I think it's a great idea. So many young people are depressed, and are doing drugs, legal and illegal. 4 years in the service will build children into men, and you can get a great education. I'm 30, I enlisted into the Air Force back in 1999. It was the best thing I ever did. No more weed, pills and slacking.

Nothing wrong with people who go in because they want to. But being made to go.... Well that just defeats the purpose of being a "Free" Country. If there is a big disaster then yes . If we are invaded or somthing. Otherwise No.

It's been proven that drafted soldiers perform dramatically worse than
volunteers....mainly because they don't want to be there. It takes a
special kind of person to be able to embrace that kind of lifestyle.
Not everybody can do it, and those who can't most likely will serve
little good on the battlefield.  Furthermore, I live in a free country, and freedom to me means nobody but myself gets to decide what fight is worth dying for. And
I'm sorry, but the military is not the answer for all our societal
woes. Education, after school programs, better law enforcement, better
drug policies will have a much better effect on those problems...but that's just the democrat in me talking...

Well, for one...its not really needed.....I would be in favour of bringing it back only in case of a national emergency...like if the country was being invaded or something like that...And Jeff's exactly right about draftees being awful soldiers for the most part...As an example, look what happened to the Army of the Potomac after most of the 1861 men were either in the ground or had gone back home...it became a shadow of its former self...

Look I'm sure Military service worked for you,thats great, and I know people that it helped also. But it also doesn't work for alot of people. especially if they are forced into it.  ok, and i'm sure the shape this country is in now, your not gonna find as many people willing to go fight for now than you would back in the day. so a draft is a bad idea all around.If people want to fight let them fight. if people want to protest let them protest.just keep them off my lawn.

I'm 31, I went to see Star Wars Episode I back in 1999 and didn't enlist in any of the armed forces.  It was not the best movie I ever saw but I did enjoy the lightsaber duel and thought Darth Maul shouldn't have been killed off until Episode III.I don't do any drugs (legal or not), I'm not depressed. And I'm worried about those who do choose to serve and protect citzen's like me being used by Chicken Hawks who didn't want to serve themselves and used the connections they had to ensure they didn't come into harms way.The armed forces are great, and they can help a lot of people who need a direction in life, but the draft isn't the way to do it. <a href="http://www.fox.com/24" target="_blank"><img src="http://members.cox.net/nicksporsche/wwjbd.jpg" border="0" /> "We're putting the band back together."</a>

I'm a man, I have a great education, I was never on weed or pills,
and I'm not a slacker. I have a good job with a pension. I did this
without spending four years in military service.Why should I
have been forced into service when there was no war when I was young
enough to be drafte, to get where I'd be without it?

I was in the US Army.  (Infantry 1/18th)I'm all for re-activating those who have already ETS'd. That's the agreement I signed. Even though I've been out since 2000....I would rejoin in a minute if they called me.  But an all-out DRAFT?!  No way.  The soldiers wont be motivated.

the draft is a bad ideai am gonna be 14, if a draft came back i would most likley be sent off when i am 18 because of all the warfare going on in the middle east.

funny thing; tonight i spoke to a recruiter.  i take the mep(sp) on thursday.  no commitment, just to see what i'm elligible for.  i'm 28, college educated, and have not accomplished many of the goals i set at 18.most of the people i know, who did the college thing, have changed jobs many times and are in fields that they didn't study.  and look at the want ads- shit jobs, low wages.college is a great way to sew your wild oats, but you have to admit , ppl who do the military then college seem to be in better shape.
