In the 100+ years that the World Series has been played, which is the greatest series of all time?

Sorry to Yankee fans, but I think you can make a pretty strong case for the 2001 series. (Arizona Diamondbacks vs. NY Yankees). Here's why:

First, it went the full 7 games. Second, it had three of the most dramatic games in Series history:

Game 4: Tino Martinez hits a 2 run homer to tie the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, and Jeter wins the game with a walk off, solo home run just after midnight in the 11th.

Game 5: In a near repeat of game 4, Scott Brosius hit a 2 run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game. Soriano gets a big hit in the bottom of the 12th for the win.

Game 7: series tied, and the Yankees up 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth, the Diamondbacks dramatically come back against near-invincible closer Mariano Rivera and win with an RBI single from Luis Gonzalez ending the game and the series with one swing of the bat.

There are some damned famous moments in WS history (Fisk's HR in the 75 series, Mookie's grounder in the '86 series, Carter's HR against Mitch Williamks in '93, Gibson's clutch homer in '88, etc.), but as far as I know, no series has had as many dramatic moments as the 2001 one.

Any other nominees?

I'd have to say the 1986 is one of the greatest.

I'm not even a Mets fan.

Down by 2 games, and still being able to come back and win.

soon as I read the topic I thought of 2001. Although I am a Yankee Fan, it was such an intense series. Small market team beating up the big guys.

The Yankee's Mets series was a great one, but that may just have been a NY thing

Shameless plug

Actually, you could really make a case for the 1960 series, with the Pirates/Yanks...the Mazeroski series...

You had everything in that series, offense, great D, drama, questionable decisions(why start Art Ditmar twice, and over Whitey, the Chairman of the Board, in Game 7, where he got blown out of the water and saved by the heroics of Bobby Shantz, only to have Ralph Terry give up the bomb)

Its also unbelievable the amount of offence the Yankees put up in that series....they won their three games 16-3, 10-0, and 12-0

2004.

But for historical purposes, I would have liked to have seen the 1919, 1926, 1955 and 1968 World Series.

Subway Series. Two of the best ballclubs in the history of the game. And a perfect game to boot.

Classic.

"Did you catch all of that in your mouth??"
"You betcha!!!!!"
"That's disgusting"
"Shut up and keep sucking!"
There's been some great ones in recent history, but for my money the greatest Series was in 1991 with the Twins and the Cardinals. 3 of the 7 games went into extra innings, and Jack Morris pitched all 10 innings of game 7 for a 1-0 victory.
A close second has to be the '75 series, and not just because I'm a die-hard Reds fan.
