I can usually make it through the end, because you never know what's going to happen, but last night's really was the worst I can ever remember. The "Michael Jackson" skit should have been funny and wasn't - the "Hot Plates" was so bad the only laugh that came from the audience when Horatio made a funny voice - the fake commercials were horrificly bad - the botox bit had maybe one slight chuckle, but it might have just been gas from those low carb candy bars I ate. Even the news was off - I turned it off right then.
Looking forward to tonight with the special on SNL's first five years.

SNL literally put me to sleep last night. I started dozing off during the hot plate sketch, could barely hear 'Candy Shop' in the background and then I was out cold. I couldn't even make it to Weekend Update. The show is awful. But I will say this, I wouldn't mind a threesome with Mya Roudolph and Amy Poehler those two ladies are so fucking hot.

SNL hasnt been good for years.
This happens every single year. It's a predictable pattern.
People/critics ALWAYS start out saying they hate a certain era..then..after a few years, that SAME era is considered the "hey day".
People HATED the Shearer, Guest, Crystal, years. Now those are the "good ol' days".
People even hated when Sandler, Farley, and Spade were on. At that time...the show was getting all the same negative press that it always gets ("Saturday Night Dead") and NOW that cast is considered "Brilliant".
Now people are longing for the good ol' days of Will Ferrel, Cheri Oteri, and Jimmy Fallon. ("Now THAT was when the show was funny")
For some reason...it takes a little while for people to digest the show. It's very unique that way.
One more thing:
Was the first 5 years REALLY all THAT fuckin' funny??! Does "Cheeburga Cheeburga" and "Bass o Matic" make anyone actually LAUGH?

Bullshit.
There specific sketches from that period people love, but overall most still consider it a debacle, and easily the worst period in the show's history.

Whenever they show some SNL retrospective and the old 60 MINUTES or Nathan Therm ("I must say...") skits come on,
somebody will always say "man...why can't the show be THIS funny anymore ?!" So, I've definitely heard that Shearer cast get some love from people 30 and over.
They always romanticize the memory of the show and it's past casts.

No way -- the worst periods in the show's history can be boiled down to single seasons:
1. the Charles Rocket, Denny Dillon Gilbert Gottfried season
2. the Anyhony Michael Hall, Robert Downey, Randy Quaid season

yes more specfically when lorne michaels left as producer...and they had a woman for about a sesaon and then dick ebersol took over for a few seasons...but you also have to look at it from this angle, the reason people think the repeats are better is becuz they those casts are pretty much stars now...for some reason alot of people don't like to give nobodys any attention so they automatically think they are bad which is what everyone on snl starts out to be, pretty much a nobody. until they strike a deal and hit it big in hollywood.which is why we like the repeats better becuz we look at them now as stars instead of then when they were nobodys like with this cast, if they move on get some hits in movies we are gonna think the next cast sucks and be begging for this cast...annnd also an actor sometimes is only as good as the material that is written for them. so you also have to blame the writers, alot of the good ole days were becuz they had abstract thinking writers franken and davis conan o brien, and the show wasn't concerned with getting the flavor of the week as host at those times either they got a host that they thought would be good for the show or very obsurd becuz most of the hosts in the early days were comedians so they had the timing...but maybe i'm just on a rant becuz i have an audition for SNL today who knows.

I love that site there. Very concise.

I hear that. I loved the First 5 Years and really loved the Carvey, Lovitz, Hartman Years as well. Even a few years after that with Farley, Sandler and Spade were pretty good but for some reason id idn't watch as much cause I was so used to the other aformentioned casts.
I wonder too if the show needs to be digested later and over time as if ZLorne Michaels is some fucking genius and his comedy is from the future. I doubt it but I kind of get that drift sometimes. I didn't even really start to get into Will Ferrell until I saw him in Old School. I knew of him but never really got to appreciate how damnf unny he was until then. It's like AFTER they have worked their ass off in the "Not Ready for Prime Time" spot and then they hit somewhat and then I follow them. I always seem to do that with SNL. Much unlike music where it is the complete opposite.

The show needs to be more brutal in its hiring and firing, especially with the writers. Tina Fey was hilarious as head writer for a couple seasons, but then clearly lost it. Toss her ass and bring in some new blood.

The only skit that is remotly funny is Debbie Downer... it hardly makes sense but I usually cant keep a straight face (neither can the cast)

Lately, they've been putting some really good skits at the end of the show and, some really crap-ass skits at the beginning.
I wonder why they're doing that. It must be a "go out on a high note" strategy. (as opposed to a "come out swingin'" stategy)

I may be alone here, but I'm watching this tonight, and I pretty sure this is a new one. In case anyone saw, that Superbowl shuffle skit was totally done before. I can't think of what show it was but there was definately a skit show that did one of those the "Chicago bears going back to the studio" jokes. If anyone remembers what show it was I'd appreciate it. If I'm right about this, SNL is hack tonight.

I haven't seen last nights episode yet but, even without seeing it...I know that it will be lame. WHY? Because they have some fuggin' athlete hosting the show. I don't care how big or successful the team/sport is; nobody gives a shiz about watching a pro athlete on a comedy show. One thing has NOTHING to do with the other.

I know that when I think "Comedy" ....I think "NFL Quarterback". When I think "Variety show host"... I think "Pro Sports".

I honestly don't understand the thought process behind SNL when they get Jeff Gordon and Andy Roddick or, for that matter, John McCain. It's a COMEDY show and these people have ZERO comedic ability.

I've seen EVERY SINGLE episode of SNL since around 1983 and without fail, the worst episodes are the ones with ultra lame hosts like Al Gore.

And that's the end of my post. Donk.

One of the things that bothers me most about SNL anymore is the constant ass kissing of Lorne Micheals in the past 2 months or so he was on the NPR show Fresh Air getting told how much of a genius he was, and later recieved a Mark Twain award for greatness in american humor which was shown on PBS. The man is not a genius, The case could be made that he can recognize talant but even that is debatable He wasnt responsible for the biggest star to come from SNL so for, Eddie Murphy and was responsible for Anthony Micheal Hall Robert Downey Jr. and Joan Cusak. He also has been part of the most horrible movies ever to be made some examples: The Ladies Man, Superstar, A night at the Roxbury, conclusion Lorne Micheals is not a Genius and should retire. One last thing Lorne once talked of retiring and the person he wanted to take over for him was Al Franken who might be the most unfunny person alive.
If Heavens full of Christians I want to go to Hell

I thought system of a down did pretty good. Of course I'm a fan so I'm biased.

The
vast majority of musical performers on SNL are horrible because they
change around the act for some stupid reason. I hate it when they have
some douchebag on stage to just say "put your hands up" or something
like that when the person we want to see is doing their thing.

Also,

SNL needs more Seth/Amy and less of whoever that chick is that plays Donatella Versace.

In recent years, SNL has not known what to do with women. They
give them the most annoying characters and make them reoccurring for
some unknown reason. I find Amy Poehler really funny, thought she
was great in UCB, but I can't recall any funny skit she was in when I
last watched. Otherwise, Cherie Oteri, Molly Shannon, et al. were
just annoying as fuck and completely unfunny.

The episode wasn't really all that funny but, it wasn't really all that bad either. If this were a mid-season episode (instead of the season finale) it probably wouldn't seem THAT terrible. It just sucks the the season kinda went out with a wimper.

Lohan just isn't a "star" to me. Sure, she's extremely famous but, at the end of the day, all she's really done is about 4 kids movies...only two of which have really made any money. You could always count on SNL to close the season with some heavyweights (Jim Carrey, Seinfeld, David Bowie). I guess those days are long gone.

Sandler has a new movie coming out. It would've been nice to see him host the finale. Ahh...to dream.

I watched strictly for Dane last night, I was so happy to see him get a huge break like that.

It's funny, I tried to go with the joke at 1st. I typed "Anthony Michael Hall SNL" into the old Google Search and came up with that.

Lovitz is so fucking awesome, I had to post him out of respect for his amazing comedy on that show. And I have to admit that I kinda liked Ed Grimley, even the ill-fated Saturday morning cartoon.

I loved Martin Short on SNL, but something about Ed Grimley really just drove me nuts.

And that year Martin Short, Harry Shearer, Christopher Guest and Billy Crystal were on? Bomm, right there...there's a season in and of itself that's funnier than all of the first five combined.

And good call on trying to find Anthony Michael Hall...the year he was on was one of the worst. One of the two seasons where they tried to load up on established names and it toally backfired...I think Hall was on with guys like Randy Quaid and Robert Downey Jr. and Damon Waynes. Then there was that other year in the mid 90's when they still had Farley, Spade and Sandler after they got huge, but added Jeneane Garofalo, Christ Elliot and Michael McKean. No good.

I caught the odd episode here and there when Comedy Central was running SNL and they were fucking terrible. Just no laughs on my end. It wasn't until the Lovitz years started and they moved lame asses like Julia Louis Dryfus OUT that it got so fucking good.

And I totally agree on the seasons where in the 90's they jammed Elliot, Garofalo and McKean in to do pretty much nothing special. McKean is a very funny guy, but I never saw him in that season very much. They just had a fucking assload of big names but they weren't really doing anything. Proves yet again, Lorn can shove big names down our throat but he's much better farm teaming it like the old days. He's just gotta role with the bad years until he assembles more up and comers that are great.

I do feel bad for him because his is a recepie that kinda works against himself. He wants people to do really well so the show gets heat, but when they're REALLY funny, the cast members only have a limited amount of time before they move on to bigger things.

It was incredibly upsetting to me when Comedy Central lost the
rights to broadcast the classic SNL episodes, well, maybe not that
classic, but even Will Ferrel's acting ability is miles higher than
Horatio Sanz's and Jimmy Fallon's. Now it is on E!, you couldn't pay me
to watch 99.99% of the crap they throw at you besides SNL.
