Can anyone recommend an inexpensive device that will strip the macrovision protection placed on commercial VHS tapes and DVDs to facilitate making backup copies? (yes, it is legal) I have only a couple of things I want to backup, so I'd rather not make a large investment in order to do so.

What do you want to back them up onto? A hard drive? Another VHS or DVD?

Dont know about that, but my approach was to use two VCR's and have
the 2nd one copy off the TV output, as opposed to going directly tape
to tape.

So it's VCR to TV input/DVD to TV output

I haven't done it in so long I dont know if it still works, but it's worth a shot.

DVD decrypter is awesome, I have heard people use it to bypass the regional coding on DVD, wink, nod.

The cheapest way to back up a VHS tape is to buy
another VCR and just connect one VCR directly to the other. If you want
to get the VHS on your computer, you're going to have to buy something
rather expensive. I'd recommend either an ATI TV Tuner or a Hauppage PVR-150.
These are cards you install in your computer that will allow your
computer to read either a coaxial cable, composite cable or an S-Video
cable and record the videos into MPEG2 files. The Hauppauge one has an
MPEG encoder on card so it will not slow your computer down one iota.
There are USB models from Hauppage and ATI if you don't want to open up
your computer. I'd only recommend those brands. They both come with
software to record. I have the Hauppage PVR-150 and it works great.
Flawless video quality. It will cost you a little bit, but you can
convert VHS tapes into DVDs. The Hauppauge comes with DVD creating
software. I don't know about the ATI one.
Years ago, my dad got a device from some mail order place, that allows him to copy encrypted tapes. Their illegal now, so the place doesn't sell them anymore. I'm hoping my dad leaves it to me in his will.
