View Full Version : Remember Family Vacations?

Every summer our family would drive from Maryland to Indiana for vacation when I was growing up. Both sets of grandparents lived in Indiana, as well as cousins so it was fun. The crappy part was the long drive (12 hours with all the rest stops). We'd all get up at like 4 am to get a big head start before the traffic started, but we'd poop around and never end up leaving before 8 am at the earliest. Before the trip, my dad would take me to this local magazine shop where I could pick out a stack of comic books to take with me. I remember wanting to read them so bad but having to wait so I'd have something to do in the car. One part of the drive we took the Pennsylvania turnpike, and had to go through a long tunnel. My brother and I would always pretend it was the mammoth car from speed racer surrounding us. That was cool. And nothing could beat mom's cooler packed with sandwiches.
Ah, the memories.
Anyone else take any family vacations when you were little?

My dad was always really into history, so come summer my parents would pack the 4 of us into the back of the old country squire station wagon and we'd be off to Mystic, Gettysburg or some other historical destination. I miss those long car rides with my dad's 8 track blasting Neil Sedaka or Freddie Fender, looking for license plates from other states and antagonizing the crap out each other until my father would threaten to pull over. My kids have game boys and walkmans and are safely strapped into my minivan for trips, but now I wonder if their trips are half as fun as the old days I spent bouncing around unsecured in the back of my mom's station wagon with nothing but my imagenation and three youger siblings for entertainment.

We used to go up to Lake George with my granparents and uncles (my uncles were only a few years older than I was) for vacation. We'd go to all of the amusement parks; take a ride on the Minnie Ha Ha, and then wander around the village at night. One fond memory was when we were walking back to the hotel after dinner one night, and my father decided it would be really funny to just throw my 5 year old ass into the deep part of the pool. I knew how to swim, but he's still an asshole.

I remember throwing up chocolate pop tarts into a white plastic garbage bag in the backseat of the family station wagon at about the half way point between NY and FL.

As far as destinations go my family vacations sucked.

My parents would take us to Mystic Connecticut for 4 days or so and we'd go to the aquarium and the submarine museum, which was fun the first 3 times but after that it would get old, really old.

Then there were the trips in the fall up to Vermont to see the leaves change color and we'd eat maple syrup all three meals. why mom and dad, why?

Yeah, we did the Florida thing each year. 25 hours with your ass glued to a car seat and fighting with my siblings. Good times.

Nobody
does it much anymore, because in the 70's (Before deregulation) It cost
$300-$700 per plane ticket to Fla. Now (30 years of inflation later)
you get one $99. So you'd have to be NUTS to drive. PLus you'll spend
$100 just in gas and tolls, and it takes 12 times longer than a 2 hour
flight.

And dont even get me started about the risks of driving vs risks of flying. Not even close.

My family was from Norfolk, VA. We'd go down every year and rent a beach cottage on the Chesapeake Bay. There was also the trip to Disney World in 1973 (The Pirates of The Carribian thing hadn't even been built yet). Damn I miss the beach...

Speaking of crap, I forgot to mention that my grandparents lived in GARY Indiana. Talk about gone to crap! It wasn't that bad back in the early 70s but today it looks like a warzone.

> Florida - Ft Lauderdale several times. One time with my grandparents and one brother. Cigar and cigarette smoke and big band music all the way down. The ac was blasting and they had the plastic covered seats so not only were your eyes burning from the cigar smoke but you were freezing too. I remember how thrilling it was when i was a kid to visit the South Of The Border but as an adult i really don't care for it. Had some really good times though at The Beach Club which is where we stayed.

> went to Rose Haven in the Poconos.

> visit relatives in Parkersburg West Virgina. Aunt Dot and Uncle Scutty. Aunt Dot's mom had a big farm and i remember laughing when i first saw a cow taking a pee and a poop. We picked peas out of the pod on the porch and they had a pond where Uncle Scutty took us fishing

> went to Niagra Falls, stayed one night and came home. on the way home we stopped at the Howe Caverns. I remember being very disappointed being they wouldn't let us go further into the cave

Though most people only think about the "official caverns" in the Shenandoah Valley, there are many smaller ones on private land. As a kid my friends and I would explore a bunch of them. One of them (Panther Cave) was small, but it had graffitti from Cival War soldiers. You could explore these caves as far as you wanted... as long as the owners didn't catch you!

We used travel alot as a family, but my favorite trips were always camping. Hiking and camping, near Lake Louise and Banff, Alberta. Hiking up glaciers. After the long drive to base camp, a cooler full of Mum's sandwiches tasted AMAZING...whatever they were- Cucumber sandwiches wrapped in a wax paper tasted like filet mignon. We had a place in Hawaii as well, but I didn't enjoy going there until I could travel there by myself. I always got sunburned and had to smear myself with aloe for a week.

Still, NOTHING compared to camping, sleeping in a tent, and telling stories around the fire..

That is, until a dingo ate my baby..

We used to go up to Schenectady to visit my grandfather's brother then hit Storytown while my grandparents would go to Lake George. They liked to hit the racetrack up there.

Then there was the trip to DC and Philadelphia. THAT was probably the one that ended family vacations forever because my brother was such a pain in the ass the whole trip. The ONLY thing he liked was seeing the Spectrum in Philly.

BTW -- one of the best episodes ever of "The Wonder Years" was the one about their last family vacation.
