Bay City Roller in porn case can stay a nurse

THE former drummer with the Bay City Rollers retained his right to work as a nurse yesterday after a disciplinary hearing decided not to strike him off the nursing register.
Derek Longmuir, 50, was sentenced to 300 hours' community service last March when he admitted two charges of having indecent photographs, videos and computer disks of children at his home in Edinburgh.
He also admitted making indecent pictures of children by downloading them from the internet. However, the professional conduct committee of the UK Central Council for Nursing Midwifery and Health Visiting decided yesterday that he should only receive a caution.
After three hours of evidence, it found him guilty of misconduct but ruled that he was not a risk to the public.
Eunice Foster, the committee chairman, told him: "The committee does not condone or excuse your actions in any way." The formal caution will remain on his record for five years.
Longmuir claimed during the hearing that he had not looked at the pornographic material, which had belonged to a friend who had been using his computer. He also said he had pleaded guilty to avoid a "media circus".
He added: "Please understand that while nursing might be the only source of income for me, it's more than a job, it's my very being."
Mary Scanlon, the Conservative health spokesman, said the decision "made a mockery" of new regulations that meant every person working with children must be checked, monitored and registered.
A total of 22 pornographic videos and 40 computer discs with 117 images of indecent material were found at his home by police. Longmuir achieved international fame in the Seventies when the Bay City Rollers had a string of hits including Shang-a-Lang and Bye Bye Baby.
