View Full Version : Defending World Champs Boston Red Sox 2005 Season
So how do you top the magnificence of last season? By repeating as World Series Champions, of course!
But, unfortunately, I don't think we have the makings of a Yankee-type dynasty.
So far the big offseason moves are:
OUT:
(P) Terry Adams
(SS) Orlando Cabrera
(IF) Ricky Gutierrez
(P) Derek Lowe
(P) Pedro Martinez
(1B) Doug Mientkiewicz
(P) Mike Myers
(IF) Pokey Reese
(OF) Dave Roberts
(P) Scott Williamson
IN:
(P) Matt Clement
(P) John Halama
(P) Matt Mantei
(P) Josias Manzanillo
(SS) Edgar Renteria
(P) David Wells
TBD:
(P) Ramiro Mendoza
The pitching? Who knows. If Schilling's ankle healed properly, there's no reason he can't win 20 again. Hopefully, Boomer's back will be OK. He still has that nasty curve and I like having a lefty starter for Boston once again. Clement -- lets hope he lives up to the hype.
But I'm afraid about losing Mientkiewicz. That lack of defense was a problem at 1st until they picked him up. And we're going to miss the speed of Orlando Cabrera and Dave Roberts.
But, as the Sports Guy said: "Five year grace period for complaining after the championship"...

I want the Sox to go back, if only just out of the hope they play the Cubs.
Hell, even if the Cubbies lost, it would be damn cool to see in the first place, and would be great for baseball.

Hey, the Sox winning doesn't somehow make the Cubs any less sucky. We still have a streak to break.
Ours wasn't ever REALLY about a "curse"...we just were usually bad.

Why are they going after a 37-year old reliever? Just re-sign Ramiro Mendoza.
Denney Tomori: Close to Joining Red Sox
RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com
Friday, January 28, 2005
Update: Tomori's agent says that he's close to signing with the Red Sox, the Japan Times reports.
Recommendation: According to the report, Tomori, who left the Yokohama BayStars at the end of the 2004 season to take a shot at the majors, is set to join the Red Sox, his agent said Wednesday. "We are only dealing with Boston now and hopefully we will be sealing a contract by the start of next week," Joe Urbon told reporters. The 37-year-old righty reliever demonstrated his changeups and curveballs at an open practice session in front of scouts from 22 MLB teams in December, presumably at the Winter Meetings. It's unclear if the Sox are offering Tomori a major-league contract or a minor-league deal with a spring NRI. Tomori spent all of his 17 seasons in Japan in the bullpen, almost all in non-closing roles. In 360 games (416 innings), Tomori has an 18-28 record with just 30 saves. He's posted a career 3.96 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 404 strikeouts. Last year, he posted a 4.62 ERA in 25.1
innings, with a nice 24-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio. However, he also allowed seven homers in that brief
span, and did not save any games for the BayStars, even when they placed Kaz Sasaki on the DL for the last two months of the season.

Hey, don't go and write off the powerhouse Patriots team of 1985! They managed to score 10 points against the Bears in that Super Bowl...a feat that 10 of the Bears' 19 opponents that year failed to do.
To be serious, though, I love Curt Schilling. Even as a Yankees fan, because he's been one of my favorite players his whole career. But he just keeps making it harder & harder to like him every time he opens his mouth.
He's always been more than a little outspoken, but I don't know what's happened since he put on that "B" hat...he's become just a flat out asshole. You won, you slayed the giant (and for him it's not even the first time he's done it). Let go of that anger, let it go man, let it go.

And yet they still have an average of one Championship every 4 years...so let's ease up on the bashing. I could say my Celtics were a powerhouse since the 50s. Truth is they haven't been worth a damn since the early 1990s (that Eastern Conference series against the Nets and this years flirtation with first place notwithstanding).

Schilling is a phony who idolized the Yankees and even said he would veto the deal to the Redsox if the Yanks got into talks with the Dbacks. So he has no business saying jack. Trot and Tek and others are fine. They play hard and are and earned the right to talk about Redsox and Yankee stuff.

Well, from what my Yankee friends tell me, Boggs and Clemens weren't Yankees. Giambi wasn't either and the jury is still out on ARod. O'Neill and Tino became Yankees. I'll have to ask about Sparky Lyle, Catfish, Goose, Reggie, Winfield, and Rickey Henderson.
EDIT: I can't think of another team where this is even an issue ("he wasn't REALLY a Cub" or "he wasn't REALLY an Oriole"). If you wear the pinstripes, you are a Yankee. Some players are just longer-tenured (and are more apt to personify the organization), that's all.
Personally, my hatred of ARod started when he left Seattle to go to Texas...but NOT for the money. Right -- because Texas was such a contender compared to Seattle. If he left for the money, fine. Just ADMIT IT.

Agreed. I was just being a smart ass.
I can explain the "true" Yankee stuff.
It goes back to Lou Gehrig. He personified the class, professionalism, and quiet determination that became associated with the Yanks. He also became a national hero after his famous speech, and the Gary Cooper movie "Pride of the Yankees". DiMaggio picked up where he left off, and ran the clubhouse the same way. It then became the "Yankee way".
Its also a divide among Yankee fans. Some are drawn to this approach, the dedication to excellence. Others like the personalities and the fact they're winning at the time.
Take a wild guess which one I am.
One thing though. Schilling says "thats why they didn't win" the presence of the un-true Yanks like A-Rod. Completely wrong. The Yanks have won with hot dogs like Reggie Jackson, Mickey Rivers, etc. David Wells was anything but a true Yank, and was a big winner for them. The Greatest Yank of all time was the biggest hot dog on the planet, and the greatest player who ever lived, Babe Ruth.

Boston agrees to one-year contracts with 13 players.
March 3, 2005
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- The Boston Red Sox have agreed to one-year deals with 13 players, bringing all members of their 40-man roster either under contract or having agreed to one.
The 13 players are third baseman Kevin Youkilis, shortstop Hanley Ramirez, outfielders Adam Hyzdu and Adam Stern, catcher Kelly Shoppach and pitchers Abe Alvarez, Juan Cedeno, Manny Delcarmen, Mark Malaska, Anastacio Martinez, Luis Mendoza, Anibal Sanchez and Chris Smith.
The signings were announced Thursday by Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein.

In Arod's defense. He told had Hicks promise that they would spend money and build his team around him. Hicks told him he will. But lied and never did. Alex liked their minor leagues.... Which obviously with Texiera,Blaylock and Young and other emerging has been great. He was promised that they would spend money on pitching. And they have not with Arod and without Arod. So Arod thought the team had the potential of a great offense. And if they spent money like they promised on SP. They WOULD have a winning team. Arod gets such a bad rap from jealous haters its comical. Kevin Millar had the audacity to bash him. Last year when it looked like he was a Redsox. He threw his teammate Nomar under a train. By saying he would rather have Arod. Arod has been nothing but professional, and has busted his ass everyday since he has become a ballplayer.

I'm not trying to be a dick or anything but whether it's a quarter billion dollar deal or a five million dollar deal, I don't care how much loyalty these guys have nine times out of ten they are going to take the higher offer. Schilling preached about how he wanted to go back to Philadelphia or *gasp* the Yankees. Talking about how he loved monument park and it meant so much to him yada yada yada and then proceeding to call them greedy bastards when comparing them to the Pats. When the Yanks picked Vazquez instead and the Phillies offer was trumped by the Red Sox where did he go?
Derek Jeter insisted on getting a 19 million dollar a year deal from the Yankees. Anyone who thinks he is legitmately worth that is obsessed with this idea that without him the Yankees would be quivering in the shadows. All the talk of intangibles holds some weight but not nearly what people make it out to be. Where were the intangibles when he batted in the .200s last postseason. More recently look at Renteria. He took a slightly higher offer to leave a team he LOVED to be with.
You have to understand it isn't just the player, the Union plays perhaps the biggest role short of the agents in creating these contracts. When a guy wants to stay with his home team and is offered more elsewhere the Union immediatley steps in and pressures the player to take that offer because it sets the market higher for the rest of the league's players.

Great Points Davios. And why should the players show any loyalty these days? If the owners see that they aren't the best fit for their teams or see a better player at the same pos available. They will dump their asses faster then Moe can eat bacon.(love ya Moe ;)) Look at the NFL. What loyalty do the owners show there? Yea yea i know they have the cap blah blah. But even if they are not a cap prob they still dump players without any hesitation. Please do not preach loyalty to me in sports. The owners treated the players like Garbage when they had them locked down. Hell. The whole Blacksox scandal started when cheapass slave-owner Comisky dicked the players out of bonuses by not playing them when they were coming near their contract incentives. I love DJ But he can not shine Arods Shoes as a ball player.

Are you serious? Everybody knew he has a bad rotator cuff. Thats why the Astros, who could use a 5th starter, didn't even offer him a deal.
I was amazed how excited Sox fans were to get this guy, calling it "a steal". The guy had this injury all last year, and couldn't make it through the season. The only reason he wont get it operated on is he'll miss 1-2 seasons worth of pay. If they plan on using him after the all star break then maybe you'll get something out of him in Sept/Oct. Or maybe not. A huge question mark for you guys for as long as he pitches. Plus, how effective will he be? Especially against the good teams?
Schilling out. Miller out. Who the fucks your 4th and 5th starters for April?

I was at today's game (tuesday), and although the Yanks won (2nd game in a row), I gotta say I feel sorry for the fans. Those who even choose to remember last years ALCS are lost without "1918", and frankly, "Boston Sucks" is just a self-defeating chant. If they suck, why do you sweat em? Answer--youre scared. One fan was so at a loss for taunts, that as I removed my Boston cap for the National Anthem, he shouts, "YOU BETTER TAKE OFF THAT FUCKING BOSTON HAT IN THIS HOUSE!" During, "and the home of the brave" I waved my cap, ,turned around to the guy and affixed the cap back on my head, and dusted off my 2004 ALCS Championship sweatshirt. The season is too young to be scared. We're down 2, and we're not. Yanks are up 2...so why are their fans already worried? (go sox)

Take it easy. 1998 was
SEVEN years ago. I've always been a big fan of Olerud, going back to
his days with the Blue Jays. A total professional hitter, sweet swing
and good glove at first. Runs like he has his shoes tied together
(which makes him a typical Red Sox!). Anyway, a real pro's pro.

But
watching him last year on the Yanks, he's not the same
player. His bat has slowed considerably. Might come off the bench
as a defensive replacement, but thats
assuming his feet are OK. If they are, he's a nice back up. Just
remember this, the Yanks picked him up because the Mariners put him on
waivers last year. And that was way before he was hurt.
Oh, but we were just beating up on the shitty teams... Wait, you guys got PWN3D by the Blue Jays and Athletics in the last week.

They really haven't played many home games, great point, and something I didn't notice. They're actually 7 games over 500 at home and 3 under away from Fenway. Where both the Yanks and Boston have been bad is against the East teams. It seems nobody can beat the O's but the Jays have won 2 out of three from the Yanks, and the O's in their last series. And obviously they just thumped Arroyo and the Sox for a series sweep. If Baltimore doesn't start to lose a few more soon dealing with all these recent injuries, it's safe to say they are a really solid team. I'd love for the Jays to stun the east, my bolts did it in the AFC West this year (NFL) so I believe anything can happen after that. But this is different just bc it's MLB and the salaries are so drastically different.

having an off year in all but one very important category.

Varitek: .327 BA, 10 HR, 19 RBI
Ramirez: .224 BA, 11 HR, 38 RBI

How difficult is it to bat

Gibbons pinch hit Johnson. It was another good move by Gibby, who hours before the game predicted that Johnson would break out of his slump. This guy is easily the best manager the Jays have had in a long time. For more backround on my claim see the Spankee thread convo about him.

Oh yah, I couldn't believe Toronto knocked Clement around like that. It didn't seem like Lilly pitched great, but he did pitch out of jams. In fact, I thought Manny was going to add another slam of his own, before Johnson did it, when the Sox loaded them up in the 3rd I think.

Nice matchup on Sat with our rook Chaucin against the crafty fatty Wells.
From Peter Gammons ESPN

• The Red Sox keep hoping that Keith Foulke
will rediscover his mechanics; actually, 10 days ago he was back to
88-90 mph, which gave him separation for his changeup and allowed him
to throw his cutter, but then this week fell off to 84-85 again. Foulke
needs both separation and the cutter, because as of July 2,
right-handed batters had a 1.089 OPS against him with five homers and
six strikeouts in 59 at-bats. The continued warp of Matt Mantei (whose address now is the DL), Alan Embree and John Halama is a huge problem for Terry Francona; he can put Bronson Arroyo in the pen when (and if) Curt Schilling and David Wells
are healthy, but the Red Sox, like 20 other teams, are looking for
relievers. They have toyed with the notion of trying to get an exiled
starter and putting him in the middle, like a Brett Tomko.
What would happen to this staff if it had a run of extra-inning games
might be a disaster, but, fortunately for it, it hasn't gone into the
10th inning once.

This was all news to me. You'd think they were in LAST place by this article.
Milar also was whining and asking for them to fix his situation. he
says he is unhappy with things, especially the way he gets benched for
olerud. he needs to open his eyes and realize he sucks. but hopefully
someone will take him, maybe for a young guy who ends up being good

This is why I was pissed that they kept Millar over Mientkiewicz. They said it was because his bat was better. With that lineup it was expendable.

why payton, he did pretty well from what i saw of him.

He blew up at Francona a few days ago about playing time/spot in batting order.

He's
a retard, sure he's not starting now but with Damon beat up and Nixon
being the dirt dog he is theirs always a chance one of them could go
down and then Payton would be starting for a contender.

I read that Remy said Payton is already delt for some guy whos currently on the DL. Don't know who or what team.

THey're saying 6 weeks for Foulke, but its arthroscopic surgery on
his
cartilege (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2102714)
in his knee. I thought they were just cleaning it out. Knees are
tricky. You can be cleared to play, but still have weakness in
it.
