View Full Version : Huge Day for Supreme Court Monday

Two
major cases to be settled on Monday: One about the legality of
displaying the Ten Commandment on public property, and one about the
liability of peer to peer software makers. Also, at least one
retirement is probable(Rehnquist), maybe more.

I fear disaster: a ruling allowing the
display of the Ten Commandments, a ruling finding peer to peer software
makers liable for illegal file sharing, and a summer that will make
even the latest partisan insanity look cordial, ending in one or two
religious zealots appointed to the Supreme Court.
you think a simple display of the ten commndments is disastrous? that's a bit much, no?

What's the use of "In God we Trust"? An abomination...no no, grievous. that sounds better.

While making the courts more secular is almost always a good thing, a few words carved on a monument aren't dangerous or disastrous.

Yah, the first issue made it to the supreme court why? Most aren't even illegal any way. I have my own religion and I want to put up my 37.2 commandment in the courts.

I say they combine the two and only allow you to display the 10 Commandments on peer to peer software.

I expected the filesharing one, but the decision on the ten commandments makes no sense. Its such a weak view. take a stand goddam it.

Maybe the view should be whether it's artistic or religious in intent. ie: A statue of the ten commandments would be out, but a recreation of a famous statue like Michelangelo's David or a statue of Vishnu would be in. i'd hate to see all that beautiful art work be removed just because its on government property.

The meaning is that as a courthouse it has to have the highest level of un biasness. And for any kind of document proclaiming one god over another could give the view of impropriety to any defendant who is of a different religion/atheist. Not that i agree but i can see where the stance comes from

Its my understanding that today's ruling doesn't cover (obviously)
companies outside the US and bit torrent files. Was listening to
someone much smarter than me on NPR explain it all.

yeah i'm pretty damn liberal and I have no problem with the Ten Commandments. I mean, if you just think of your own opinions on the issue, your own feelings, it seems like such a nonesense issue. I believe that they are a historical document if only because they were abided by as if they were natural law for 100's of years, so they should probably even be up in courthouses if there's some sort of cooky display o' law (which if i understand it correctly thats what there was in the Kentucky courthouses). Sure there are uber-Christians out there that want them in public for their own reasons (and even then i can't really grasp why one would care) but that doesn't affect me. I can't worry about how things affect me on a completely passive level.

I mean school prayer kind of goes on a slipperier (yep) slope but even that seems like an argument between uber-Christians who want to keep the Christian God on top of the totem pole and a coalition of self righteous atheists and crazy anti-uber-Christian-liberals (when you decide to dwell on such a meaningless cause you deserve such a long lable) who want to just deny liberties to the first group. And yes it is a more complex issue than the first, but for the most part no one's kids are being kicked in the teeth for not being Christian with school prayer any more than they would have been anyway.

The problem with displaying the ten commandments as the rule of law is very simple. We do not live in a monotheistic country. If we display one religions' doctrine of law, we have to display them all...

As for public grounds, I could care less, as long as all the religions of this country (the sane ones) are represented equally.
