Apparently they still sell Rap Snacks in the inner city. In the hood where they sell the twosies of Newport's.

Besides that, I still drink Tab which I thought was off the market. I love that.

Now
if anyone knows this one, I will flip. There used to be this Peanut
Butter snack bar, I think it was called Peanut Butter Crunch or
something like that. It was the mid to late 80's and what it was was
peanut butter (the same texture as in Peanut Butter Cups) in a log
about 3/4 inch thick and 5 inches long, coated with chocolate and those
crunchies like they have in Soft Serve Ice Cream Cones. Now if anyone
has heard of that, let me know.

Oooh. Good question. I guess as far as snacks go I'll go with the ol
southern staple of an RC Cola and a moonpie (vanilla or banana),
substitute a Dr. Pepper or Coke for the RC. Anything else would just be
stuff my grandma makes. Deviled eggs, pork chops, homemade biscuits and
gravy. Or biscuits with her homemade preserves.

Other retro food would be stuff my girlfriend's yia yia makes. Ol fashion Greek food. Mousaka, baklava, pretty much anything Greek.

My grandmother used to make fried chicken with corn flakes as the breading. It got hit or miss as she got older. The other thing she made were these awesome oatmeal cookies that were more of a cross between oatmeal and sugar cookies and there was a hint of nutmeg I think. No one else in the family was ever able to make them the same way - I think she purposely gave them the wrong recipe. The used to freeze really well so she would make huge batches that would last for months.

The must haves at any family/holiday dinner are noodle pudding and the green been caserole w/mushroom soup and the French's onions.

When I was a kid, they were a very special treat to me. We didn't have a mall or a candy store here, so I only got them when we went to Tyson's Corner Mall, or visited family in Norfolk.

these were one of my childhood favs too. But I was able to get them too much that now I never desire them. I will buy a box/bag next time I see them. Maybe they will spark something after all these years!

Anyone remember jelly (Welch's maybe?) that came in glass jars with cartoons on the side? It was designed so when the jar was empty you could use it as a drinking glass. The jelly is the same but I remember the glasses.

Also, how about the little, cardboard cups of Good Humor ice cream that came with a little wooden paddle-spoon in a wax paper sleeve? You can still get the ice cream but it's not the same without the wooden spoon.

Butoni's toaster pizzas??? They were crispy, bread-like disks that you cooked in the toaster like a Pop-Tart. Inside they had some sort of orange goo that was supposed to resemble pizza sauce and cheese.

I also remember frozen meals in plastic bags that you'd drop into a pot of boiling water to heat. I especially remember the Salisbury Steak. That was a quick lunch or dinner before microwave ovens became commonplace.

There were also TV dinners in foil trays that you heated in the oven. One of the compartment in the tray had chocolate pudding for dessert which you ate hot. It always had a crispy ring of pudding crust around the edge. It sounds disgusting but it was the best part of the meal.

Ever look at one of your Mom's old cookbooks? A real mind fuck, how much food has changed since the 50's/60's/70's. One thing that jumps out at you is they used enough grease, lard, butter and shortening to give an Ox a heart attack. but somehow, most of them lived to be 80. Go figure.

Roy Rogers fast food is totally still around the Maryland/West Virginia area.
We used to have a similar chain called "Rax" with hot/cold color changing kid's cups. They stayed in the cabinet for years.

Is turkish taffy still around?
I member back in the day you could buy this bigass slab that was, like, a foot long and 3 inches wide or something.

Down South occasionally one can find a sandwich called a "Monte Cristo."
It's basically a ham and chhese sandwich that is dipped in tempura batter and deep-fried.

Then there were those giant lolly-pops.....

I just remembered another drink we used to have in the late 60s. I can't recall the name, but you bought a cup with lid, and then packets of powdered drink mix.
You'd put a certain amount of water or milk in the cup and pour in the powdered mix, put the lid on the cup and shake like hell until you got this thick drink delight.
There were just a handful of flavors, chocolate, strawberry and banana, as I recall. Maybe vanilla.
We got to where often we'd just have the powdered mix straight from the packet. I recall getting a lot of it in the mouth and the outside would sort of congeal while the inside was still powder until you chewed on it and if you swallowed before getting it all wet the mass of powder would bust up and stick in the back of your throat and it would be quite uncomfortable until you worked enough spit back there to soften it up so it would go on down.

Like with Shake-A-Puddin, it seemed there was some special cachet to having something you'd shake up in order to get it into edible form.

I open all of them from the pack and use one cracker to scrape the filling off the other cracker. I then eat the naked cracker. I repeat this until I have two crackers with ALL the filling from the other ones. I put those two together and have one REALLY cream cheese and chives filled cracker sandwich.
