What qualifies as old school, and how far back do you have to go? And who's over 35 here?

I'm 27. And Old Skool just really means something that's a few years old and everyone might have forgotten about. I've never seen any restrictions on what can and can't be old skool.

To me, once something is a decade behind us (and is no longer "active," however you wanna take that), it's old skool.

I'm only 19 so I don't know much about living in "old school" times. I consider the 80's old school and anything before that. I only lived for 4 years in the 80's yet I am known as the big 80's guy...

I'm 2 months shy of 39 and to me, old school is anything that makes the 20 somethings that I work with, cock their heads in confussion.

I'm 36, and i think Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Louie Armstrong
are old school. Basically, anything recorded in mono qualifies.

Like Mojo said, "old school" pertains to be anything RETIRED over 5 - 10 years ago. Different things have different life expectancies so there isn't a set number of years. Things like fashion and slang come and go more frequently than things like movies and music, which have a greater staying power. The key is that something has to go out of circulation for a while before it can be considered "old school."

The question I have is, when does something become too old to be considered "old school"?

There has to be a certain limit. For instance, I wouldn't consider silent films from the turn of the century as "old school" movies. Once something reaches a certain point, it can't qualify as "old school". Then it becomes something like, "classic" or "ancient". Which raises another question:

What's the difference between "old school" and "classic"? Is there a difference?

Because of my dyslexia I always get "Old School" mistaken for "Old Skool," which of course I always confuse with the 1989 kid-punk band "Old Skull," which hit "the scene" at the same alternative press music fair as Gwar. They even played on the same bill back then. These kids, today, are older than a lot of people on this board.

Watch the movie 'Dazed and Confused' and the graduating class of 1976 ripping on the incoming freshman. Our class was the incoming freshman class, and oh yeah, the seniors beat the shit out of the frosh. 18 was legal so big guys like me weren't looked at twice at the liquor stores, hell they knew our names, and cops would often bust a party filled with allsorts of illegal substances with nothing more then a 'you crazy kids have ten minutes to clear our or else...'

I'd say that's old school. Something or some time so utterly different as to be unrecognizable from today. How many years? Beats me. But that world doesn't exist anymore

If VH1 does an "I Love the...." show about it, then it's old school.

Um, for me though I feel like old school applies to every person so my old school as a twenty year old is obviously not as long ago as a forty year old's.
The Dude abides ...And I killed Laura Palmer

Old School is anything from 1972 until September 12, 1980.

Anything before Jan 1, 1972 is considered "back in the day".

The 80's was big mistake in terms of anything being looked back upon as "cool" or even retro (except for Die Hard in 1988, a brief flash of brilliance).

The 90's are really just a few years ago, and should be looked upon as that for a few more years. They will then be labled as the good times until 2035, in which they will take over the 1889-1919 monkier, the turn of the century.

As for the present, 2000-2005, I think the whirly years is appropiate.
