i used to pull pints at my father's place. I made good money; paid for
college. But we only had beer, so there was nothing to learn.
It's fun (if you work at the right place), you make tons of cash, and you definitely don't need to memorize 300 drinks.

don't waste your time or $$$. it's bullshit. you do not need a certificate/ to be certified to bartend. but... having a set of tits will propel you much farther/ quicker.

in college i started as a barback and did security. i worked with some cool bartenders and showed initiative and they showed me the ropes. gradually, i worked my way up, still doing other jobs though i had the head bartending shift on saturday nights.

ultimately, unless you find an in, it's increadibly difficult. and from what 'm told, bartending school will only get you placed in some shit as dive w/ lil advancement.

M1 has a good point. I started at the door, where I worked. That led
to barbacking, then on to tending. It's the only way to really learn.
Also... the most important thing (besides tits) is personality and
confidence. When I started a shift, the show started.

Pick
the place where you want to work, and be there at closing time way too
often. You'll end up working there whether planned on it or not.

haha furie is a pint puller.

and papa put it right: the best way to learn. bartending isn't all it's cracked up to be. you will work weekends if yo want to make money, and not get out until probably 6 in the morning, cleaning up. then have to wind down for an hour or so. good $$$ though.

i took a class a few years ago, and you're really paying for the job listings that each school provides ...

get your self any of the dozens of drink (or web sites) books out there, get a credit card-sized address book and write down the more common drinks under each letter ...

memorize and practice ...

all you really need to know is glass, ice, liquor, topper and garnish ... know the basic liquors: vodka, gin rum, tequilla, whiskey and scotch; get down all the basic juice drinks: cranberry, orange, grapefruit and pinapple; learn the different collins and sour mixed drinks; then the martinis and manhattans; finally, learn a few basic shots ...

if you've spent any time around drinkers or in a bar, you can get an idea of which drinks to know -- people everywhere basically drink the same shit ...

craigslist and the voice has daily listings for bartending gigs ... learn the basics, show a little self confidence and you'll have basically the same chance at a gig ...

another thing is to hit every catering hall in your area, halls have a very hight turn over rate and the money isn't that bad ... if you get a bite, spend $100 on tux pant/shirt

i have a word document (if you're interested) that has all the basics ...

I tried to get a gig for a loooooong time but in the NYC area, you gotta know someone to get in. I do it on the weekends and a few times during the week. Good money, and if you get a good bar, you'll mostly be pouring beer, opening bottles and making your basic mixed drinks. But if someone asks you for a mojito, just tell 'em you don't have any mint leaves nancy.
