I’m as guilty as anybody here for posting and chortling over other people’s posts that highlight the stupidity/venality/hypocrisy, etc. of people and the consequential bad results that follow because, well, because they’re usually funny. But sometimes you come across a story that reminds you that not everyone on the planet sucks. I thought this might be a good place for a thread to chronicle these all too rare occasions; let’s start with the story of Victoria Ruvolo.
Short version: Last winter, a group of teens on Long Island boosted somebody’s credit card and thought it would be fun to go around buying useless crap with it, including a frozen turkey. While joyriding around, one of the morons decides to toss the turkey out of the car. In a confluence of stupidity, physics and horrible luck, the turkey winds up smashing through the windshield of Victoria Ruvolo, almost killing her and smashing her face beyond recognition. The cops catch the kids and the dick who threw the turkey out the window, Ryan Cushing, faces charges that could net him 25 years in jail.
Fast forward to yesterday. Cushing is in court to cop a plea to a Martha Stewart-like sentence that will give him six months in the local jail (not state prison) and five years probation. More evidence of bleeding heart judges and a broken justice system? No. The victim, who has had plenty of surgery and God knows how much pain and suffering, pushes the DA for a light sentence and basically gives this mook his life back. I hope he does something positive with it.
Victoria Ruvolo is good people. (Actually, she is close to being a saint.)

The links are worth reading:

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/longisland/ny-liturk0816,0,6362948.story?coll=ny-homepage-bigpix2005

http://www.newsday.com/news/printedition/longisland/ny-liturk164386051aug16,0,4856742.story?coll=ny-linews-print

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/17/opinion/17wed4.html

Yes, Victoria is certainly a much bigger person than anyone I know (I've never met her). Like you, I really really hope this guy recognizes this as his second chance at life and makes something of it.

"Court testimony by crime victims is often pitched as a sort of retributive therapy, a way for angry, injured people to force criminals to confront their shame. But while some convicts grovel, others smirk. Many are impassive. It's hard to imagine that those hurt by crime reliably find healing in the courtroom. Given the opportunity for retribution, Ms. Ruvolo gave and got something better: the dissipation of anger and the restoration of hope, in a gesture as cleansing as the tears washing down her damaged face, and the face of the foolish, miserable boy whose life she single-handedly restored."

Wow. She really does have a huge heart and it makes you think what you could forgive.

If that turkey hit me I'd want that kid to spend as much as the 25 years as possible behind bars while I'd send him pictures of my reconstructive surgery every year.

We should punish people like the olden days with scarlet letters and albatross' and such. In this case, I would think forcing the kid to wear a frozen-turkey hat for the rest of his life would be sufficient.
Big Ass Mafia Click this link to hear my show on 90.5 The Night FM; Friday and Saturday Night: Midnight to 5 AM you bastards!

The problem with being good people is that kindness is often confused with weakness.

I am such a newbie at this shit. Without receiving wrath may I ask if Crazy Jren posts anyplace in these parts. I have a friend who knows all about the "inside-out deer" at Fort D.. I can't fall asleep anymore without Ron and Fez.
