In an interview with Opie & Anthony, Matt Hardy was taken to task over the possibility that the entire situation with Edge, straight down to the betrayal, was a work. Denying such a theory, Hardy offered, "It's as real as a wrestling angle can get." He then claimed that Summerslam will not feature the use of wrestling moves - it will simply be Hardy "beating the crap" out of Edge. Yet, no matter how many times Hardy threatened to take Edge out at Summerslam, he could do nothing to convince Opie of the angle's legitimacy. Opie explained that he didn't want to see any of those "fake cops" drag Hardy away, nor did he want to see big-boobed and muscular EMTs carrying Hardy away on a gurney. And, the interviewers weren't the only ones critical of Hardy. A fan called into the show and stated that the angle with Matt Hardy coming out of Vince McMahon's limo completely ruined the storyline. Hardy insisted that the match is still important and will not be at the bottom of the card.

Regarding this Matt Hardy/Edge/Lita situation, I naively started out believing in its legitimacy (before Matt Hardy appeared back on WWE TV), but now the whole thing is coming off as a pure work. I think that Matt, being a true wrestling fan himself, knows about the power of the Internet and the relatively large numbers of "smarks" who check the Internet regularly for wrestling news and rumors.  I feel that he was trying to think of ways to revive his sagging career and pitched the idea to Vince as a way to create fan interest.   Vince has long been annoyed by the vocal minority of Internet fans mocking and insulting his every move, so I think this whole angle is a combination of "If you can't beat them, join them" and "I will pull the wool over the eyes of the fans who think they're smart to the business."  Plus, he figured that he could possibly create interest in 3 characters fans have recently cared nothing about and ride the Internet wave if it is, in fact, there. I think that the more hard-core and Internet-savvy fans want so desperately to believe either that something is real and can be truly believed in or that they have finally won out and that Vince is actually running with a real-life situation that was "discovered" on the Internet.  I believe that those of us who become annoyed with the fact that the business gives EVERYTHING away since declaring itself a work will more easily be duped into hoping that there is at least one more real-life situation to be seen on TV and PPV's. I highly doubt that Matt Hardy would post Internet rants about a highly painful real-life situation for all to see if it did not have to do with "doing business," esp. considering how Vince does not often enjoy real-life dirt laundry being aired that is not already in the context of an approved storyline, esp. one that involved possible libel.  Also, how exactly did Matt Hardy find out about this?  Wouldn't have Edge and Lita gone out of their way to avoid bringing the spotlight on themselves, at least to avoid heat from other workers and the office and to avoid creating a negative locker room situation that would piss Vince off? In addition, would Matt really agree to "work" again with Edge and Lita in an "angle" that exploited his real-life painful breakup with Lita?  Would he really be that desperate that he would forego his dignity and be like, "OK, I'll do this angle with both of you, even though it revolves around an utterly painful and humiliating real-life situation."  Alternatively, since the WWE has basically publicly admitted that everything they do is a work, do they really expect people to believe that this ONE ANGLE is "real" but everything else is still a "just entertainment?"  Why would we suddenly suspend all our disbelief of cameras being backstage and in locker rooms, conveniently being in place for matt to attack edge, for this one angle, while everything else is still pre-staged?   And would they really allow these two to go after each other, even in a worked setting, if the animosity between them is real?  Isn't that just a real injury and subsequent lawsuit waiting to happen?  And why would you agree to a "worked" match against someone you were legitimately really pissed at? I agree that the

I don't think it's fake. If it was, the entire angle with Kane would
have been scrapped, that caused nothing but confusion and proved they
didn't intend on bringing Matt back when they started that feud. All of
the summerslam promos don't even mention Kane.. like Lita has been with
Edge ever since Matt got injured. Also don't forget that Kane was the
one who "injured" Matt, and was the reason he was gone for all this
time. Now all of a sudden Matt returns and doesn't want revenge on the
person who "caused" everything? Remember Kane was the one who "married"
Lita, and "impregnated" her, not Edge, who screwed Kane. If it was a
work, Matt would have turned heel and sided with Edge against Kane.
That would have made more sense storyline-wise, but they need to go
with the more controversial one. 
The entire storyline is sloppy. Obviously all parties involved
came to some kind of agreement, and they're on good terms, because
Vince would not allow two wrestlers to actually go at it on a PPV, like
Matt is claiming will happen.

I find it funny how some people still believe this isnt a work or a
"complete" work. Come on. Thing is though, theyre gonna wind up doing
shit like this more and more now and its gonna get old. The intrigue
involved with this whole thing wont be there. Obviously there was a lot
of careful planning going all the way back to when Matt was recovering
from his injury. Im sure theyre gonna try to half ass it from here and
make them more cutesy. They might do something like this to
bring Lesnar back. Not like he comes back to fight for Sable or
something but all the internet reports say Lesnar didnt sign with the
WWE, meanwhile hes appearing on shows as that guy that shouldnt be
there...

 Yea, I think you misunderstood me, or I wasn't just clear enough. I
meant it did not start out as a storyline, it was not planned, and Edge
and Lita did in fact have the affair. Matt was fired cause of a knee
jerk reaction, later on they reconcile and Matt is back, and THEN they
turn it into a storyline.

Bringing back this threas since I don't see it addressed on this board.   Anyone going to call out the fact that Hardy is full of fucking shit?  That was ALL a work, PERIOD!  The match at summerslam wasn't half as hard as the worst ECW match, and they WERE fake.  Hardy sold his values up the river for a good payday, and his job back.  he is an ass, and will pay when O&A figure out that he used them to give this thing a real sounding angle.

Sometimes you just have to......ahh I forgot.

I think everyone is giving it the same response most of wrestling's storylines get these days...disgust, followed by embarrassment for having believed for a few minutes, followed by indifference & months of barely paying attention until the next shameful storyline comes along.  And I don't think anyone in the O&A camp cares enough to make a wrestler "pay."

Well, PAY may be a strong word, but Opie was NOT buying it too much.  So I have a feeling that if/when Hardy comes back on the show, he will get hit with this.That snarling flicking the shoulders thing is annoying.I have no doubt Egde and Lita DID have that affair, but exploiting it, just terriable.  Have some respect for yourself Matt.

I'm disappointed about how this angle turned out.  At first i thought it was brilliant.  I actually believed the shit about matt getting fired for writing aobut the affair in his blog.  it seemed like something Vince would do.  They had so much heat and they've squandered it.
