Did anyone read this latest Tom Wolfe book? What is your take on it?
I thoroughly enjoyed it, but have found that a lot of younger readers have an offensive take on it. I think they're taking the subject a little too seriously and aren't enjoying the fun, detailed writing style of Tom Wolfe as it should be taken. What do you think?

Sorry, not familiar with the book or author.
Any background into? Summay of events maybe? I'm just curious why you liked the book so much and what it's about. Also, what the controversy was even over.

Tom Wolfe's been around forever, I think he's in his 70s. He's written a ton of books, with Bonfire of the Vanities maybe being his top seller.
I haven't read this one yet but from what I remember it's about a college girl who decides to "experience college life to the fullest" so to speak. I hadn't heard of any complaints other then some of the lingo he used in conversations between kids was very outdated since the story was supposed to take place right now.
Funny thing about his research for the book. He went around to a bunch of frat and sorority parties (including some of his daughter's). He said most of them didn't know who he was, they just thought he was some old, weird dude in the corner wearing a white suit.

My english teacher reccommeneded(sp?) this book for me. I went to the book store and it's about 750 pages. Only available in hardcover now. It would have cost me 30 bucks, so I decided to go with "A heartbreaking work of staggering genious" by Dave Eggers. Really good.

He's a very famous author, Moe. Some of the titles he wrote are...
The Bonfire of The Vanities.
The Right Stuff.
The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.
He and Hunter Thompson hit the scene at about the same time, and both men's writing styles were somewhat grouped together.
That said, I thought his last book was a waste of everyone's time. It seemed hopelessly out of touch on about a thousand levels.

Do you mean the dialogue?
If so, yes.
It's embarassing.

Any quotes? I remember one person saying he screwed up something with XBox or Playstation or something.

Ironically, none of the people at any of the parties he observed will be reading his book, either.
