Squirming, Dying Animal--What do you do?

I've been faced with this more than once being my route home from work is a busy, two-lane highway and all I see is roadkill. A couple of times, though, I've come upon a freshly hit animal, still squirming in place and as I swerve around it, look in my rear-view mirror and proceed to cry the rest of the drive home, I'm wondering what, if anything I could do to put this animal out of its misery. Should I have stopped to pick it up to take it to a vet? Should I call the cops? Should I try to "finish it off"?
What would you do, if anything? Is this something you wouldn't give a second thought to or is it something that would haunt you, like it does me, if you do nothing?

This is a sensitve subject and should be taken on a case by case basis. If it's a wild animal, you should call animal control. If it's a possible pet, you should take it to the closest emergency vetrinary hospital. If it's a deer, and you hit it with your car in West Virginia.... you should kick the shit out of it for fucking up your car. Then you should charge the next person you see, for the right to take it home for dinner (it's legal there).

<p>Two stories...</p><p>&nbsp;On one occasion, I was driving through the park and saw 6 foot black snake in front of me. I stopped to move it out of the road so it wouldn't get hit. As I approached, a redneck in a pickup going the other way, intentionally swerved into my lane and ran the snake over. I hope the mice that the snake never got to eat ended up infesting the redneck's house.</p><p>&nbsp;On another occasion, I was on a date with a girl who was a big time cat lover. A cat ran out in front of us (she was driving), and was very definitely killed. She didn't see it. I knew she'd be devastated by killing a cat, so I told her it was a groundhog. She was still upset, but if she had known it was a cat she would have been an emotional wreck. I cared for her and didn't want her to go through this mental anguish. I also knew I wouldn't get laid that night, if she knew it was a cat. Yes... I'm sensitive AND a horny man!</p>
