OK, I openly admit I don't know how to categorize this stuff. But I've been hearing more of some dance stations in the area, and a few recent songs have reminded me of this kind of stuff. It's like early Electronia or just Dance or New Wave? I don't know what the fuck it really is, but one song that made me look for it online was "What's on your Mind? (Pure Energy)" by Information Society. I don't know why, but hearing that song just made me think of how good it really is, and I don't remember ever really hearing shit like that too much. But I like it.

So I ask you all. What kind of stuff is this, and what other stuff from that genre should I check out?

Yes, I love that genre of music (Placebo, New Order, Pet Shop Boys). I've been calling it Gay Brit-Pop or maybe New Wave... Good stuff man.

Information Society aren't British, they're actually from Minneapolis.
Kind of a strange act for that time (late 80s early 90s) and place considering
some of the other bands around there then were Soul Asylum and the
Replacements.

There
are a lot of synthpop bands out there, most of which I wouldn't suggest
to you personally. Maybe check out The Shamen, Camouflage, or
even Howard Jones. For some more recent and slightly harder edged stuff, look for Orgy, God Lives Underwater, and FischerSpooner.

Kudos to you for broadening your musical horizons, Moe. Maybe the Orgy of Sound will play some InSoc this Sunday night!

Go back to the first electronic band that influenced so many others. Feel free to call it crap, some is to these ears, but their influence on so many artists can not be denied.

Kraftwerk is the band and Kratwerk dot com has a bunch of music samples; with some cool visuals. Weird to navigate, just click away on what you can find; some sites make it a challenge to find the stuff, it would seem.

Einsturzende Neubauten

=

EN I would categorize not as electronic/dance; I think the derivation of the 'Industrial' genre of music was exactly these guys and people like Reznor and Jourgensen who had no trouble recording/sampling 'found' sounds, literally some big 'Klang!' of machinery, and there's your rhythm pulse, or whatever. EN is way on the edge of what many would call 'listenable', but good call anyway on recognizing a group that also is/was very different.

Dance I know zilch about, but for electronic music, if you want to go back to the beginning, when people started taking Bob Moog's creations and using them as instruments instead of sound effects [and lets not dismiss those early 'sound effects' that Theremin on the Beach Boys 'Good Vibrations' is fricking genius, and Wayyyyyy ahead of its time, certainly for that genre.].

So if you havent, check out Walter [who became] Wendy Carlos, thats her dirge at the beginning of 'The Shining' but she was known a lot more for 'Switched on Bach' and other early albums that used the Moog Modular in very new ways. Her music is all over 'A Clockwork Orange'; the classical pieces with synth replacing all the orchestral stuff.

Kraftwerk's site doesnt do justice to it's stuff, and it's early, so it sounds 'dry' and plain compared to todays digital emulations of all the old analog synths, but stuff like Autobahn, and Trans-Europe Express are pretty amazing.

Also Tangerine Dream, Van Der Graf Generator, Larry Fast/Synergy and [get ready for it] Emerson, Lake and Palmer. My God there is a lot of pretensious shit in the ELP catalog but some stuff blows me away.

Sadly the 80s hit with horrific sounding synths and since they were now in every studio, every studio thought ever song needed a layer of that high-tingly, sterile 80's sounding synth that, ack, choke, gasp, thump... just horrific.

Art of Noise just kicked ass, not the hits, exactly the opposite, the dub stuff.

ramble ramble ramble
