I was at my nieces yesterday and she has AOL on a dial up connection and I was surfing around with it and Jesus, is it slow compared to my cable modem! I cant imagine using anything other than high speed. I saw that she had a TON of spyware and cookies and cleaned her out to try and get her some faster access.

I saw that she hasnt bothered to do any updates for Spybot, Adaware or Norton since I installed them on her system 8 months ago when she get her new Dell laptop. I literally sat there for an hour waiting for each update to finally trickle in through AOL. Unbelievable! Why does anyone use AOL or a dial up when they have access to cable? Are they just too lazy to learn anything else? To me, AOL is like a browser within a browser within a browser and between the constant popping up of her friends on her messenger, it is such a distraction that it isnt any wonder why she hasnt done any update.
Needless to say she had about 1000 different spyware and crap on there.

I use AOL because I can't afford that 40 a month charge for cable. Period. If they ever fucking drop it, I'll see what I can do.

And I only use AOL to dial in. I hate their browser, so I just IE after I'm on. I wait for everything, but I still have designed and loaded Unhallowed's whole website with it, uploaded files and maintain it with this connection. It's gay, but you learn to accept it.

As far as downloading, if I really need something, I just set it up and go to sleep. Then in the morning, I check if it's done and set it up if I have time before work.

Moe, do you have a house phone (landline?) If so, and you have verizon, they have a DSL plan for 29.95 a month which is only slightly more than AOL. If not, check around for DSL prices and see what you can get. I know you may miss you AOL email addresses like DMMcuddleBum, but you can try hotmail to see if you can get a similiar name!

Unfortunately, I have my Mother to contend with. She uses her own account on AOL off my comp, on her own account on the computer of course so she can't see all the midget porn in My Documents.

But anyway, she is comfortable with AOL, seems happy with the fee and is completely uninterested in the speed that even a DSL line would bring. I've tried to talk to her about it. Internet speed means nothing to a person who only checks E-mails.

So in other words, I'm fucked. I can't afford a cable moden bill on my own. I offered to pay half the DSL line and she's not interested in changing the way she checks her E-mail, even if it means more speed.

My mother is the same way.

Since my dad finally retired, he was all about getting a cable hook-up to his office at their home, but my mom's computer is in the basement, and she continues to naysay the idea of running the cable through the walls down there. In the meantime, she continues to use a local dial-up ISP, and it takes her a good hour+ each night just to read and send e-mails. Anytime I try to explain to her how much faster DSL or cable would be, it's like I'm speaking an alien language.

EXACTLY. Well, for me it's only my mother since my father doesn't even want to know how to use a computer, but she could care less about speed. I even tried to explain to her that she wouldn't have to wait for the stupid pictures her friends send her of their ugly kids with a DSL line. No dices. She doesn't see the downside in opening an E-mail, walking away from the comp for 10 minutes as 15 HUGE pictures download (because these fucking idiots don't know how to change the size of the pictures their digital camera spits on their hard drive) and coming back to view them.

if you are older / retired, 10 minutes or an hour to check emails does not matter because truthfully they have nothing else important to do.

Mojo, how about setting up wireless with the cable modem, that way there are no wires and the faster speed.

Oddly enough, I just talked to my dad and today and he said he had just hooked up a wireless network for all the computers in their house. SO THE DAY IS WON!

My mother is the same way.

so is my Aunt Helen... she bought a compaq presario around 4 years ago for 500 which included 2 years aol. It still has 64meg of ram, has windows 98, and she dials into Aol just to check e-mails, oh yeah! and to play Solitaire

and she complains about it being 'so slow'

i worked on her pc before and had to replace the modem. recently she had trouble and it looks to be the motherboard. i hear the drive spinning but get nothing on the monitor, and it doesn't recognize the floppy at all (i tried a boot disk) so i swapped memory, the hard drive, and no change.

it may be the monitor port? and it may not be going to the floppy due to Bios settings but i already spent enough time on the piece of junk.

my wife picked up a Compaq at work for 50 bucks about a year back. so i took the 64meg and modem from my aunts pc and put it in the one my wife bought and my aunt can have it for 50 bucks... plus i put XP Pro on it (it had 98) and she'll have 192meg of ram

i like helping out but you find yourself spending hours and hours on this stuff

You know, its people like the ones from the original post that are causing Microsoft to force feed everyone anti virus and anti spyware software. Some people are bitching and moaning that they are going to put the little people out of buisness but the fact is that even though the little people (Spybot, AdAware, etc) do a good job people are too stupid or clueless to actually seek out those programs and run them.

Now all this wont help the people who are content with using Windows ME on dialup and never want to upgrade but at least with it being installed by default on newer systems it will at least make things better in the future because everyone will have it already installed and running nightly with out them having to configure anything.

went to my Aunt Helen's house today and setup the new pc. she's not really my aunt but my uncle has been dating her for close to 40 years now.

installed AOL and it actually ran pretty quick on the dialup and the extra 128 meg of memory. plus she couldn't believe you could listen to a cd and surf the net at the same time. overall she was really happy and felt it was now running much faster than her other machine

even though i get a little stressed and at times wish i would never get involved(mainly cause i have little free time) It was rewarding when it was over and she seemed to really appreciate it. Plus my Uncle appreciated me helping her out

she stuck a 20 in my hand and i tried to refuse it but she insisted.

i always thought it could be a good business setting up and supporting pc's within these Senior Communities. maybe even start training classes and hold them at the Clubhouses they have at these secured senior villages

with my Aunt it's a funny situation... she is pretty wealthy and drops about a thousand a month in AC but shakes her head when she hears 45 a month for a cable modem

but you just can't tell people what to do with their money

Last night was the last straw. My mother wanted to check some online travel agencies for tours she could take my grandma on this summer, and it took no less than 2 minutes to load EVERY PAGE we click on.

I told my mother to get ready, because I get a raise for my new position, we're getting DSL and that's that. Period.
