Just out of curiousity, me and my friend were talking about this today. How do you go about getting a job like that? Are there like special credentials that you have to have?

All you need is to have someone in baseball beleive that you are a good evaluator of talent.

Well, there is no real set way. Are you a coach? If you're a coach with a good player you may run into a scout at a game. You can talk to him, let him know what you think of other guys in the league. Stuff like that. A friend of my father's was a scout and the way he got into it was a friend of his got into the Twins front office. He would go to all the high school and college games he could around here and call his friend when he saw someone good. A few guys he recommened were drafted and made the majors (none with the Twins) but they saw that he had an eye for talent so they put him on the payroll.

While this certainly isn't written in stone, you really need to be involved with the game in some compacity for basically most of your life. You need to be around the game and be able to judge talent. You have no idea how hard it really is to tell who can first, make it to the big leagues and second, succeed once there. Once you're involved in the game and can properly judge talent, hit up The Boss or Cashman, I'm sure they'd love to give you a job.

Actually, the new trend in baseball is hiring all these Harvard and Yale math geniuses to be your GM....an offshoot of the Billy Beane Moneyball thing....

Guys like Epstein and DePodesta and people of that ilk are really all the rage right now...
