To those who own an ipod, do you know if using a USB 1.1 is "too slow" to use reasonably?

I have a usb 1.1 and want to buy an IPOD ( or zen mico or rio) and i want to know if im wasting my time.

I wont upgrade to a usb 2.0 because i cant open my puter to install things. im just that incompitant and techtarded.

use your firewire connection.

Another ipod Q - Any way to easily transfer my songs from one computer to another? I will be moving in 1-2 months and can't take the computer with me.
I have put about 1/2 of my cd's on the ipod so far, but I will stop if there is no way to transfer the files.

Not sure if it matters - but all my songs are off my cds, have not downloaded any.

I think the firewire thingy in the back of my computer is being used by the DSL connection.
I do know that the IPODS arent being shipped with firewire anymore, they are going with USB 2.0.

I think i may just get it and ill live with 12mbps

use your firewire connection.

If he has a PC with USB 1.1, I doubt he has a firewire connection.

I have USB 1.1 connections on my comp and I only have about 2-3 Gigs of space left on my 20 Gig U2 iPod.

Of course it's possible. And I honestly don't think it's THAT slow, just not as fast as USB 2.0 or Firewire. The real time consuming part for me was importing actual CDs into my library. The loading on the iPod was the easy part.

Just do it.

1.1 is too slow if you have a large iPod. if it's a shuffle or mini it may be okay. but 60 GB would take forever (if it's full)

And I disagree. You just have to bite the speed bullet my friend and deal with it.

You can certainly live with USB 1.0 with an Ipod. Every morning I transfer about 30 MB (thanks, kevmath ;)) to my Ipod from an older computer with only a USB 1.0 connector and it works fine.

When you first load up your Ipod it may take a long long time, 20 GB should take around 4 hours but I think it will be much longer from experience. perhaps as long as 8 hours.

But small updates, like a single album will be fine. So it takes 30 sec to transfer the cd instead of 15. Big deal. =)

If you have a tech savy friend I would recommend getting a firewire port becuase it is nice. They are very cheap maybe $15? and very easy to install. A friend with minimal computer knowledfe could do it.

I love how everyone says "It's only like 10 bucks" for this and that.

I DEFY you to find an up to date computer part for 10 fucking dollars. You know what's 10 dollars? Boxes of 100 floppys, old black and white monitors at garage sales and Apple IIe parts.

If you don't think you'd use the Firewire card for anything else, perhaps you'd want to put in a USB 2.0 card. They even make cards that have both USB2 and Firewire. If you ever get another device (Video Camera, external DVD burner) that uses one of them you'll be set.

I decided to get the Zen Micro so i can listen to Stern on my bus ride to work, and for the removable battery. I will see how long downloads will take. I ordered it on line from buy.com and its being shipped.

My new question is this:
I use Kazaa Lite which i got when it was a free download. I see that new users have to pay to get it, but since its on my computer already, its free for me. When i go to search for a song, it says 3 million users on line sharing 750 million files. So youd think youd never have a problem finding songs.
But i put in basic stuff and i dont get back alot. And if i get a list of 20 users to get the song, it often says " more resources needed" or " remotely queued".

that sucks. What is the best free sharing program that doesnt have ANY spyware (Kazaa Lite has none).

I could give a rat's ass whether you can get a firewire card for $10 (how much is shipping anyway?) -- I just wanted to note that I prefer this picture:

I have another question about my IPOD, recently it starting skipping
songs, so I let the battery run out, tried restarting it. The
apple logo appeared, then a folder image with a warning sign. I
tried reformatting it with the cd, restoring it with the ipod updater,
and tried ephpod. I am considering sending it to apple for servicing
but don't know if its worth it to just buy a new one and start
over. Has anyone ever had their IPOD serviced? was it
expensive? What do you advise I should do?
New question -- If you're running Windows XP on a PC with multiple users who each log in separately, is there an issue if multiple users sync up their ipods with itunes running under their user account? Does that make any sense?

I would think that the iTunes libraries are linked to the individual user accounts. I'm not on a machine with iTunes at the moment, but I think it stores that information in the My Documents folder.
