Someone came into my store today asking for a
twenty for two tens. I thought that was a little weird, but whatever.
So I give him the twenty, and a second later he's standing there with a
single in his hand. I thought something was up and I even asked the guy
if he was sure I didn't give him a twenty. Still, I didn't want
to call him out and create a ruckus over $19. So I just counted my
drawer as soon as he left and it was exactly $19 short. I called the
cops and an officer came in order to get a description and all that and
the only reason I even did that is so that he doesn't go around and do
it to all the other stores in town. The only thing that gets me is why
someone would risk having something like that (petty theft?) on his
record over a measly nineteen bucks.

If you watch the movie Kingpin carfully, you see Woody Harrelson pull that stunt when he is in the convienience store and the guy behind the counter gives him a hard time about the "freebies" for cream in his coffee. I think what they do is the fold a 20 in half long ways with a $1 bill underneath and then ask you for change and when you look at the register, they switch the bill and you give them change for a 20 in exchange for a buck. Beware the long folded bill!

That's why you always count it out in front of the person, even if it's
a single bill. They can't scam you if you say 20 dollar bill
while looking at the twenty dollar bill.
I totally believe someone risking it.

I used to get the "flim-flam" all the time when I worked at a movie theater. It happened so often you HAD to call them on it. A couple times it came down to the dickhead, me, a manager, and a police officer (they were usually there) counting out my drawer. I was never wrong.

Most just put there head down and prepare for the Miranda rights and the cuffs. Only one guy fought, and I'll tell you, police mase is a powerful thing. The cop doused his face, just let loose in that small stuffy countroom, and my eyes were burning! The guy was vomiting.
