They're the last thing I'll rent for some reason, but once I start watching them I really enjoy 'em! I think the idea of having to read subtitles is somehow exhausting but it's not really.

Here are some memorable foreign films I've seen:

The Motorcycle Diaries - Spanish

Tin Drum - German

Life is Beautiful- Italian

Red - French

While - French

Blue - French

Europa, Europa- German

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown - Spanish

I'm a huge Hayao Miyazaki fan.
Spirited Away is my favorite animated film of all time, and one of my
favorites overall.

Some of my doozies:

Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Hidden Fortress, Ikiru and Ran - by Akira Kurasawa. I'm still trying to get my hands on some of his film noir/gangster films like Red Beard and Stray Dog. Seven Samurai is the greatest movie of all time, in my opinion.

"Z" by Costa Gravitz

Amelie - France

Amores Peros - Mexico

The Devil's Backbone - Spain

To Live - (Chinese - there are several films by the same name)

Come and See, (I think it's Polish, maybe Russian - harshest WWII movie I've ever seen. Even more than Saving Private Ryan)

Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries - by Ingmar Bergman. Genius.

The Audition - creepiest fucking movie ever. Korean, set in Japan, if I remember correctly.

Raise the Red Lantern - China

The Bicycle Thief - Italy. One of the greatest movies of all time.

Three Seasons - by a Veitnamese-American director, but shot in Vietnam. Great movie. One of those indies that Harvey Keitel supported production of and acted in.

Cyclo, Scent of Green Papaya, and another good movie I can't remember the name of, from a Vietnamese director.

Battle of Algiers - unbelievably precient film, given the Iraq war. Great background story on the making of the film as well.

Pixote - hyper-realist film about street kids in Brazil. Creepy reality, and an interesting background story on the making of the film and the fate of its star.

If you like action then Casshern is one of the most intense movies ever made.

Live action that acts like its a crazed anime. Tons of fun to watch and has some amazing scenes in it.

Japanese.

There is the Korean anime Wonderful Days
which pushes the limits of animation and has a good story to boot, but
I am not sure if anime is your thing.

Agreeing with Yerdaddy Amelie is also a very impressive movie, you should check it out. Makes you feel happy inside when it's over.

Good thread - and some great movies already mentioned.

"The Vanishing" - one of my favorite creepy/suspence movies of all time (avoid American remake of the same name);

"The Killer"/"Hard Boiled"/"A Better Tomorrow 2" -John Woo & Chow Yun Fat's modern action classics; gangster movies with the subtle subtext of Hong Kong in the midst of change

"Rashomon" - everyone has stolen from this movie; still holds up

"The Seventh Seal" - Only if you have already seen "Wild Strawberrys" or "Fanny & Alexander"

"The Best Intentions" - yeah, it can be like watching paint dry, but I love this story of Ingmar Bergman's parents, directed by Bille August; the female lead, Pernella August, would go on to give birth to Darth Vader!

"Pelle The Conqueror" - how a movie can wrap in both hopefulness and hopelessness is beyond me;

"Run Lola Run" - Very cool flick

"My Father's Glory"/"My Mother's Castle" - French movies, also sort of like watching paint dry, but maybe my favorite "coming of age" stories of all time

"The Swimming Pool" - Modern French film - HOT!

"The Leopard"/"La Dolce Vita"/"The Seven Samurai" - MUST see classics

"Zentropa" - Funky, cool movie

"Europa Europa" - Jewish teenager tries to survive in WW2; maybe the closest we'll ever get to a film version of "The Painted Bird"

"Where is My Friend's Home?" / "And Life Goes On" / "Through the Olive Tree" - AN AMAZING trilogy from one of the greatest directors working today; Iranian Abbas Kiarostami, who has also made cool films like "The White Balloon," "A Taste of Cherry," "Ten" and "Close Up."

What I love so much about the way this particular way this trilogy is handled is because they are constructed like Russian nesting-egg dolls - the second movie is a fictional account of the actors from the first, while the third movie is fictional account of a director making the second movie - all completely screwing around with what is real and what is fake. They are very simply little movies, but man I love them. Whenever the AFI Theatre plays any of his films, I am there.

There's this one German film I really enjoyed...

Kyle: "I'll just try the first one. 'You must be 18 to enter this website.' Okay. 'Welcome to German Sick Fetish Video. If you are under 18, do not—' Well, okay."
German: "Du hast Scheiße gern."
Kyle: "Dude! It's a lady getting pooed on!"
Stan: "Whoa! Is it Cartman's mom?"
Cartman: "Oh. Very funny."
Kyle: "Hey! It is Cartman's mom!"
German: "Essen mein Scheiße."
Cartman's Mom: "All righty then."
Cartman: "Aw, son of a bitch!"

Over the weekend I saw Tell No One (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0362225/). French film. Thriller/Mystery. Very good. It's showing in select theaters in NYC.

A woman is brutally murdered on vacation with her husband. Eight years later, he gets an email from her.

It stars the beautiful Marie-Josée Croze. You might remember her as the Dutch assassin in the movie Munich.

I'm a big fan of foreign films, but hate when they're dubbed.

One that hasn't been mentioned which I love is a German film from 1995, "Sophie Scholl: The Final Days."

My mom recently came over to my place and I showed her that DVD and said she would watch it. I explained that it was subtitled and she kinda rolled her eyes. She reluctantly took the DVD with her, but said that my father most likely won't watch it.

About a week later I visited my parents and they both couldn't stop talking about how great that film was.

I was really happy, then told them I have an Italian film for them next called "The Keys to the House." Again I got the rolling of the eyes. I guess it's a real turn off for some to have to read a film, but once you get wrapped up in the story, the subtitles really aren't distracting.

I just watched No Man's Land last week. I thought that it was really good. It takes place in a trench in between opposing lines during the Bosnian war. Really good jabs at the UN.

Oldboy was fucking fantastic. Korean Action/Drama about a guy who was kidnapped, drugged and tortured for like 15 years, then realeased. I highly recommend it.

I enjoy foreign films. The best one I saw, and probably one of the 5 best films ever, was The Lives of Others.

One of the less famous ones I really enjoyed, I saw last year - Reprise.

And, you know, the famous stuff like anything of Fellini, or Bergman, or Kurosawa.

Y Tu Mama Tambien is pretty good.

I haven't seen it but one of my favorite lines from The Office (US) is when Michael says he saw it with Jan. He says, "It means, "Throw Mama from the Tambien."

Some of my faves:

Au Revoir, Les Enfants
Seventh Seal
Old Boy
400 Blows
Wings of Desire
Life is Beautiful
Breaking The Waves
Cinema Paradiso

I also liked The Vanishing. And, yes, avoid the American remake. They completley ruined the ending.

Maribel Verdu was so sexy in that flick. It was worth the occasional man butt and penis.

I loved Delicatessen and City of the Lost Children (and I loved Alien Resurection too, fuck off. For some odd reason, I still haven't seen Amelie.)

A Belgian Gem was Man Bites Dog (see my current sig pic), definitely a pioneer in guerilla filmaking. Sickening and hilarious. You oscillate wildly between feeling sorry for and despising the pro(an)tagonist.

Another guerilla film I just saw was Cavite. Technically an American film, the dialogue is half Tagalog, and was shot completely in the Philipines. I liked it. If I was a film reviewer getting paid for a quote, I would call it "taut" and "suspenseful". Where did Neill Dela Llana and Ian Gamazon go?

A great mindfuck from Japan was Tetsuo. I know paulo's with me on this one.

I just re-watched the Korean film Oldboy and thoroughly re-enjoyed it, and was re-sickened as well.

For old-school Australian nazi-punkery, I'll always hit up Romper Stomper. Plus Russell Crowe is dreamy, right paulo?

I remember really liking Kurasawa's Dreams, but I don't remember that much about it, other than cherry blossoms and a dark tunnel.

The original Russian Solaris was a hypnotic masterpiece. I can't be bothered with that new one they made, because it would be impossible for mainstream American filmakers to top the original.

I really liked Ripley's Game, with Malkovich as the creepy lead. I even enjoyed it when the Bostonian retard took over as Ripley in the Hollywood sequel (prequel?).

High Tension was cool, if only for the frightening villain getting road-head from a decapitated noggin. On top of that, you get the brutal massacre of rural innocents and lesbian psychopathy, and even a cut-off saw with a wood blade used as a weapon.

Wings of Desire was a thoroughly awesome film. Add in the musical cameos and it's gold. I can't forgive Wenders for giving Hollywood the power to cast Wannabe Elvis in a remake. I also can't forgive myself for never having seen Far Away So Close.

Guillermo Del Toro's The Devil's Backbone was a great story with a subtext of ghostliness. Fans of his newer stuff should definitely check it out.

There's many more....

You are only the second person I know to have even watched "City of Lost Children", the first being the person who asked me to watch it. I haven't seen "Delicatessen". I don't know if you'll like "Amelie", it has quite a different tone to it then "City.." but visually beautiful as well and the soundtrack is amazing and gorgeous.

I find myself liking the films in which children are put in adult situations. Examples:

Au Revoir Les Enfants
Vitus
City of God
This Is England

I should probably explore French films more. I really enjoyed Delicatessan, which was mentioned above, and Eyes Without a Face is one of my alltime favorites.
