The Bush Administration, the Christian Coalition, and the record and movie industry filed briefs yesterday with the US Supreme Court advocating that peer-to-peer file sharing networks like Grokster, and Morpheus should be liable for copyright infringement happening on their networks. Defenders of the right to swap have until the end of February to respond. The court is considering whether to overturn the 20 year old precedent in Sony vs Universal Pictures that made the VCR possible despite its potential for use in copyright infringement. At stake, not only the future of file sharing networks, but many consumer electronics devices like CD and DVD recorders, Tivo, and more. This will be one of the most important decisions from the Supremes all year.

why is the the Christian Coalition involed in this?

Duh! (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00028HBKM/qid=1106674749/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-9694099-9817737?v=glance&s=dvd)

Seriously, though, if there aren't rigid explanations of what is being outlawed (assuming they were to win a case like this), the far reaching implications are quite scary.

they wont be able to stop things like DVD and CD burners because they can still be used under the veil of you making your own movie or cd and needed a way to save that.
there is too much grey area, this may very well affect the P2P file sharing, but i cant see if affecting CD-R or DVD -R or even tivo.

i dont think tivo falls under this...after all comcast as a similiar product and you really can't get the material OFF the recorder for your own personal use...

technology scares people. especially when it starts to impact profits.

The can take down todays P2P networks, but what they do not understand is that their are always ways to get illegal stuff.

if not the streets of NY, EBAY, from friends..... the list goes on.

plus once P2P as we know it is gone, generation 3 will be coming out. The 3rd generation will be ananomous, no centralized servers with information, encypted files. It will be near impossible to track.
