Any Techies Out There?

I'm taking courses at NYU's School of Continuing Ed. in Internet Technologies and JAVA , and I'll be looking for a job next spring.

Can anyone tell me what the job market is like right now?

Well I'm a computer science major right now in High School(I go to a Vocational School) so I could help you a bit. The job market is real shitty right now so you should do a few things. Try taking courses in other places such as Databases and Networking. Being varied never hurts in this area. This will keep your options open. Also some Unix experience will definitely be a plus. Unix people are always in short supply so they are always more wanted. I hope I could help and good luck.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, I know that the job market sucks. I'm going to try to get as many skills as I can.

As for Unix, what do people want? Programming in Unix skills?

Programming in Unix is not really an issue since most programs on Unix are written in languages that are Platform independent(C++, Java, Perl, etc.). Unix isn't really a requirement but it doesn't hurt. Example: A MS sysadmin starts off at around 42k a year. A Unix sysadmin starts at around 62k. Or you could become a QNX guru since there are about 3 people using that lol.

I am a computer programmer who was unemployed for about 8 months (Feb to Oct) and finally found a job last week doing php for a dot com.

And AM's numbers are too high for someone just out of school. Especially in this market.
