Abortion collides with bankruptcy in Senate (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7122625/)

That article is about a last ditch effort to stop a bill that will make it much harder to get a bankruptcy in the future. What this article doesn't tell you is the disgusting crap the preceded it.

There were a bunch of amendments to this bill that were rejected. Among them:

A provision protecting military families from the new restrictions. (http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=1&vote=00013)

To exempt families whose serious health problems caused their bankruptcy. (http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=1&vote=00013)

Click on the links and look upon the fine human beings who felt that people whose financial hardships happened because of serious illness and military service shouldn't be entitled to a bankruptcy, and should essentially be treated exactly the same as the dumbass down the street who racked up his debt on fancy vacations, electronics and tons of other shit he couldn't afford.

I'd gladly spit in the face of any of those 58 people who shot down those amendments. I know most people really don't care about this, but you should. It's just another example of an industry coming in to Washington and buying itself a law to help itself at the expense of vulnerable Americans.

So now, in the future, because of this bill, for people who rack up huge medical bills, bankruptcy will be a much, much more, difficult, if not impossible option. Instead, creditors will be free to level lawsuits against these people, take their homes and so on. How wonderful.

Here's an article that goes a bit in depth about the bill. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6988633/)

A Harvard University study published recently found that costly illnesses led to about one-half of all personal bankruptcies and that most people who file for bankruptcy protection because of medical problems actually have health insurance.

Frequently, supporters of the bill argued, bankruptcy is the last refuge of gamblers, impulsive shoppers, divorced or separated fathers avoiding child support, and multimillionaires, often celebrities, who buy mansions in states with liberal homestead exemptions to shelter assets from creditors.

And it would be nice if this bill closed that loophole. Here's the vote on an amendment that would have closed that loophole. Guess what happened? (http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=1&vote=00023)

I guess no one cares. You should, this certainly isn't a partisan issue. There are plenty of Democrats supporting this, including Joe Biden who I used to respect. And there are plenty of conservatives (outside of Congress) seeing this for what it is. As long as we remain apathetic to these kinds of things, there will be no end in sight the industries walking into Washington, handing out donations and getting whatever the hell they please out of Congress.

You just hit it on the head. nobody wants to respond because it can't be turned into a "my party's cock is bigger than your party's cock" type of argument that all these threads seem to break down into.

Nobody also seems to want to admit anymore how badly our government continues to screw us.

This is important and has the potential to threaten just about everybody on the board should they have a misfortune or two (bad health, divorce)

but

after the last four years and especially with the way the election turned out, I've diagnosed myself with "outrage fatigue." My poor, li'l outrage gland is just about squeezed dry and needs to recoup.

I'm just glad they didn't reintroduce debtor's prison.

Yet.

Well, if you don't care about this, do at least one thing, it'll be for your benefit. And don't listen to me, listen to one of the guys responsible for the bill: (http://news.ft.com/cms/s/a6cb84b6-9032-11d9-9a51-00000e2511c8.html)

The legislation also carried an implicit responsibility for the industry, according to Mr Sensenbrenner, who will manage it in the House.

"The responsible thing for credit-card issuers to do would be to reduce interest rates because there is less risk," he said. "If they don't, they will play into the hands of the opponents of the bill it would reduce their credibility."

"my party's cock is bigger than your party's cock" type of argument

I'll give the edge to the Democrats here because I never heard anyone use the phrase "hung like an elephant".

I know no one cares about the bankruptcy bill, but just take a few hours to let this quote sink in. (http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-scheer15mar15,0,1004106.column?coll=la-news-comment-opinions)

So why gut the bankruptcy law now? Greed, pure and simple. And, pathetically, this bankers' dream is becoming a reality through the support of Republicans who have decided, as they often do with social issues, to selectively pick and choose when to follow the teachings of the Bible.

A key sponsor of the bill, Sen. Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa), actively opposes abortion and same-sex marriage on biblical grounds yet believes the Good Book's clear definition and condemnation of usury is irrelevant. The Old Testament, revered by Jews, Muslims and Christians alike, mandates debt forgiveness after seven years, as was pointed out earlier this month by an organization of Christian lawyers in a letter to Grassley.

"I can't listen to Christian lawyers," said the senator, "because I would be imposing the Bible on a diverse population."

The World's Richest People

The World's Richest People

By Luisa Kroll and Lea Goldman

The rich had a very good year.

The collective net worth of the 691 billionaires we could find is $2.2 trillion, up $300 billion from the combined worth of the 587 people listed last year. Every region saw gains. The world's richest moguls now hail from 47 countries, including, for the first time, Kazakhstan, Poland, Ukraine and even Iceland. The newcomers include 69 Americans and 38 Europeans. More than half of them are entirely self-made.

American gas pipeline tycoon Daniel Duncan, who was raised by his grandmother after his mother died when he was 7, debuts on the list as the wealthiest new billionaire, with a net worth of $5.1 billion. Wong Kwong Yu, 35, the youngest new self-made billionaire, runs a chain of 100-plus appliance stores catering to China's burgeoning middle class.

The most conspicuous new entrant: Martha Stewart, who was freed from jail earlier this month.

Rich Getting Richer (http://biz.yahoo.com/special/bill05_article1.html)

Trade Deficit at All-Time High of $665.9B

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The United States deficit in the broadest measure of international trade soared to an all-time high of $665.9 billion in 2004, showing in stark terms the speed with which the country is becoming indebted to the rest of the world.

Debt (http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/050316/economy_15.html)

this thing they're trying with the bankruptcy is just a 'blatant' in your face " example to the middle class and poor" that you will continue to struggle and you are basically powerless to do anything about it

they admit there are loopholes in almost every facet of the economic system that serve the wealthy and have no benefit if you are middle-class or poor

this is not to say people who have great ideas and create companies and jobs, and educate themselves with extended years of college do not deserve to earn higher salaries. But they should not take the lion's share. Their ideas would never come into fruition if they didn't have help from many other people

there is no reason to be paying high prices for gas while a company like Mobil PROFITS 20billion a year and the owners of Oil Reserves are MULTI Billionaires

It's just not FAIR. That may sound weak but I don't think asking for something to be fair is too much to ask...
