View Full Version : The PSP is Coming
http://www.ebgames.com/gmspImages/52/520683/eb/pt_PSPfrontWht.jpg
This beauty comes out Thursday (March 24th). Anyone planning on getting it? It comes packed with Spiderman 2 (The movie, not the game, on UMD) and a bunch of accessories for $250. It has bunch of great games coming out at launch too, including Metal Gear Acid, Wipeout Pure, Twisted Metal, Tony Hawk Underground 2 Remix and Spiderman 2 (The game). It can play music, movies and show pictures off of Memory Sticks. There are a bunch of movies being sold on UMD on Amazon for $14. Supposedly the screen is incredibly gorgeous and very scratch resistant. And apparently the battery is very weak, sometimes only lasting two hours depending on what you're using it for.
I'd love to get the thing, but I can't afford it right now.

I reserved the PSP and I'll probably pick it up. But I won't pay $14 for a UMD movie when I can buy the DVD and rip it to a memory stick for the same price, and still be able to watch the dvd at home.

How much memory is a memory stick? What kind of file do you rip the movie to for the Sony PCP to play it? Does this come with any games?

I believe the memory stick for the PSP contains 32mb.
I pre-ordered mine on Sunday, and I picking it up tomorrow. The PSP is going to be released in a value pack.
You can get memory sticks for up to a 1 gig, but they are all quite expensive. The PSP comes with the 32mb stick, which is perfect for game saves. Unfortunately, Sony didn't choose the cheaper and more common SD Flash. Instead they choose their own proprietary product, the Memory Stick Duo Pro. (http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/categories/products/deptpage.asp?web_dept=psp&web_sub_dept=Accessories&sub_dept_group=Memory%20Card)
The only problem with watching movie files off of memory sticks is that you can only watch files in a 320X240 resolution which means no widescreen and no taking advantage of the higher resolution of the screen. UMD movies come in widescreen and take advantage of the full resolution of the screen. As you can guess, this was done intentionally.
But, since you can hook up your PSP directly to your computer via USB, it may eventually be possible to watch movies off of memory sticks at full resolution through some kind of BIOS flash or tricking the PSP into thinking your playing a UMD somehow.
You can get sticks for much cheaper than the link above at Newegg, but they do not have any at 1 gig. Just search for "Memory Stick Pro Duo" Make sure you get that right, because there are 3 other types of memory sticks.

The EB I reserved at were shorted by about 60 units, so I didn't get one. I hit the Sony store and an FYE during lunch. Both completely sold out, so I currently am sans PSP.

I was in Target in Howell, NJ around noon today. They had 10 in stock, and it didn't look like there was any kind of rush at all. No one was around,

I can't imagine this being a viable alternative to watching movies. I understand that it's got the "All in one" features. But it's needlessly expensive to purchase memory cards large enough to watch movies on it, and for what else are you going to use the UMDs? You can get a portable DVD player with better battery life cheaper than this thing. Better to focus on it as being a video game machine.
As of right now, though, there are no games on it that I want. I thought Metal Gear Acid until I found out that it was a card game last year.

CH, I reserved late and knew that would be a possibility. I'm friends with the guys in the store and spoke to the guy I know on the phone and he gave me all the info. I don't fault them.
I couldn't believe that the Sony store was sold out and didn't know when they'd get more.

Well.. I picked up my PSP yesterday. The EB I went to had a lot of PSP to sell. I was surprised that they still had alot. I picked it up and bought Twisted Metal: Head On.
I got the PSP in a Limited Edition value pack.. it had a sampler disc and Spider-Man 2.
I am pretty happy with the PSP.. Great graphics, Wireless Multiplayer, Online Enabled, and a rechargeable battery.
I just really need more games to play with though...
And oh, I don't plan to get any movies or pay for movies on this.

How's the battery life? And does it fit in your pocket without being bulky?

The battery life varies from games and settings. I think it ranges from 3 hours to 4 hours.
It does fit in your pocket. The protective case makes it un-bulky. But it doesn't really bother me.

I ordered one from kbtoys.com last night. It was the only site with them in stock that didn't make you buy a huge bundle with bad games and useless crap.

I got bored with my GBA. I don't need another high priced toy right now. I'll probably get one if they start getting refurbished on some site for about half the price or less and they already have a million good games I can pick up for 5 bucks.

I've had it for almost 2 months now. It's great for my
commute. I download and encode tv shows I miss and play
games.

I have:

Lumines: Great puzzle game in the block/Tetris vein

Wipeout Pure: Fucking great racing game, plus it's the game everyone uses for the web hacks and shit.

Dark Stalkers: Really nice translation of the arcade game, but it sucks trying to do the special moves on the pad.

Untold Legends:
Repetative shite. It's good for the first hour or two, but then
it's just the same thing over and over. Gets real boring.
