I am a big fan of Danny Elfman but I would have to say Hans Zimmer is a better composer and he deserves a lot more credit than he gets.

I agree that there are quite a few composers that outrank Danny Elfman but, ya gotta admit, the guy has a musical identity.

When you hear The Simpsons, PeeWee, Tales From The Crypt, Batman or any of the other stuff it's just so undeniably "Elf-ish".

John Williams owns that big thematic brass fanfare but, Elfman really owns an entire macabre mood.

They're all good. I really shouldn't be comparing anyone to anyone. They all have their strengths. (insert-special-olympics-joke here)

You are definitely right. You know when you are
listening to Elfman. Maybe more than any other composer. And I don't
think he gets enough credit for the great job he's doing with
Spiderman. It's much better than his Batman work, IMO.
Was that you Bobo? I was at that show, too! I remember Bartek had a furry tie on and I got them all to sign my ticket stub. What a great show.

Yeah, I dig Danny Elfman, especially when he plays the xylophone.

People severly underestimate the importance of a good musical score and most of the movies made today do a terrible job of composing or choosing music that accompanies the movie. I think that they rely too heavily on popular music and it often distracts people and makes certain parts of the movie seem like a music video. Mr. & Mrs. Smith really stands out in my mind as a recent example of this. The music was so overwhelming and stupid that it overshadowed the action and completely distracted me from the movie. In my opinion, music should be something, primarily instrumental, that accompanies the movie in a almost subliminal way. Hans Zimmer, John Williams, and Danny Elfman and true masters of this.

Whats most incredible about Elfman is that he isnt classically trained. After leaving Oingo Boingo he basically taught himself all that he knows about arranging and orchestration. Pretty incredible. The Simpsons theme is one of the most recognized themes out there. Genius.

My 1st ex's step father (yeah, sounds kinda far removed, but we're close) used to jam with Elfman when he lived in L.A. back in the 1970's. He said he was pretty cool. I love Elfman's soundtracks and what little I've heard of Oingo Boingo.
