Toys R Us gets bought out (http://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory?id=589581)

The Walmart/Target hammer swings again. Seriously, if TRU, which, by and large has been a HUGE company for 30 years, cannot compete, what hope does small busniess have?

Personally, I never liked Toys R Us after they went though with that marketing campaign when they changed the stores to be more of a FAO Schwartz / Hands on establishment. I always dug the floor to ceiling grid aisles with the cast iron shelving. It just had this feel of a Toy Depot. It was such a contradiction.

Man it was a great feeling walking into Toys R Us knowing you were walking out with something.

Did anyone else ever used to go to the Toys R Us on Rt 440 in Jersey City, with the faded color bars on the front?

This really has nothing to do with Target or Walmart. Toys R Us ran these monstrous stores, which in this day and age, people don't need or want. The overhead, especially on a specialty store like TRU, was insane. The market has become fragmented, and you have large inventories online. Not in stores like TRU.

And besides... TRU was spun off of Babies R Us, which was a lot more profitable.

At my Toys R Us when I was a kid there used o be board games lining one of the walls of the store. They almost took up the whole wall, from front to back. That was always the first place I went. Ah, how I used to love that. Too bad kids these days will likely have those kinds of memories, except of Wal-Mart. And all I am commenting on is how generic and awful looking Wal-Marts are.

From the article:

The toy business has been losing market share for years to Wal-Mart and other discounters such as Target.

truthfully I have no frame of reference here, i'm like a child who wanders into the middle of a movie and....eh, nevermind. Anyway, I'd find it surprising if somebody could prove that WalMart and Target do NOT play some sort of role in this.

My point is, TRU's operation was bloated. That's why they couldn't compete. It's not an issue with Target or Walmart. Department stores have had toy departments since the dawn of time.

I used to work for Toys R Us, indirectly...they were a joke really...the entire organization...website was written in Cold Fusion...now I love Cold Fusion, but you don't run fucking Toys R Us.Com on the same platform as RonFez.Net.

Dumb question time...

Why do people point the finger to Wal-Mart and Target for being so evil, but Amazon gets a free pass?

if anything, Amazon has done more to affect your local record store than anything else. Same with book stores.

I'm so sick of people saying that Home Depot is killing off customer service and mom and pop stores. Mom and Pop stores STINK. The prices suck, the selection sucks, the hours suck.

Umm...the prices are higher, the selection is usually better in terms of better quality product hand chosen by the owner based on what he believes are his customer's tastes...you lose that custom, personal touch with larger dept stores...

but then again, the mom and pop stores have websites now so who cares really...i hope all stores close in 5-10 yrs...who the fuck needs to go shopping anymore in this day and age....buy online, deliver to my door...

wonderful...

I always hated Toys R Us, even though conceptually it would have been every kid's dream to have a huge tpy store. I felt it was like you had to go through a maze of walls to get you into the store, and then when you found what you wanted, you had to wait in Russian toilet paper like lines to make your purchase. Then you had to go through the maze again to get out. I just found it very frustrating and expensive and no one in the store knew where anything was really. Im really not suprised they failed.

I used to go there all the time when I was younger. And to the arcade in Hudson Mall too.

It's all Geoffrey's fault Toys-R-Us is running into the ground. Ever since he got rid of his parents (why are the authorities looking into that?) the store has been running into the ground. A kid with money, be it even a Giraffe, doesn't know what to do with it.

Toys R Us sucks. They have the worst staff working for them. Everytime I go I'm in line for 15 minutes with one person ahead of me.

I remember when Toys R Us took over the Child World store near the Preakness Shopping Center in Wayne, NJ. I had always hated Toys R Us because they were more expensive for no real reason.

Now some other stores that can offer lower prices are killing them. It happens.
