View Full Version : The Shining

I watched this movie for the first time ever over the weekend. I guess I was always afraid or not interested when I was younger. Fucking great. I just wasn't satisfied with the ending. My boyfriend thought I was crazy as I laughed at the O&A references. Now I'll go read the book.

Definetly read the book, it has a lot of elements that weren't used by Kubrick.

I read the book during a time I was stuck at a place with no phone, radio, or TV. I was too scared to go to sleep, so the only thing to do was keep reading. I read it from cover to cover straight through. AWESOME book!

Anyone hear the shining bit yesterday on O&A? They were playing a "Little Marky" Christian thing (That same kid from the "Diary of a Fetus" thing) They then recreated most of the movie using that kid's voice.

I dont remember the bitches name or the exact quote but...

I'm not going to hurt you Olive, I'm just gonna bash your fucking head in!

=

Wendy Torrance; but nice call back on Shelly Duvall, the movie 'Popeye' came out the same year as The Shining.

=

I see Kubrick's version of The Shining as his 're-imaging' or 're-imagining' or whaver industry word fits, I dont know the industry. But I do know the Kubrick has very specific ideas for how he wants his films, to a fault some would say, even King ripped the Movie version back in the day.

I saw it in theatres, so I'm biased, I dont know how well it has aged, how the suspense holds, coz, without giving spoilers, like the first 'Alien' in terms of the movie tries to work on a constant 'what's around the corner' suspense vs. actual violence. Does it work for the new viewer today? Beats me.

=

I was in Estes Park, Colorado a few years back and tried to get a room at The Stanley, the place King and wife stayed at; no luck but from the place I stayed at I'd see The Stanley with the Rockies in the background, and it a striking scene. They filmed the movie elsewhere, but that look; big ole hotel with the Rockies right in the background, pretty cool.

In terms of O&A and movie references, few things would leave me rolling more than when I'd heard Li'l Jimmy drop lines from "JFK" on the old WNEW shows.
