I went fishing last week for the first time in like 4 years for snappers. Im not sure if this is their official name or not, but its what everyone Ive ever heard call them. Some people refer to them as "baby blues" as well. They are fairly easy to catch with either a "popper" or a "snapper zapper" metal lure and they are pretty good eatin'. I used the popper and caught like 20 of them over a few hours. Anyone else like fishing? Since this is "snapper season", I wonder of a board event could be scheduled at some point? Its a nice day fishing and it isnt too hard at all. The weather was very nice this weekend!

This is what they look like:

This is what I used:

The other guy used this:

my daughters and I went night fishing for blues out of Belmar about 2 weeks ago, the Golden Eagle. my youngest daughter caught 7 nice sized blues, the oldest got 6, and i stopped fishing after getting 5. we kept around 7 and gave them away and started throwing the rest back...

talk about blood, all over the deck. them blues bleed alot and they put up a decent fight and when you get them on the deck they're flapping all over the place. i saw one jump out of a closed cooler.

I only fly fish, mostly for stripers. Right now it is albie season in Montauk but I haven't gotten any yet - they are crazy hard to get to hit a fly, but when they do it is awesome. Here is one from a couple of years ago:
I also go for trout; usually get out west to Montana or Colorado a couple of times a year. This year I got to go to New Zealand. Here is a 4.5 lb "steelhead" (technically just a rainbow as it doesn't go to the ocean; it goes to a lake, but same idea) that I caught a few weeks ago near Lake Taupo on NZ's north island:

And an 8 lb rainbow from the frying pan river in Colorado a few years ago:
and fyi snapper/baby blues are exactly that : baby blue fish, usually only up to half a pound or so...up to about 2 or so lbs they're called cocktail blues, and the really big guys that are maybe 10 lbs and over are called alligator blues... big pain in the ass when you're out fishing for stripers or expecially albies because you'll accidentally get one on the line and they will bite right through it - wire leader is imperative for them, but you can't really catch anytihng else with a wire leader; other fish see it and run. bluefish are aggressive and eat anything...
