It's sorta funny to read your post about your concern for the people in the path of this hurricane, then you look down at your sig.

according to the weather channel. katrina is a strong catagory 5. where
ever it hits will have extensive damage and loss of life. I've been
through enough hurricanes to know that one this size is bad news.

The tsunami hit so fast that it created more
casualties and it happened over a larger area, and affected some of the
poorest nations on earth who, to compound the matter, were highly
reliant on tourism to drive their economies. In this situation,
hopefully the advance warning will limit the casualties and the biggest
thing we'll have to worrsy about is physical damage.

But let's
just put it this way: If a REALLY rich guy (like 50 times richer than
you) lived down the block from you and his mansion burned down, you'd
obivously be sorry for him and try to help him out, but you wouldn't be
rushing out with your checkbook like you would if the poor family on
the block lost their home.

What I posted still does apply, with the tsunami
you are dealing with third world countries whose governments couldn't
afford to adequate fund relief efforts. Hopefully the Red Cross will
have no shortage of money to provide relief. Comparing this to the
tsunami is really comparing apples to oranges; two different types of
disasters under two very different circumstances.

I completely agree HBOX.

I kind of feel bad about the whole
tsunami thing now. It really meant absolutely nothing to me at the
time. Katrina means everything to me now. Guess it's like the old story
of a recession and a depression. If your neighbor loses his job it's a
recession. If you lose your job it's a depression.

Side note about relief aid.

I
was sent by my family to one of those relief stations after Ivan to get
some ice. Power was out for like a week. Ice was all I needed. We
stocked up on food and bottled water so we were set. I pull up and they
start handing me a rediculous amount of those MRE's (food the army
uses) and cases of bottled water. I tell the national guard guys that
it's OK I don't need it. They refused to let me go without giving it to
me. They open the hatch of my car and put it in. The whole time I'm
like seriously guys I'm good. They made me take it! What a waste.

Also
the whole time those guys and the Red Cross people looked and talked to
me like I was some poor little animal, telling me to keep my chin up
and things will be OK. I had zero problems. I just needed to get some
freaking ice. I know they were coming from a good place but it sucks
and I wouldn't recommend it. Funny thing is you have to go through like
three levels of people so by the last level I was giving them the "god
bless you angels" treatment while my wife gave me dirty looks. I
figured it made them feel good.

We
used all that water to play around with the MRE's. Fascinating stuff.
You just pour water in them and they burn like hell. The food was
absolute ass.

Point of all this. Wasted money. I bet it's a rule that they
have to give everybody everything. I should write them a letter
or something.

CNN has a camera mounted on a building somewhere in
NO, and it's been rocking around like a wind chime all night. I hope
the show the footage of it at the point when it inevitably flies off
wherever it's mounted.

Bama, there was similar shit that went down in NYC after 9/11. I worked with the Red Cross and the Salvation Army doing anything they needed me to do for the week after it all went down. I can't tell you how many people, with no training or skills that were needed, insisted on getting down to ground zero. I witnessed some horrible shit from people who weren't satisfied just helping at the Javits Center on 12th Ave where we were. There was always plenty of shit to be done helping those people who were working down there, as we worked as a sort of check point for supplies, food, water and countless other needs going on at the time. We organized a lot of what went down there, including people with the skills needed, who could help immediately after it happened, before the effort got truly organized. And a few of us had to routinely pull asshole hero wannabees off ambulances, trucks loaded with supplies and anything else that these people thought would get them down there. Plenty of people got arrested at this level, and it was distgusting bc they surely could of helped just where they were. In fact, they only trusted a select few of the vols to assist unloading the trucks anywhere near ground zero bc of all this shit and I really didn't want to get anywhere near it at that point. It's hard to forget what we saw and smelled, I could only imagine how tough it was on the people who did work close by.

segment they did on the effects of what's about to happen. Once the
storm surge overtakes the levees and floods the city, the sewage system
is going to back up into the city and turn it into a toxic lake casuing
ecological devastation.

It really bothers me that, now that Katrina is Cat4, the CNN people
seem to be disapointed. They try to portray it as "Cat4 is bad, so
things could be catastophic" but it sounds more like their actual
thoughts are "Damn... this may not end up being as good of a news story
as we hoped". This happens with every impending storm. I honestly
believe the media wants storms like this to be as bad as possible.

Stay tuned for video footage of Anderson Cooper getting knocked down by the wind...

Well, now that the bulk of the storm has come and gone, I guess we can officially declare this:
MOST OF THE AREA WILL BE UNINHABITABLE FOR WEEKS...PERHAPS LONGER. AT
LEAST ONE HALF OF WELL CONSTRUCTED HOMES WILL HAVE ROOF AND WALL
FAILURE. ALL GABLED ROOFS WILL FAIL...LEAVING THOSE HOMES SEVERELY
DAMAGED OR DESTROYED.

THE MAJORITY OF INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS WILL BECOME NON FUNCTIONAL.
PARTIAL TO COMPLETE WALL AND ROOF FAILURE IS EXPECTED. ALL WOOD
FRAMED LOW RISING APARTMENT BUILDINGS WILL BE DESTROYED. CONCRETE
BLOCK LOW RISE APARTMENTS WILL SUSTAIN MAJOR DAMAGE...INCLUDING SOME
WALL AND ROOF FAILURE.

HIGH RISE OFFICE AND APARTMENT BUILDINGS WILL SWAY DANGEROUSLY...A
FEW TO THE POINT OF TOTAL COLLAPSE. ALL WINDOWS WILL BLOW OUT.

AIRBORNE DEBRIS WILL BE WIDESPREAD...AND MAY INCLUDE HEAVY ITEMS SUCH
AS HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES AND EVEN LIGHT VEHICLES. SPORT UTILITY
VEHICLES AND LIGHT TRUCKS WILL BE MOVED. THE BLOWN DEBRIS WILL CREATE
ADDITIONAL DESTRUCTION. PERSONS...PETS...AND LIVESTOCK EXPOSED TO THE
WINDS WILL FACE CERTAIN DEATH IF STRUCK.

POWER OUTAGES WILL LAST FOR WEEKS...AS MOST POWER POLES WILL BE DOWN
AND TRANSFORMERS DESTROYED. WATER SHORTAGES WILL MAKE HUMAN SUFFERING
INCREDIBLE BY MODERN STANDARDS.

THE VAST MAJORITY OF NATIVE TREES WILL BE SNAPPED OR UPROOTED. ONLY
THE HEARTIEST WILL REMAIN STANDING...BUT BE TOTALLY DEFOLIATED. FEW
CROPS WILL REMAIN. LIVESTOCK LEFT EXPOSED TO THE WINDS WILL BE KILLED.

I was watching the news and saw how Gulfport MS got hit really bad as well.

Something like 30 people died in one apartment complex. I wanna find the story on that and see what happened.

Here's what a friend of mine who lives in BR but had gone further north for the storm emailed me about whats happening :

The flooding in the greater New Orleans area is incredible. The mayor of

Kenner said that 100% of the buildings in Kenner had at least some damage to

them and many were completely lost as the flooding was very bad there. The

only place in Kenner that did not get flooded is the airport, which remains

closed for the moment. The Southside Marina which is in Metairie on Lake

Ponchartrain caught on fire and looks to have burned completely. They say

that 20+ buildings in New Orleans collapsed due to the wind and water

damage. The French Quarter did not flood too badly and mostly has wind

damage. Unfortunately the looters are out there and many shop owners who

rode the storm out have armed themselves and are trying to protect what is

left from their businesses. Law enforcement made a statement that any

looters who were caught would be treated "harshly" and would be prosecuted

to the full extent of the law. Watch your head (Bang) as you get in the car

sir. Gotta love New Orleans P.D. dahlin'! Hope they get a bunch of them.

The governor said that they have rescued about 200 people from rooftops and

that rescuers would be back out at first light. Slidell is basically totaled

as well. The north shore including Mandeville and Covingtion suffered a

tremendous amount of damage also.

Most of Baton Rouge is without power, but everything from Plaquemine north

to I-10 and westward is fine. There is a great deal of tree damage and

several road signs were blown over here, but other than that everything is

OK.

Anyway, it looks like the cleanup gets in full swing tomorrow and it's back

to work for me.

The reason the looting is happening in this cenario and not during 9/11 and the Blackout could be due to the fact that there was no reduction in police presence. If anything it might have been increased.

Obviously it was difficult to get around the city after 9/11 but its been almost impossible for the police to be anywhere let alone everywhere in New Orleans.

Even the State Troopers that were called from other areas are working outer areas more so than the inner city.

I'll throw something else into the mix about the folks who didn't
leave. If you're fimiliar w/New Orleans, its a very racially segregated
city. And the Police have a reputation going back 100 years for being
among the most corrupt in the nation. So much so, the Feds have
threatened to take over the NOPD more than a few times in the past 20
years. And race relations between the largely white Cops and the Black
community are non existant. This is the deepest of the deep south, and
when I went down there for Mardi Gras I saw cops do and say shit to
Blacks that would get them fired in a New York minute here.

Long story short, if I was Black and lived down there, I
wouldn't believe anyone wearing any kind badge. Period. So I'm not
surprised some folks tuned out the various authorities who told them to
leave.

The looters, however, are just criminal assholes

Due to the fact that it is one of the few big cities in the deep south, with Atlanta being it's closest sourthen comparison, it has to be more diverse.

The city itself is 66% black whereas the other areas of the south that harbor more prejudice are predominanatly white.

As far as comments being made that are inappropriate I'm sure that happens in any police department regardless of its regional location.

Long story short, if I was Black and lived down there, I wouldn't believe anyone wearing any kind badge. Period. So I'm not surprised some folks tuned out the various authorities who told them to leave.

Only problem with that is cops were telling them to leave in the face of a storm they could have easily turned on the TV, radio or read a paper about to see it wasn't a lie. There's a difference between racist cops cornering a black man and a whole city leaving.

The city knew for years that there would be
anywhere from 100,000 to 200,000 people who, in the event of an
evacuation, would have no way to leave the city. They never made any

The brunt of Hurricane Andrew pretty much just went through the Southern end of Florida. While it was ungodly destructive, I don't believe it slammed into such a major urban center as New Orleans. Many of the homes destroyed then have never been rebuilt. On a side note, the Habitat for Humanity homes built in Florida - many of them did survivie, mostly do to the fact that they go overboard with their nails and building materials. Now, one Hurrican I remember pretty well was Hugo (1989?), which slammed into Charleston, South Carolina, then came all the way to Charlotte and was STILL a Hurricane. It didn't get downgraded to a tropical storm until it hit the Appalachian Mountains. Unbelievable - just huge, huge old trees lifted and tossed around. Old homes that go back 100 years or more just destroyed.

I think Andrew took out a good chunk of Miami (they keep putting out the 21 Billion $ mark for Andrew--although I seem to remember it took out a stealth bomber or two at Homestead airforce base, and those things are a couple of billion each...). But for some reason I remember Hugo in 89 as being a bigger deal. I just figured it was the first bad hurricane in my memory--I don't remember much before 83 or84.

Snoogans makes one hell of a point on the gas issue. These companies will absorb none of the losses in this tragedy. Fox News ripped on Chavez of Venezuela for saying he would give needy families and charity organizations gas at cost during this hell. They said it wasn't his idea, it was Jesse Jackson's. Even though Chavez is know for helping the poor and being their champion in his own country. Not to mention he has made similar offers and came through to poor countries in Central and South America. They hate this guy bc he calls out Bush's greed and challenges him in the realm of oil. I am aware that he is a true socialist, but I could give a shit in this case. Let the man help us out here and bury the idiotic talk of taking out a man who has done nothing at all close to what was done to the Iraqi people. In fact, he actually was elected (democracy spreading, remember) and is loved by his people, having never been linked to atrocities like in Iraq.

If Bush really cared, he would have ended his vacation before this went down, and surely after one of the US's major cities was wiped off the map. Instead he needed one more day of rest (almost 5 fucking weeks). This guy just responded slower to this tragedy then with 9/11. What a fucking clown! I wonder why he's at 36% approval, the lowest of all-time. He could tap our reserves, call in favors from the Saudi's he flew out on 9/11 (1 million barrels a day extra wouldn't be tough for them), call in favors from Kuwait, or simply install marshall standards (i forget the true term) for prices on gas keeping levels steady. I mean fuck, the oil companies are averaging hundred billion dollar gains every quarter of late, and still get billions in US government subsidies a year as well. It's about time they fucking give back. Not under Bush though. The industrial military complex will grow until he's gone. I wonder if Haliburton will get all the rebuilding contracts after this like in Iraq (no bid versions). Don't worry though, Bush is cutting the longest vacation by a US president ever by two days and will be back on Wednesday. Sorry about the rant, but what the fuck!?

Get your balls out of your purse and step up to flavor! It's supply and demand people. It's just how it
works and is going to work from now on. There is no fucking conspiracy,
oil companies are just selling a commodity that has suddenly become
more scarce and therefore more valuable. If they took a pledge of honor
and cut the price of oil, yes they'd still make a profit but there
would be shortages. The days of cheap and plentiful oil are gone folks.
Maybe if some of you (and I'm not pointing the finger at anyone in
particular, just the NOW!NOW!NOW! American public in general) showed
some concern for the last 10 years, we might be close to some new
energy source to supplement or replace oil but we're not and that's how
it is. And as it is, supply shocks like now are going to be painful,
and only become moreso as demand continues outstripping
supply.
The demand is up as you point out, but the supply is there. They just don't want to increase the production as they are making the biggest profits in the history of the fucking world. With China and many other 3rd world countries becoming much more industrialized the demand has gone through the roof. But if you think that all is just business in this industry you are naive. One of my best friends on my hockey team is a huge oil engineer for Chevron and he has told me stories you couldn't believe. Some about Russia, some about the middle east, other here at home. The industry is dirty as fuck, and he's seen it first hand. I have no doubt the industry will use and portray the ideals needed to get what it wants, yet that doesn't mean it is so. And with the current administration, you know more hands are in the pot so profits have to cover more palms.

Also, there are alternatives out there. Our gov needs to lead the way if we are ever to make the not so easy transition. By settting th EPA mileage standard level at 30 mpg, we will never get there. They raised it 2 miles per fucking gallon in this last energy bill! What a fucking joke! Not to mention we increased the subsidies were giving to oil companies bc they really need the fucking help. Let's not look at bio diesel, solar, hydrogen, corn and other prospects that have made some huge gains with little support. There is a simple reason this won't happen until the oil is all but dried up. We all know what that is.

But if you think that all is just business in this industry you are naive.

I
certainly don't. But the fact is that while there is plenty oil left in
the ground left to pump, the rate at which we can get it out isn't
accelerating much. There are fewer and fewer sites left where you can
produce huge amounts of oil. As the oil fields become older the oil
starts to become more difficult to get out and therefore the site
produces oil at a slower rate. There are still huge untapped sites out
there but they are in places difficult to get to and therefore the oil
produced will be more expensive (Which is why they haven't been tapped
already. Companies tapped easier to reach, easier to produce, more
profitable fields). Specifially, I believe there are some huge fields
in the ocean somewhere north of Russia in the arctic.

I don't
want to discount the role corruption is playing, but there are some
more important, permanent issues at play here too.

This may sound a little cruel but really its not. New Orleans, from a design perspective, is inherently flawed. It's essentially a bowl between two large bodies of water protected by two man-made water walls and pumping stations that work on electricity. Maybe its just me, but I consider that to be an extremely retarded place to put a city. The city planners knew flooding would be an issue. I mean cmon, they banned underground burials b/c they knew bodies would just be washed out...

How do you build a city where the only protection is something built by man ? I mean, its absurd! Nature will ALWAYS win in the end. It was only a matter of time before they got hit by a whopper. As far as I'm concerned it was a roll of the dice that came up craps and its the people who lost big time.

They had what, 40 years to come up with a better system since Hurricane (Andrew I believe?) and the best they could come up with were bigger levees and a pumping system that works on electricity?

I don't think the public was adequately prepared for this possibility and now its the people paying the price.

I've heard a lot from the christian right saying New Orleans is paying for years of debauchery and g-d is wiping the "dirty city" clean...maybe their right, I dunno...this is a biblical disaster in its scope.

Maybe when all is said and done people will reconsider moving back to New Orleans until the government can come up with a public works project that could handle future disasters like this.

I'm no god bother by any stretch of the imagination, but the gulf coast of Mississippi is probably the third most popular gambling locale of the country. Lot of nice footage of casino boats lifted hundreds of yards away from where they were resting, including the days-from-opening Hard Rock...

I think certain religous types have a problem with that kind of activity.

The Georgia gov. signed an executive order to punish gasoline sellers who gouge customers, amid reports that pump prices in some parts of Atlanta had climbed as high as $5 a gallon. There was concern that the city of Atlanta could actually run out of gasoline by the weekend. On the way back from work I saw two different places which had $2.99 for regular. That was on the high end. A lot of places were still in the $2.70-2.80. I felt lucky finding a BP station that still had their regular prices at $2.69. They were less than a mile down the road from one of the $2.99 stations. THIS TIME LAST YEAR, the national average was about $1.86. Seems almost quaint.

Betsy is tied with Agnes, which caused major flooding in the Northeast in 1972, and behind only Hugo in 1989 and Andrew in 1992 in cost.

Betsy was blamed for 75 deaths in the USA, which ranks it 18th among the deadliest U.S. storms from 1900 through at least September 2003. i was never so happy to pay $2.69 a gallon and wait 25 minutes to get gas this morning. i feel like i really screwed them over. and it was a Mobil. what is weird is the Delta station across the street was empty and selling gas at over $3 a gallon. my 40 mile commute to work is going to suck for a while. i'm sure the price won't stay at $2.69 long. but i may just fill it up again on my way home...probably still cost me $10-$12.

The fact that there is not some sort of regional combat/ security team that could have been deployed to the area within a day or so in a situation like this is just...fucking unbelievable. I get that you cant rescue everyone quickly because you cant travel freely and theres many thousands of them, but the fact that buses are available and turned away because they felt threatened since there was no police or anyone else to stop the mob from charging them is disgusting. Its not really that difficult to have a team with its own communications that could eliminate this shit.

Just knowing theres all these people down there that would be doing about 50 times more then they actually are makes me sick. Youve got cops and Guard troops down there apparently but they barley doing shit for the same reasons jets circled long Island on 9-11, nobody knowing what orders to give, and in this case nobody on the ground with communication. Im hearing here that theres people asking the police what to do, where to go etc and the cops just say they dont know and basically are leaving people to die on the interstate, which btw can be reached from outside the area but theres still tons of people just sitting there for days.
