Canadian professors have determined that North American college students have less ability to recognize complex (and frankly, simple) rhythmic structures than first and second generation immigrants from Bulgaria and Macedonia.

OK, three comments:


It is not clear from the article whether ethnic heritage was an uncontrolled variable amongst the North American sample population
Hey professors, get a real job!
We got less rhythm than a bunch of goat-herding, neighbor-feuding dirt farmers from the Balkans?!? Damn, we suck.

I think it has to do with the way we are raised. If you look at the spanish / latin culture, they are surrounded by music and dance from when they are little. at family parties everyone is up and dancing. I am sure this is true in other countires as well. Instead of sittign in front of the TV, they listen to more music and dance.

When you learn to clap to music, it helps you learn about the beats.
