<h1>Scientific Savvy? In U.S., Not Much</h1>Dr. Miller's data reveal some yawning gaps in basic knowledge. American adults in general do not understand what molecules are (other than that they are really small). Fewer than a third can identify DNA as a key to heredity. Only about 10 percent know what radiation is. I don't believe these facts you have here. I never met a person who
didn't know about molecules or the earths rotation around the sun, and
I have met some very dumb people. Sounds like someone just wants us to
think we're all stupid.

can't "not believe" in a fact. facts are facts. the findings of a
research study may not be a fact. I think the biggest problem with our
society is that we don't know the difference between fact and opinion.
maybe that's why we seem so dumb.Hell, there's a bit on Sportscenter called "cold hard facts" and they have an expert in and he gives his opinion, which infuriates me because, again, opinions are not fact.

Well to get a picture of the state of science literacy, the percentage hangs around 45% across recent years for people agreeing with the following in Gallup polls: God created man pretty much in his present form at one time within the last 10,000 years.=Also, there is a video called 'A Private Universe' showing a school graduation ceremony; this I show every class, and the graduates and teachers are milling about after the graduation, and a camera crew asks the same question:Why is it hotter in the Summer then in the Winter?And the wrong, utterly wrong answers are given, again, and again. Some are asked why the moon has phases, and the answers range from obscuring clouds to differing reflections from light from the earth. Almost none of them are even close.The graduation ceremony is Harvard University; the students Harvard seniors, now grads, the teachers Harvard Profs. still in Gowns, the grads with diplomas in hand, all geting it spectacularly wrong.

I got 4/5, getting the first question wrong.  I will argure this question though, in white text in order to not give anything away The earth DOES have an elliptical orbit, and hence I choose answer C. Answer a is JUST as incorrect using the logic in their explanation.

OK some.But again, these are not easy Qs, they are unfamiliar territory, and some of the answers are counter-intuitive, and some of the Qs are derived from old science books that showed the incorrect diagrams, and still do. Meaning, some of these wrong answers, as the Project gets into, have been taught to us, actually drilled into our heads, and they are simply wrong.  True, sort of.
The deeper you go into any science, the more you realize just how much
we DONT understand. And so we go with theories, which at the end of the
day are fact-based opinions. And much of what is presented as
fact (especially in Politics) is actually full of opinion, especially when you dig into the
studies behind the so-called facts. But
I agree with the original point about people who dont believe in
Evolution and buy into the "Intelligent Design" stuff. There's no
evidence for it whatsoever. There's only the absence of proof, which of
course doesn't prove anything in and of itself.

I don't know how he conducted his research, but I do know that he did not ask everybody in the US. In order for it to be a fact, everyone would need to be asked. Maybe only 20% of people who responded to his questionaires were considered to be scientifically savvy. He could be asking these questions in a certain region where people are dumb. Maybe people who about this stuff didn't bother to answer the survey. It's impossible to make this a fact. Fuck you Dr. Miller!

I got 4 of 5 right, getting #2 wrong.  Yet I have a problem with the correct answer of that question.  Time to go white text for those who haven't taken the test yet.  Oh and my girlfriend got 3/5 right.  White Text:  I have to say that the question has two correct answers, as technically bc of the Earth's tilt, the rays of the sun are more direct and slightly closer.  Hence both the answer listed as correct and I believe it was C should be one in the same.  Perhaps I'm just off, but I hold to this until someone could extrapolate on it.  .......
