Uhh, wonderful. So I go to the dentist for my 5:30 appointment. Fine. Takes an x-ray of the area that's been giving me a problem, numbs me up and he starts to drill.

Bad news. Need a root canal. So before I even get a chance to rinse, he's jamming little files up into my root canals, cleaning the nerves out. This guy works FAST! He's injecting me with antibacterial stuff in my root and everything.

But here's the kicker. I thought it was a one visit thing the way he was working. Before I even knew what had happened, he's got a temporary filling in there, telling me about my "next" visit. Damn it! Seems I've got to go back to have the ship spackled shut and them filled in. Now I don't blame this guy for anything, I'm just a little more than upset that he didn't warn me ahead of time. Now I'll be rolling with this temporary filling until August 1st, and have to be VERY careful about not chewing on that side.

I'm almost completely un-numb and I have little to no pain to speak of. Took some Advil and have my Seagrams handy, just in case. ANyone got any advice when dealing with a root canal, or any very painful stories?

I've had a root canal before...it's not as bad as most people make it out to be...once your numb its not so bad...and then once the main part of the root is gone it doesnt hurt at all becuz the nerve is gone too, the last visit i had the entisit did it all without novacaine....and the dentist had perscribed me pain killers it wasnt bad at all...3 visits and it was all done.

Nothing's ever as bad as people say. But it was 3 visits? I was hoping to get it done it 2, if possible. He did warn me that it might be 2 more visits.

See, it's not the pain that is annoying for me, it's the long time I'm gonna have to go without chewing on that side of my mouth. I'm afraid I'll forget and chomp down on that side.

He showed me how big an area he removed, so I see his point. He was actually very cool. He explained to me some of what he was doing, and when he saw I was interested, he let me watch some of the stuff he was doing with a mirror. I've hardly ever felt pain as he worked too. Great dentist.

If anyone in the Northern Morris County area of NJ needs a good dentist, PM me and I'll give you the number. He's a great dentist.

My dentist had a little camera so I got to watch my root canal on tv, that rocked. I seem to recall drinking a lot of carnation instant breakfast for a couple of weeks afterwards, and eating apple sauce with cottage cheese (yum!)

i'm surprised he didn't request putting in a post and crown. as we get older they indicate the tooth grows weaker and due to the root canal it's would be easier to damage the tooth. only problem is that procedure is pricey.

i had a dentist in jackson who didn't tell me that he planned to put a post and crown after a root canal, i heard it from the receptionist and it ticked me off. when i went back i told him to just fill it. turns out when i went to the my dentist in Colonia, he found some infection/abcess at the base of the tooth that the previous dentist worked on....

He knows that I don't have dental insurance and went the cheapest way for me, without making me lose the tooth. He told me right away what he needed to do, that it wouldn't be that cheap but he didn't want me to lose my tooth. He's a pretty cool dentist actually.

I had 2 root canals within 7 days of eachother about 1 month ago. The biggest pain was the $$$$. MANY offices/insurance companies consider dental crowns (which you will most likely need) to be cosmetic and they are not covered by insurance. This will set you back about $1,000 per tooth. After they put the temp filling in there, during your next visit, they will re-drill the tooth, take the temp crap out and make molds of your tooth. You will have to go back in 2-4 weeks to pick up your permanant crown and have that cemented into place. Another word of warning...if you go for your crowns you better hope your gums on that tooth are not high. The gums on my back right molar (where i got one of my root canals) was high on the tooth and that required additional treatment/surgery. See, they can't put a crown on a tooth if the gum is in the way. Unfortunately I had this problem and just YESTERDAY I had this surgery done. Took about 45 min. The specialist had to cut my gum (next to the root canal tooth) with a knife, PEEL BACK THE GUM/SKIN, and stitch it in place in line with the rest of my gumline. Not fun times..Now I'm all set and ready for my permanant crowns after this surgery heals itself up. Should be ready within a few weeks. Anyway...these are just some of the things to expect or be aware of.

Broke my two front teeth when I was a kid, had root canal on both of them, one at 8-years old, the other at 9. Dentist waited till I was 14 before he did the work on the permanent crowns & posts. Wasn't a good job though and they continuously loosened and I had to constantly go in and get them refitted. Finally when I was 20, some fluid got trapped and awoke one morning with a serious infection, Called my new, much better dentist at the time, and rushed into his office on a Sunday morning. He ended up pulling both front teeth and there was just a tremendous flow of pus and other crap started pouring out of my mouth. Got to look at what was left of the teeth he pulled, after I recovered a bit. They had basically just rotted away and wouldn't have lasted much longer. Now just have a nice 6-tooth bridge where my upper front teeth used to be. Two teeth on each side ground down to posts to support the bridge.

I had a root canal last year. It was actually pretty painless....Until about 4 days later. I drove up to Boston for a little weekend getaway with my Girlfriend and the weekend just sucked because I was in so much pain. It really only lasted a day or two but it was enough to ruin my weekend...

I've had pain after the fact with fillings. It seems like everyone is very different in this area of dentistry. I am ready for it, if it comes. I won't like it, but I'll deal. I'll just be happy to chew on that side of my mouth again. Maybe some pork roll, or a fine cheese. ::cheap plug for 2 great, recent threads::

I've had 3 root canals and never had any problems with chewing regular food on the temporary filling. I had one temporary filling in for a month because I kept putting off going back to the dentist and didn't have a problem. I've also had fillings put in instead of caps and again no problems. Maybe I'm just lucky. The biggest problem was having to take time off from work as opposed to the treatments themselves. Anyway, good luck.

I had a root canal done about 15 years ago and after about 5, the filling just kind of evaporated. One day, and I will always remember this, I was eating Entemann's Mini Heath Bar Cookies and the tooth (a canine) just shattered! I looked like Cletus the Slackjawed Yokel.

I had a root canal done once, and a few days later it started to kill
me, so I went back. The Dr said she must have missed some of the
root and said she was going to try to get the rest. She said it
would be quick and I could opt out of the anethestic, so I did.
It was the most crazy thing, because a tooth ache is usually such a
dull ache that when she stuck the file in, for one split second she hit
the exact center of the dull pain, which was unbelievable pain, and a
split second later it was all gone. It was really crazy.

Moe, I just got a root canal last week. The actual procedure was fine, I was really scared but I didn't feel anything.

BUT, something really crazy happened. During the prodcedure, I felt this weird shooting pain in my cheek. I made a face and he asked if my jaw was sore, I said yes cuz that's what I thought it was. A few minutes later I feel it again but this time I literally feel my cheek inflate. He stops what he's doing and says. Well, your cheek just got filled with air, this has only happened twice in 17 years. (That makes me feel even worse!)

Basically, while the canal was still exposed before the refill it, the air tube they had in my mouth actually went up through my canal and into my sinuses/cheek tissue and inflated. It really hurt and it looked like I had a baseball in my cheek for 4 days. It was horiible, I could feel the air pockets in my cheek. Ugh.

Just felt like sharing, doubt I will ever agree to one again.

That's one I never heard of before. Not that I'm a root canal expert now, but I've heard people talk about them. I mean I would usually have to pull due to not having dental insurance but it's the 1st molar behind that canine tooth, and it's abscence would be noticed. I'm thinking that regular check ups will offset the price of just one root canal. I say that now, but I'll be back in there with a tooth ache in a few years. Stupid.

Well I got Stage 2 out of the way today. Dude sealed up my root canals. That was about it. He made sure he got the root deep enough with some x rays and some poking, and filled me up.
