View Full Version : Jets over New York City

Around noon today I was outside my building in Downtown Brooklyn and suddenly heard a terrifingly loud jet engine and suddenly it got VERY loud and people started scrambling out to see what was going on. It turned out it was a bunch of fighter jets flying very low and very fast and it was scary as hell! People around me (myself included) thought there was an attack or something. Then people started saying something about fleet week and it started making some sense, but still; low fast and loud jets over Downtown Brooklyn is a bit unsettling. Anyone else witness this?

I saw them too. I was in Brooklyn. They were really low and really loud. I didnt realize it was Fleet Week already. Very cool to see.

I saw them too, over Bayonne and there was also a big cargo plane with them. They flew over twice, then twice again about a half hour later. It was cool, but kinda freaky at the same time. I felt better when I was also reminded about "Fleet Week".

When you're a Jet you're a Jet all the way.

In Jersey, I saw two planes (not the same type - one looked like a fighter, the other looked like a cargo jet/airliner) flying VERY close to each other in Middlesex County. It kind of looked like an escort or something.

Wow...at around 1 this afternoon I remember hearing an extremely loud plane fly overhead. I was too lazy to go and check out what it was, and usually when its cold out planes sound a lot louder, but I guess the noise was from jets for fleet week. Hmm...yes.

I just threw a paper airplane out my window. Perhaps this explains it?

When I was stationed in Pensacola Fla in the late 80's my base was very close to the Naval Air Station where the Blue Angels were based. I used to get to see them practice for their shows almost every day. It really rocked!!!

Nearby here in Winchester, VA, there are C-130 transport planes flying all the time. Sometimes there are A-10 Warthogs. The Warthogs are totally cool. They can manuever like nothing you've ever seen.

They're ugly little bastards, but cool nonetheless...

Last time I saw fighter jets over the city was a few years ago when the power went out. Not the huge blackout that happened last year but the time before that when there was a fire in the powerplant someplace around there. You could see the smoke billowing out by the river and before the reports went out no one knew what was going one. Huge clouds of black smoke and then the fighter jets start flying by. We thought some crazy stuff was going on but when we found out it was just a worthless power outage I got pissed because the showing of Metropolis I was supposed to see got canceled.

I load bombs on F/A-18Cs all day long. Those things are going to kill my hearing and destroy my back.

This thread reminded me of after Sept. 11, when they locked down all of the airports.

For a full day or 2 there was not a sound in the sky. Then all of a sudden, the fighters started SCREAMING overhead. Quite un-nerving. Also made me realize how I am able to tune out everyday air traffic.
