Avs fans and press open their eyes to how much an asshole Crawford could be. For he, Bertuzzi and May have been linked to a meeting in which it is alledged they planned a beat down for Moore for having the audacity of hitting their captain Naslund with a clean hit. And it was a very clean hit in which Naslund tried to avoid it and hurt himself, albeit costing him only around 2 games bc they played it safe. In the infamous game, Moore stood his ground and fought a few times when they went after him, took a ton of dirty hits including a boarding, along with the whole Avs team. It got even worse when the score got out of control, around 7-1 or something, and May was the biggest asshole until the horrible event with Bertuzzi. May actually punched Aebischer in the face after a few shots on goal and even tried to rip his helmet off while in the crouch with a puck in his mid section. I still can't believe they signed this asshole. I had an unrealistic wish that Lacroix signed him to a two year contract in order to shut him out of hockey for the next two years. Sure, in this new NHL climate that would be stupid, but what a statement that would have been. I'd love it if he was stuck in the AHL or worse the next two years and possibly ending his career. May, Crawford, and Bertuzzi had a lot to do with all the bullshit that went down during that game.

a way you're actually right. The jersey was supposed to be an official
third jersey to be used before the Avs lauched the maroon ones they use
today. It was never used, hence the official record won't show it. I
already own the black version that was also supposed to be the official
third jersey for them. This blue version I haven't been able to locate
for sale anywhere. Just last Friday night Snoogans and I watched some
hockey at my place (I've got the Center Ice setup) and sure enough
there were a few of them on fans in the crowd at an Avs home game. So
they are definately out there. I'm just having trouble finding them,
especially when I'm looking for an XXL to actually use when I play pick
up games with friends. I'd probably buy the XL and settle if I ever
found one for sale. But the XXL would be sweet! Cool site though and
thanks for giving it a shot. The site is technically wrong in that they
listed the Avs official third jersey in the 2001-2002 season, when in
fact it should be listed a year earlier.

Hey Mudo, check out our rookie stat watch. That's about as close as it could be. Both are averaging just over a point a game. Nice starts. Take a look at the shot % stat, as Marek is pretty accurate. However, the ice time stat may hinder Boyes and Svatos over the course of the year. And somebody teach Crosby how to take a faceoff.

RK

Player

P

Tm

GP

G

A

P

+/-

PIM

OT

PP

SH

GW

<td class="S1130539

Some more interesting fact in the rookie rundown:

Crosby 1st Round / 1st Overall Pick 2005 08/87 DOB (fucking just turned 18)

Ovechkin 1st Round / 1st Overall Pick 2004 09/85 DOB (20)

Vorobiev 1st Round / 11th Overall Pick 2000 05/82 DOB (23)

Svatos 7th Round / 227th Overall Pick 2001 06/82 DOB (23)

Boyes 1st Round / 24th Overall Pick 2000 04/82 DOB (23)

It really shows how some players have the ability to play at this level at extremely young ages while others need a few years to develop. However, some organizations like the Avs, believe in development of younger players (especially defensively) by sending their young picks to juniors before the 10th game, or to the AHL if eligible. For example, Colorado just sent Wolski back to juniors just before his 10th game. I loved the kid offensively, but he was somewhat unpolished defensively. Most teams wouldn't be able to look past his offensive upside, myself included, and kept him up at the NHL level where time to develop isn't available. Hell, the kid has 6 points in nine games with only 9 minutes of ice time per game. Yet, he is still very young, still maturing/gaining weight (size is a crucial as these are still kids), and wouldn't have evolved at this level as much due to his limited ice time. Hence once again the Avs opted to spare the now in order to preserve a better future and possibly a better outcome for the player himself.

If an organization does this consistently, then they almost always have a kid coming out of juniors and or the minors that is ready to play at a much higher level then a year or two prior. Also, they believe that the kids come in with so much more experience, less banged up due to a less physical game and with leadership qualities developed as they fill those rolls much more readily in the lower organizations. Case in point, Forsberg, Hedjuk, Tanguay, Liles and now Svatos have all been proof to the system working. In the end, most players agree that it helped their career to mature and grow in the lower levels for a year or two. However, given the option each admitted that they would have opted to stay in the NHL. That's why coaching and management is there in the first place as you can't blame a kid for wanting to stay in the elite league from day one. Yet, there are only a select few who are good enough, mature enough (physically and mentally) to pull this off. Even if they are ready, could these select few players benefit more from a year or two to develop further before being thrust into the big time?

Get your balls out of your purse and step up to flavor! Not to mention all the fucking diving I've seen this year. Half the time a team comes back this year is due to the power play, and a lot of the calls came on blatant dives. This could kill the new NHL as well.

I thought they were going to emphasize diving. In
the first Devils game of the season I think Brylin got called for
diving even though he was hooked down and the player who hooked him got
a penalty as well. That was a very weird call.
Even though I was a proponent of the shootout, I don't like the fact that they're still giving a point for just making it to overtime. If that's the case, it's like there still are ties with the way the points work out. But I gues that was an attempt to appease the masses who didn't think the game's outcome should be decided in a shootout.

I couldn't disagree with you more Cripp. Sorry big guy. Every change this year was done for the fringe fan, and hockey didn't need to turn this into the MLB post-strike. It's as if they took out the run game and only left the passing game in football. In essence, we have the arena league equivalent to the NFL with this new NHL. The shootout is a fucking gimmick/game you play at the end of practice or open ice. The changes I do like are the touch up offsides, the smaller goalie pads, removal (not literally) of the red-line for two-line passes, and the shift in the ice zones to create more attack zone space taking from center ice. However, the fact that goalies can't touch the puck (the only player on the ice) outside of a little box behind the goal it stupid. The clutching and grabbing rules aren't new, they're just being enforced longer into the year so far. Give this time as I bet they so down soon, especially with all the diving and the lack of flow due to all the penalties. And the shootout fucking blows. Most of the people who like the shootout haven't a clue about hockey and most don't even watch it. So did the NHL actually listen to those who don't even really care. Sure, I'd like basketball better if they had a dunk out at the end of the game. Yet I still wouldn't watch that shit. Should basketball or any other sport go to these type finishes. Fuck no. Play the game. And ties are and should always be a part of the NHL game. Right now is the only year they haven't been. Unlike the baseball fans after the strike the hockey fan base came right back bc they knew that something had to be done with the game. I realize the NHL wants to take it to the next level, but Betman never played and hasn't a clue as to the history of the game outside of what he read on his way over from the NBA. I can't wait until he's gone.

Get your balls out of your purse and step up to flavor!
Just adding this from the St.Louis Blues website:

. LOUIS - St. Louis Blues Senior Vice President & General Manager Larry Pleau today announced that left wing Keith Tkachuk underwent an MRI exam yesterday that revealed he has three non-displaced cracked ribs. Tkachuk is likely to remain on the Blues’ injured reserve list for an estimated 3-5 weeks. The MRI followed two CT scans of Tkachuk’s rib cage that both came back negative for any further damage.

Tkachuk, who has appeared in two games this season, was injured during the second period of a home game versus Nashville on Oct. 15.

So basically it would be a total waste to make that trade

I think the Rangers are worried about grit since nobody stepped up when there player got injured and on many other muggings that thankfully haven't resulted in injuries. The Rangers are definately going to deal Poti, just not for Keith now.

quote:
Why
the fuck did they have to give them a point first!? It shows you that
this unbalanced schedule isn't very fair. As soon as the Wings start
playing out of division more, their standing will fall. I'm already
sick of the Avs playing the same teams, but when one division is down
and the other is up a disparity occurs as we're seeing now.

The
Red Wings are in the Central Division with three teams still with only
8 points or less. No to mention the one other team in that division
with a decent amount of points may be there bc they played so many
games against the other three teams (Nashville). This has allowed the
Wings to create a huge lead in the Western Conference Standings
already. They have 25 of a possible 28 points. They played only three
games against a Northwest opponent and lost two of them(their only two
losses). The Red Wings have played most of their games against a
horrible Blues team, a pitiful Columbus team, and a very young/bad
Chicago team. The Wings are nowhere near as tough as most people think
right now. Their points are ridiculous, but are an anomally of the new
system.

Meanwhile, the Northwest is beating the shit out of each

I went to the Caps/Thrashers game tonight and the Caps won! It was fantastic. I wish they could play every game like they played tonight. They looked great. Granted, it ended in a shootout so they didn't get a clean win but it was still a win. Ovechkin is so good--he won with his shootout shot. It sucks that it counts for nothing! I mean, for christ sakes, it was the game winner! I think the shootout shots should count as a goal on the player's record, but that's just me. I'm still glowing from the win and the beer.

Here's the rookie update:

So far the two 1st Overall Picks are holding off the 227th. Lacroix is one hell of a GM. About half of Svatos's goals have been game winners, 4 of the 10 that the Avs have currently! He's also pretty solid defensively, and the only top 4 rook not in the minus side of the plus minus. Ovechkin has been a shootout force though. Do they even list that stat anywhere? I can't find it at all. I think he has three shootout goals now? Svatos is 1/1 I believe, but the Avs have only been there twice this year.

RK

Player

Pos

Team

GP

G

A

P

+/-

PIM

PP

SH

GW

<a title="OVERTIME GOALS" hr

Marek just had another game winning goal last night. That makes 5 in the Avs 11 wins. That's an incredible number for a rookie who averages only about 12 minutes of ice time a night. If he ever gets paired with Tanguay, Sakic or Hedjuk he'd be a force.

Being stationed at Fort Campbell, the Nashville Predators offered free tickets to one of their games for military, so I decided it would be something to do, so I took the wife and kids and since then I have been to several games. I used to really like hockey when I was a kid, so it isn't like I am just getting into it. I used to be a complete anti-ranger fan(although my father is a fan) but lately this past couple of seasons, I have rooted for them(morely because I have felt bad for them).

As for goaltending, I have more faith in Lundqist(or whatever his name is) over Weekes. I do have to say that these two have done a better job than the last group of goaltending they have had over the years(Hebert,Dunham,Richter(yeah i said it),McLean,Healy, as well as some of the goalies they brought up from the Hartford Wolfpack minus Montoya(draft pick))

The Bruins got three former 1st round picks (Stuart 3rd overall/1998, Sturm 21st overall/1996 & Primeau 17th/1994) for a 1st overall pick in 1997 (Thorton). How this will play out will take time, but they dumped a huge contract (3 years/20 million, almost the max under the new cap laws) and picked up a pretty solid D (Stuart) and Sturm is pretty good as well (80pt/year potential). Wayne P. is probably the worst of the three statistically, but a grit center ice guy who assumes leadership roles. It didn't make much sense that the B's only gave Thorton a 3 year contract this summer and hence anyone could see that they weren't totally taken with him. With the way the B's were playing, I don't think this move was half bad. However, the B's never seem to be happy with anyone on their team making decent money so it's hard to judge this just yet. I think it might be one of those good for both teams type trade.

The depth they acquired in this trade should help. Sturm scored on his first Bruin shift and added an assist later. Also, Stuart had an assist and the three new B's combined for a +2 rating in a Bruin 3-0 shutout win. Thorton has his first Shark game tonight. Depth for impact player. It's not so clear cut who got the best of this deal on paper. I lean towards the B's, but it might be what both teams needed.

That was one hell of a boring game. There was around 15 penalties called before the midway point in the game. 90% of them were awful calls, and they seemed to miss true calls like the high stick that ripped open a Sens face. I guess the blood all over the ice wasn't a clue.

On top of this, the Avs brass are making some real stupid moves. They continue to put a rookie in net in 3 games over 4 nights (4 in 6 nights looking further out)?!! The kid first played in Boston on Wednesday and won. Next he played and won in a shootout vs. the Devils (Fri) at Marty! Even though these were his first two NHL games of his career, the Avs started him the very next night (Sat) in Pitt and he finally lost a one goal game. It's rare that a team starts the same goalie in back to back nights with this Olympic condensed schedule this year, yet the Avs did it with a rookie first time call up to boot. Also, the Avs are have three, count them, three goalies on their fucking roster right now!! Why the fuck would you do that if you're not going to use them when a situation calls for it so blatantly? Well even with the kid showing fatigue, the Avs decided to start him two nights later (Monday) against Marc's Sens. The highest scoring team in the league I might add (2nd is the Avs). So all in all when I came back from my own team's game and brought up the tivo recording of the game and saw the kid in again I knew he'd break down. It's tough enough to win the 3rd game in 4 nights with a super tired and traveled team, but when you opt to keep the tired goalie in you basically gave it away. You need to put a fresh goalie in there and hope he can steal a game in which you don't have the skating edge in.

All in all it was a terrible sports week for me. My Chargers played horrible and probably knocked themselves out of the playoff race (the dolphins made me cry too Hootie!). The Avs did give me one hell of a show against the Devs, but followed it up with two losses with very poor choices. And the team I play for suffered their first loss of the year in a very close battle. I guess breaking up Indy's perfect season will bring me some joy next week! Peyton is going to get his ass flattened at least a few times by Merriman, Foley, Phillips and Scott.
