spanish in high school

whats the fuckin point of learnin spanish? just because we get all these mexicans over here means we have to learn their language? shouldnt they have to learn english? all these immigrants come over here and think they can do as they please. when i become president, im gonna make sure no immigrants can move over here.

<p>There's so many different things I could do to you in this thread that I'm not sure where to start.</p><p>I'll just say that the 2 years I was forced to take Spanish in High School were without a doubt the biggest waste of my time while there. I took a language the 2 required years and got right out.&nbsp; I've forgotten 90% of it and have no interest in learning any more Spanish.&nbsp; </p>

i took about 7 years of spanish between high school and college.&nbsp; i actually really liked it and i got a 95% on the regents exam...i have no use for it nowadays

I do have to say, in this day and age that we preach openess and tolerance, schools only offer Spanish and ASL as 2nd languages. <p>There are schools that MAKE someone take Spanish?</p><p>In all of my schools, yeah, you had to take a language class, but you could pick...usually between Spanish, French, German, Chinese or Japanese.&nbsp; By the time I hit high school, there was a good 8 or 9 languages you could pick from.</p><p>But hey, if forced Spanish makes MrPink suffer, I'm all for it.</p>

<p>my Spanish teacher was a friend of my Mom so i just got by with a D-(70) avg...&nbsp; this teacher was engaged to a guy who had a drug problem. shortly before they were to be married they found him under a barge off one of the Jersey City piers. Supposedly he got 'f'd' up on drugs and he layed down on the edge of the pier and eventually fell in. there was a group of people there but nobody saw him fall in...</p><p>ah, memories</p>

<p>I have to chime in here too. EVERY immigrant community comes here
and doesn't speak the language. When the Jews landed here, they largely
spoke combinations of Yiddish and German and Polish. Look at turn of
the century photos of Little Italy in NY.&nbsp; Not a single sign in
English. And the Irish who spoke English (badly) were such a bunch of
hoodlums, they coined the phrase &quot;The Paddy Wagon&quot; (There's Paddy
O'Rielly, Paddy Walsh, Paddy O'Flanagan etc). Everyone's memory gets
conveniently short when it comes to other groups, but theirs had all
the same problems of crime, poverty, and education. </p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>To
answer Alice's point about some groups assimilating faster, it usually
has to do with who's getting in. For example, the India immigrants of
the 60's were largely well educated people from their middle and upper
classes. And they did well here, quickly. Now the Indian immigrants are
more of a cross section of the Indian population, and they now are
having the same problems every other group does. &nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>And
BTW, I love it when my fellow paisans talk about &quot;Illegal Immigrants&quot;.
They used to call the Italian immigrants W.O.P.'s (With Out Papers).

But&nbsp;in the U.S. you&nbsp;can get any and all documents in your native language (such as drivers license tests for example).&nbsp;</font></p><p><font size="2">As someone who lives in possibly the most diverse city in the world, I see no problem with having to hear, and even maybe learn, another language.</font></p>
