I heard the new Weezer single off of Make-Believe this morning and it's as awesome as their previous stuff. Now I have 2 cds to buy in May.

I was hoping they would put out more self titled albums (with different color backgrouds) to follow along with the Blue and Green albums.

Doesn't make it not true.

Rivers is a douchebag-tastic egomaniac without Matt Sharp. They should have never come back after "Pinkerton."

New song sounds good. Sounds much better than anything off of the Green Album and Maladroit. Hopefully they'll get back to the Blue Album-type music they used to make.

holy christ! someone finally admitted it! the truth will set me free as well. the first time i listened to pinkerton i thought it sucked too. i listened to the radio "hit" el scorcho and thats about all. 3 years later or so tossed it in and realized it was pretty damn great. maybe it was just the whole single conciousness thing, or that i'm just some lemming that likes things when everyone else does, but pretends to wanna be different or something. dare i say it a poser! oh wait, yeah everyones a so called poser anyhow. aw hell, i'm gonna go jump off a bridge.

by the way did jesus bring anybody else an easter basket today? mommy said he rose from the dead just to hide my eggs and bring me chocolate bunnies!

To be fair, EVERYONE pretty much hated "Pinkerton" when it came out, critics and fans alike. It got savaged in reviews and sold fuck-all.

I'll fully admit it...I bought it the day it came out, listened to it once, and then didn't listen to again for like another year. It took a good long while for it to grow on me.

EAT A DICK, RIVERS!!!

Visit this Website

quote: Okay, let's not be so hard on ourselves here: I'm pretty sure this is all Rivers' fault. Pinkerton triumphed by being an uncomfortably honest self-portrait of Cuomo. On Make Believe, his personality has vanished beneath layers of self-imposed universality, writing non-specific power ballads like he apprenticed with Diane Warren, and whoah-oh-ohing a whole lot in lieu of coming up with coherent or interesting thoughts.

quote:
Considering Weezer supposedly went through hundreds of songs and several discarded albums to arrive at this final product, the laziness of this songwriting borders on the offensive. Whether recycling dynamics from the band's back catalog (see: "Perfect Situation") or taking the easy Mother Goose rhyme (see: every fucking song here), these 12 tracks sound as if they were dashed off in an afternoon's work, maybe with Rubin holding the band at gunpoint. The one half-decent song on the record, "This Is Such a Pity", fails to even maintain its status as a pleasant Cars homage, interjecting a guitar solo that sounds like it was cut from the original score to Top Gun.

So does Make Believe completely ruin not just present-day Weezer, but retroactively, any enjoyment to be had from their earlier work? I don't know-- I'm too scared to re-listen to those first two albums-- but it certainly appears that Make Believe will expertly extract the last remaining good graces the critical community has to offer latter-day Weezer, unless my colleagues' memories of slow-dancing with Ashley to "Say It Ain't So" are more powerful than I can possibly imagine. Of course, if Ashley went on to break your heart, fellow critic, Make Believe might be just the medicine you need; put it on repeat and watch your emotional scar be obliterated as collateral damage in the torpedoing of Weezer's legacy.

Everything I've heard off of this album is a sonic abortion at BEST.

If you buy/download/steal/WHATEVER this album, you're an idiot, and don't deserve to have functioning ears. Do the right thing and give them to a deaf person and stop raping them with shitty new Weezer albums, you fucking ANIMAL.
1979 << On the streets of your town... >> "You can tell some lies about the good times we've had, but I've kissed your mother twice...and now I'm working on your dad..."

That's exactly the problem...Weezer IS terrible. If you can even call this band that still exists "Weezer."

I love those first two albums...and I enjoyed the two after that (the last one even more so than "The Green Album")...but everything I've heard off of this new album just amplifies the warning signs that started creeping in as soon as they released "Hash Pipe"...Weezer now has no soul. Not soul as in "funky"...soul as in emotion, pure and simple. Rivers got so burned by the initial rejection of "Pinkerton" en masse by both critics and the public that he's gone out of his way to make the most shallow, inoffensive and dull music as possible without actually investing even an iota of himself into it...the thing that made Weezer's songs so great to begin with.

That, and he apparently thinks shitty 70's light-rock is what he should be aping these days, as opposed to Pavement and The Cars.

Weezer died when Matt Sharp left the band. Listen to the first two Weezer albums...then listen to Sharp's great Rentals albums from the 90's. It's obvious he had a HUGE influence on shaping Weezer, and toning down Rivers' bullshit. Ever since he left, nobody's had the balls to stand up to Rivers because the music press and fans have built up as some kind of idiot savant genius, when really he's just an idiot with a raging ego and nobody around him to tell him "knock it the fuck off" when his albums go overboard on the wankery, which they now do CONSTANTLY.

I WANT to like the new Weezer album...the only problem is it sounds absolutely wretched. It's not pop...it doesn't rock...it just lurches and staggers along, like a drunken embarassing relative at a public function. It just plain sounds bad. Embarassingly so.

1979 << On the streets of your town... >> "You can tell some lies about the good times we've had, but I've kissed your mother twice...and now I'm working on your dad..."
