Yeah, I should be clear that I agree with you, and I really don't see why anything "real" would be a negative when marketing to kids, I get why they don't want to present attitude era stuff and say they're marketing to children but one of the first things that ever made me bother my parents into ordering a pay per view as a kid was Jake Roberts versus Rick Rude which was a reasonably racy angle for the time, at least definitely not TV-PG considering the fact that Rude had Jake's wife's face painted onto his crotch, something he did without WWF's consent and pissed off Vince pretty good, good thing they didn't fire him then or we would have never gotten that string of epic, well worked Rude vs. Ultimate Warrior matches.

Here's my thoughts on Danielson's firing:

It's a work. They have a storyline staring them right in the face with this and it makes perfect sense:

Who were the only two people out there not attacked when the NXT brawl broke out? Serena and Michael Cole (who high tailed it out of there quickly).

Who has major heat with Danielson? Michael Cole

He can use the choking out of the ring announcer as proof that Danielson is too dangerous. I mean, if he'll try and choke out an innocent announcer, what would Danielson do to a commentator that has torn him down and that he absolutely despises?

Someone who has a long history with the company (Cole) is going to have their grievances taken seriously especially when someone who has been with the company for less than a year (Danielson) is the target.

Cole is afraid for his life. Get Danielson fired, and he's safe. Simple yet effective story.

Something tells me Danielson will be buying front row tickets for the next few Raws and NXT's.
