If you've read his book The Cosmos is there any reason to watch the television version (if I can find it on DVD or VHS somewhere) or will I not get anything new out of it?

The VHS and DVD versions of Cosmos are different. The DVD set is updated; Sagan taped some update segments on what's happened since the episodes first aired. Ann Druyan, who helped on the book and series, and eventually married the guy [wife #3, Sagan was good at science but bad at marriage], she intros the series and gives updates. The DVD also updated much of the graphics and photos to show Hubble type images instead of what was available when the series filmed.

What will you get out of it? Well, the history of science and astronomy with a good dose of politics, mostly along the lines of 'will we destroy ourselves with this technology', if that's your bag...
