Just wondering if there's any way to make access to files on your desktop or wherever on your computer only password protected. So when you try to open a folder of pictures or text documents for example, you will get a prompt to enter your password, and then you gain access.

Anything like that available? Is it an option I have already and I just wasn't aware of?

I don't know how to do what
you described, but I can tell you how to lock folders from other
accounts on your computer if you are using XP if you
want.

use the Help Utility... left click on your START at the bottom left corner and there is a Help and Support item

not trying to be a wisenhiemer, it's easy to follow and it would be rewarding to get it done yourself

"give a guy a fish, he'll eat for one day... teach a guy to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime"

If you're not going to help me, then I don't want to hear anymore from you in my thread Funkman. You don't think I looked in the Help forum before I asked for help? Maybe I'm not searching the right topics, but I keep getting shit about the account passwords, and that's not what I'm asking.

You see, that's not what I was talking about. I know I can create my own account that has private folders. I have that. And I know about if my screen saver comes on, I can prompt my password to have to be re-entered to get back in. I have that on already.

I mean on my own account, can I protect files from even myself? Just a folder sitting on my desktop. I'd have to enter a password to view the shit.

With a stock install of Windows XP, you can't add a password to a
folder. You can use third-party add-ons like HBox pointed
out. The only other viable way of doing it with XP and no add-ons
is to compress the folder.

If you create a new "ZIPPED"
folder, and put the data you want in it, you can add a password to it,
but it also affects the way you access those files. Some files
can't be used straight from the ZIPPED folder, and would have to be
extracted from the folder first. After creating the folder and
dragging the files to it, open the folder, right-click somewhere in it
(not on a file, click on some white space) and choose "add
password". Not the most elegant solution, but it's an alternative.

only way to do it is password protect a compressed file, or download third party software

Symantec released something a few years ago...Norton Lock or something like that. I'll have to check my archives at home for the exact name. But it worked great, you could password protect folders and prevent any kind of alteration with the folders. I don't remember if it was a freeware app, but Norton did put it out. I'll check when I get home and let you know.
