View Full Version : Cell Phone More Distracting than Car Passenger?

Why do talking on cell phones while driving distract people more than talking to someone sitting right next to them? And it's not the act of holding the phone--people who use the "no hands" units get in accidents too. Is it because it's harder for our brain to process a bodiless voice? Just curious if anyone has any theories about this.

<p><font size="1">Is it because it's harder for our brain to process a bodiless voice?</font></p><p> </p><p>I believe that is exactly it! I can carry on a conversation with 3 other humans in the car, but once the phone rings, I loose focus. Immediately.</p><p>So normally, I will get what they are trying to say, and ask to call them back later.</p>

<p>I don't like to drive while on the phone. I need to be alert because I'm a defensive driver and here in Jersey most drivers are OFFENSIVE.</p><p>Sometimes I find a passenger distracting, but that's just me. </p>

Oh I'm the same way I need complete focus. if I'm gonna change lanes or make a turn or something I even turn down my radio so there is nothing distracting me.

sometimes i think you get 'too relaxed' like as if you were in your living room talking on the couch and you forget exactly what you are suppose to be doing...

I think most accidents happen when people are answering or dialing the phone.

I can't afford a cell phone, so I'm driving really safe.

i also have a blackberry pager for work and it's more distracting than a phone... i guess it's like reading the paper while you're driving being you're trying to read e-mails... not a smart thing to do

I have the Blackberry, too. When I first got it, I got addicted to that
"Tetris" game it has (Brickbreaker?) and I would play while sitting in
traffic. <br />

Do you think Hally Berry owns a BlackBerry? Because that would be kinda funny.

I've had a few close calls while dialing my phone, but I like to think I balance that out with the people I've helped by having my phone on the road. I've probably had more problems with smoking and driving than phoning and driving, though. Especially that time I was stupid enough to use a Zippo to light a cig, and dropped it while it was lit.

<p><font size="1">I've probably had more problems with smoking and driving than phoning and driving, though.</font></p><p>TRUE DAT! I don't know how many times I've gone to flick my cigar out the window and ended up with ash all over myself. You freak out for a second and start trying to get it off your shirt. And I've thrown a cigarette out the window and it's come back in a few too many times.</p>

The other aspect is that the passengers are also watching the
road. You may turn to talk to your friend, but you turn back
quick when they scream "HOLY SHIT!"<br />

Yeah, that's true. Someone gasping and shoving their foot through the floorboard usually makes me look back at the road.

<p>one thing i've noticed since they made it illegal to use the cellphone while driving in Nj is that I get 'more' ticked when i see people using it.... especially when you see them swaying/veering out of their lane or doing 50 in the left lane... then they look in the mirror and floor it to 80</p><p>but it's no problem when i use it being i'm SO good at driving while on it ... YEAH RIGHT!</p>
