This is very sad news. I grew up in Oxford, Mississippi (a wonderful place to go, by the way, for any reason) and had the chance as a kid to sit outside Taylor Grocery (in Taylor, Mississippi, 8miles south of Oxford, population 280) and have a long chat about nothing with Mr. Burnside. The former mayor of the town has many contacts in the film industry and was assisting in the shoot of a PBS Documentary of which Mr. Burnside was a subject. My job, as a 12 year old assistant, was to stand "in the middle of the road, you know, down yonder way" and stop any car that may drive by and interrupt the filming. He talked about the blues, about growing up many many years before me in the same North Mississippi hills that we were sitting in during that very moment. I will always remember him telling me, "now son, you can take this to heart. I don't drink no more.........." Then with a teasing grin you can only witness between an old man and a young impressionable pre-teen, he added "but I don't drink no less either." Admittedly, I do enjoy blues music but am not a huge follower of Mr. Burnside's music. What a treat though, to have spent the afternoon with a national treasure. Those old blues men are kind of like the old time barber. They are all dying off with no one to replace them. Sad indeed.

Man, too bad. But he was getting up there...still one of the best modern day blues musicians out there...and good call saying he was "adventurous." He put out an album with his nephew and Jon Spencer (who he also worked with on the great "Ass Pocket..." album posted above)...

...that kicks impossible amounts of ass. It's seriously one of the most badass albums I've ever heard. "Remixed" blues done funk and hip-hop style...there's nothing that sounds like it. And a lot of the tracks have been used on "The Sopranos," too...

Too drunk to dream... << Champagne for my real friends, and real pain for my sham friends. >> "You can tell some lies about the good times we've had, but I've kissed your mother twice...and now I'm working on your dad..."
