Make a note of this: (http://nypost.com/news/regionalnews/38958.htm) if you are ever getting mugged on the streets of New York at 3:00 in the morning, do NOT antagonize your assailant with the words "what are you going to do, shoot us?" Not a good move. What happened to this girl is absolutely terrible, and I hope they catch the kids responsible, but DAMN, this could have been avoided.

First of all, the guy who tried to walk past these kids miscalculated, and he is lucky that he just got pistol whipped. Then, when they try to steal a purse from one girl, the loudmouth friend says "what are you going to do, shoot us?" Bad move. Too much drunken bravado. If staying out until all hours on a Wednesday night is your thing - if you have no qualms about walking the streets of the lower east side in the middle of the night - fine, that's your business. But decide ahead of time that if you get mugged, you will hand over the money and be glad if you don't get hurt. Your stupid pride & money is not worth risking your life.

Also, although it's not in the article posted above, guess what: when the girl said "what are you going to do, shoot us?" the gunman took aim at her friend, but the gun didn't go off. So he turned it on the loudmouth and shot her instead. OF COURSE SHE DIDN'T DESERVE THIS, but damn, what an IDIOT.

this was on the front page of the newspapers, they'll absolutely catch these assholes. why would you say the nypd wont try hard to catch them. there were 4 people, one of them will surely cooperate and rat out the shooter in order to save their own ass.

Because I personally know people who were killed in public places, it was front page news, and no one was ever caught. You've been watching too much NYPD Blue. Wake up. Cops wait for somone to say "It was me" or else they rarely catch ANYONE. It's bullshit, like most of society's institutions. You want to prevent crime? Protect yourself.

Wow, Wednesday night must've been a popular night for mugging, cuz I got pretty much all BUT mugged that night. A homeless guy followed me through a parking lot at 4 in the morning, and when he asked me what time it was, I knew my ass was getting mugged, cuz that is basically the opening line to every mugging. But I got really lucky and a group of like 3 or 4 college kids emerged from the other end of the parking lot and started walking toward us, so when the guy saw them coming he backed off.

I'm not sure if the answer is more guns or less guns but someone needs to get their fucking ass kicked on a daily for shit like this. How about cutting off the testicles of convicted thugs. Let me try to clarify this - if you're going to be a bad ass, don't put your friends at risk. It's not so much a matter of "blame," it's a matter of caution & common sense. What if her friend wound up dead, or (in my view) worse: in a wheelchair like Christopher Reeve?

Around 1971 or 72 we happened to get held up in our apartment by three men with a gun. at the time there was no peephole on our 4th floor apt door and my mom thought the word the guy mumbled was one of my older brother's friend's name and opened it up.

i was around 9 or ten at the time and two of my brothers were home, ages 5 and 12, and my dad.

my brothers and i were playing in the living room when we heard my mom yell my dad's name and we looked into the room and there was my mom and dad and 3 men holding the gun.

they gathered us all into the one room and were asking 'where's the money?' My dad told them his wallet was in his pants in the bedroom and one guy went and got a whole 8 bucks.

they then brought us to the kitchen and threatened to tie us up at which time my younger brother starts crying real loud.

all my Mom kept saying was that there was a cop who lived on the 3rd floor and they should get out because they were gonna get caught. i think my brothers crying got them nervous enough to just leave and down the stairs they went.

My dad had said he believed from their eyes that they were high and he wanted to obviously put up a fight but it most likely wouldn't have been a wise decision.

as the men fled my dad went up in the ceiling and grabbed a loaded 32 or 38 snubnose gun he had and i ran down the stairs with him. we ran outside and as soon as we did a police car pulled up at the corner. my dad gave him a description of the men and what happened and the policeman told him to get back in the house.

they called later asking a question about what one of the guys may have been wearing but my dad wasn't sure and just decided to let it go...

I couldn't be happier to be wrong. They'll ALL get serious time in NY. If you're involved in a mugging that turns deadly, they're all complicit in the murder. Unless, of course, you flip.

Late Sunday night, police picked up Fleming and four other suspects for questioning. Two of the four, 18-year-old David Simmon and a 15-year-old whose name was not released, were charged in the attempted robbery of the man but not in duFresne's slaying. The remaining two were considered witnesses, police said.

The attackers were 2 guys and 2 girls. The guys were named, the girls weren't. Apparently, the girls flipped. Good.
