What exactly is international waters? One person told me its 3 miles out. I always thought it was 12. But if it is 3 miles out, what if you're in a cove? Is it 3 miles from the end of that cove? Or your destination?

I always thought it was 7 miles. And yes.... monkey knife fights are legal in international waters.

I'm in the USCG, so let me give you the breakdown.....International Waters begin at 12 miles out. If there is any confusion where they begin , it is usually marked on charts used by the vessel.

As far as smoking weed or murder, you are still subject to the US law if you are in a US flagged vessel. We can board any US flagged vessel regardless of where it is, for any reason, with or without the owners permission. US law will still apply.

Foreign vessels can be boarded in US waters at any time by us, if in international waters we will get permission from the country of which the vessel is flagged, not the owner, unless the owner allows us on board.

Sewage and garbage can be dumped at 3 miles out I think.

Or 12 miles from the furthest point of land? Another dumb question, are there buouys out there that mark it?

from the country. meaning a counrty like greece, you can be 30 miles
away from mainland, but still in greek waters cause you are like 10
miles from Crete or something.

i dont really know, just what i was told

ag,

I'm not exactly sure how it is detemined, but it is marked navigational charts required by vessels. So you should be able to determine by checking your LAT/LONG.

As far as bouys marking it, I don't think so , but I can't be sure. Bouys need to be anchored, that seems pretty far out for that but it's possible some places I guess. If I were a Quatermaster I would be a little more help sorry.

Hey it's not a dumb question, we have Officers that don't even know the CG has ships.

The international community realized that something needed to be done to standardize these borders. The first United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS I) met in 1958 to begin discussions on these and other oceanic issues. In 1960 UNCLOS II was held and in 1973 UNCLOS III took place. Following UNCLOS III, a treaty was developed that attempted to tackle the boundary issue. It specified that all coastal countries would have a 12 nm territorial sea and a 200 nm Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Each country would control the economic exploitation and environmental quality of their EEZ.
