Today at work someone showed me this amazing new thing from Google called Google Earth, it's a small program you can use to check out places around the globe in near three dimensional form using satelite imagery. The cool part is when you enter in one place and then another it flies out of the one location and over to the new one. This is not your ordinary satelite image thing either. I have yet to see anything as advanced as this thing is. On top of that it also lets you make driving directions from one location to another. Plus it's free.

Check it out

If you're having problems downloading it there you can also get it off download.com, I also checked it to make sure there's no spyware.

yes this thing is a lot of fun!

But it loses focus at around a few hundred feet. In those movies when the CIA are tracking someone, they ask the nerd techy to "can you focus in on that?" and it gets really clear. I guess they dont want us seeing actual people. Speaking of people..how did they get these images wihtout any people? I tried a few stadiums and i never see people in them.

Also when you "tilt" in manhattan, everthing is level..there is no 3d difference between building heights. its all flat.

I will say this about the zoom functions. Check out the Navy SHARP pod i worked on the flight test for this thing on the F/A-18 E/F SuperHornets. In the IR mode we could see the heat trails of a jet that had just taken off and could differentiate the targets we had set up (Tanks, half traks, missile launchers) and this was from about 30,000 feet up and 20 miles away at a calibrated airpseed of 250KCAS. And the zoom functions were amazing

I have a decent video card, so I've been playing around with the graphics settings to make it as clear as possible. I have a question though. I see OpenGL is the default setting, but I always thought DirectX was supposed to be better. After researching it on the web, no one actually seems to come out and say which is the better mode.

Any suggestions on which I should use to get the best graphics out of this thing?

By the way, I am loving this program so far. I really wish it would be clearer closer up, but I guess I can understand it from a privacy point of view.

I forgot how cool google earth is for nerds. I just wasted about an hour screwing around on it. I dont know if they've always had the flight simulator which is hard to do using a touchpad mouse. They also have a feature where you can look at all current seismic activity. God damn I suck at life sometimes.
