He's a fantastic coach. Nobody can make young players work like Ted Nolan. I'm a huge Sabres fan and what happened to him in Buffalo was a complete disgrace, he made a lot of enemies in the brass at the time. But there were all sorts of rumors as to why he got actually got fired - like that he boned Hasek's wife. Can't complain too much though. Ruff's been outstanding.

Tonight's game (Game 4) is the best I've seen this year. Speed, hitting, phenomenal passing, and gorgeous goals.

What a shame the rest of the country either has no clue it's on or just doesn't care.

These games will do a little better cause they are on NBC. In general, the playoffs have been amazing, as they usually are in hockey. NOTHING BETTER then playoff hockey

Nolan is a great coach and that has never been the problem. He's a first class asshole who burnt every bridge possible on his way out of Buf, and it hurt him up until this point. If he can tone it down and learn from his mistakes you've got a great coach, if not, so old shit. Also, it's a different league of late and I believe coaching doesn't have quite the impact it did in the last era. It's still huge, but surely different.

Sorry about the loss Manny. I couldn't believe they didn't call the hot foot/knee buckler trip from behind on Brindy in front of the net with about 1:30 to go in the game. It was blatant, it's a bullshit move which can really injure a guy in hockey, and it had a huge impact on the game not even counting the power play that should have ended the game. Yet, the way the Oilers PP was going, it may be for the best. Still, as the oiler player got up from the bullshit back of the knee take down, the puck went right by where he would have been with an open net. I tivod the play over and over and it was a huge miss by the refs especially after that bullshit call on J. Smith (hook) around the 5 minute mark. Brindy went flying in to help out in front of his net and stuck his right leg out real wide and dragged it right into the back of the Oiler player's knee and took him out hard. Whenever this happens to me in a game it's an automatic fight granted it's not a real close game or I get injured on the play.

Sorry Mr. Harper.

What a finish to that game! Gotta love the oilers tenacity!

To quote the radio announcer for the Oilers:"Put Stanley back in the box and book your flight folks...we're going back to Edmonton"

What a great end to the game! I was hoping the Oilers would win and there'd be a
game 6. So exciting.
Who did Ward smack with his stick after the Hurricanes lost? I saw him leaving
the ice and swing his stick at an Oiler but couldn't read the number.

Few thoughts:

1) No one should talk about how bad the Southeast Division is/was any more (last two Cups....LETS GO CAPS)

2)I could not be MORE surly right now...they already act like they invented basketball down there, and now they're going to act like they invented hockey

And I can't really find anything to hold against Carolina, no flukey plays or anything...they pretty much earned it

3) I feel bad for the people in Hartford

4) Cam Ward's save late in the 3rd probably got him the Conn Smythe (the one on Torres I believe), but it probably should have gone IMO to Brind'Amour...he made every huge play for the Canes in the playoffs, and Ward had to be taken out and put back in like 3/4 times...remember, its for the WHOLE playoffs, not just the finals

I hated seeing Brind 'Amour's big ugly lips on the cup. I've hated him since he was
a Flyer!
Now the hockey drought begins.

What really gets me is that the Sabres were 20 minutes away from eliminating the Hurricanes, even with no starting defense to speak of left.

I'm over it. Although I'd still like to hear Spoon's perspective on the whole thing.

Offseason thread to come soon.

All I have to add right now is that I got in a major fight myself last night and have been icing my fucking hand all night. I think I broke my right ring finger on some mammoth guy's face. He lined me up and blindsided me with an elbow to the jaw. I didn't really think I'd get up and fucking destroy him after that cheap fucking hit, but I hit him so flush in the face so many times my fucking hand hurts and his face didn't look good. He got what he deserved for such a cheap, intent to injure bullshit hit that we both got tossed and the refs said they didn't blame me. Yet they both thought I was nuts since the guy was 6'4" 230 lbs at least. However, he went down hard and has a black eye and fucked up face to boot for his troubles. It's even hard to type right now. Safe to say he made me snap, which I haven't done in a long time. I have teeth marks on my knuckles and plenty of his blood on my jersey too.

As for the Stanley Cup, I thought it was a great year and I really enjoyed the playoffs even with my boys being bounced early. To be honest, I didn't think they'd even get to the second round to be honest. Both Carolina and Edmonton were fast hard working teams that both deserved to be in the finals. I'd love to know what would have happened if the Oilers didn't have to change up their game plan and play with a lesser goalie once Rolo went down. I truly think that Carolina got lucky with injuries against both Buf and Edmonton and wouldn't have won without it. I can't say this for sure, but I think both Edmonton and Buf surely weren't the same due to injuries and who knows if this would have happened. But hey, injuries are a key part of the game. Congrats to Carolina and fuck the South, 99% of the Hurricane players are from Canada and Europe. Carolina is just where they play.

If the Oilers won the cup who do you think would win the Conn Smythe? Im thinking Pronger would probably be the hands down favorite but Peca was solid, Pisani was fantastic and Roloson was credited with really getting them to the finals.

MHasegawa
06-20-2006, 12:43 PM
If Rolo stayed healthy and played through the finals, I would have given it to him. But if edmonton won last nights game, i would have given it to Pisani, he was clutch all playoffs.
The awards are out. Ruff won the Jack Adams! I'm a little surprised that he won out, but I guess they decided that what Ruff did with the Sabres was tougher than what Laviolette did with the 'Canes. Here are the rest of the awards:

Hart Trophy -- Joe Thornton, Sharks
Calder Trophy -- Alexander Ovechkin, Capitals
Norris Trophy -- Nicklas Lidstrom, Red Wings
Vezina Trophy -- Mikka Kiprusoff, Flames
Selke Trophy -- Rod Brind'Amour, Hurricanes
Lady Byng Trophy -- Pavel Datsyuk, Red Wings
Masterton Trophy -- Teemu Selanne, Ducks
Lester B. Pearson Award -- Jaromir Jagr, Rangers
King Clancy Trophy -- Olaf Kolzig, Capitals

Thoughts? Reactions? I guess all those predictions of Crosby being a shoe-in for the Calder were a tad premature.

I'm happy as hell Lidstrom won another Norris trophy. I've been a hockey fan for over 25 years and I've never seen a defenseman play such mistake free hockey. He never gets caught out of position and is as solid a two way player as I've ever seen.

Also good to see Datsyuk get some recognition. 87 points, a +26, and only 22 penalty minutes. I think he's a really underrated player and it's good to see him win the Byng.

Would have like to have seen Glen Hanlon given the Adams though...the Caps had Ovechkin and garbage, and to compete the way they did throughout the season night after night was inspiring and noteworthy

Caps - Nothing was expected of them. They didn't produce much.

Sabres, Rangers, Hurricanes (all of whose coaches were nominated) - Nothing was expected of them. All of them made the playoffs. The Hurricanes win the cup.

That's the big difference.

History
The Lester B. Pearson Award was introduced to the National Hockey League by the National Hockey League Players' Association in 1972. The award goes to the league's most valuable player as voted by the members of the NHLPA.

The award is named after Canada's Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson who served as leader of his nation between 1963 and 1968. Pearson was also the Nobel Peace Prize recipient in 1957. A passionate hockey fan, Pearson played hockey for the Oxford Canadians while attending university in London, England. He later lectured at the University of Toronto while coaching the varsity hockey team.

Technically, the Pearson Award is the league's "most outstanding player", as voted by fellow players.

The Hart is the MVP award voted by the writers.
